A: Poured from the bottle into a pilsner glass. Body is light-chestnut with a small whitish head. No lacing.

S: Not terribly strong - roasted grains and a touch of toffee. Roasted grains seem to give it a slightly "off" scent.

T: Not a lot going on here, either. Again I get roasted, toasted grains and sweetish malt. Overall taste impression, however, can be summed up with a word that describes both the taste and the mouthfeel: "watery." Finishes fairly clean with some lingering sweetness.

M: As noted above, thin and watery in feel. Carbonation is modest, but there.

O: I don't know how much I paid for this, but I know it was cheap. So it's got that going for it. Inoffensive, but nothing memorable.

Orange and clear, rising bubbles, very nice head and some decent lace.

Aroma is this brew's strongest point, fruity and malty, with a fresh spring day tossed in for good measure.

Flavor is somewhat octoberfest-ish, but more toasty, with bready and caramel malt flavors, enough bitterness to balance with just a touch of floral hoppiness.

Body is medium and kind of more chewy than expected, but that's not a bad thing in this case. Drinkability is high, I'm trying to savor it, but the beer could easily go down real quick.

Overall the beer is very tasty, and I can see myself picking up a sixer of this next time I'm at trader joe's. Very good job on this one.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium coppery amber with a one finger ivory head kept intact by constant carbonation. Aroma of sweet caramel malt with a touch of toasted malt, mildy spicy. Flavor is biscuit and lightly toasted malt, starts semi-sweet but turns somewhat dry, light grassy hops and hints of wheat and grain. Finishes with earthy malt and light vegetal notes. Medium bodied with nice carbonation. A satisfactory example of a traditionally laid back style. Nothing too exciting here, but it is what it sets out to be, a decent budget Vienna lager. Finish is slightly off, but otherwise a pleasant accompaniment for a meal or sessioning.

12oz bottle best by next April

Clear orange with little head. Smells like dust and old leaves till it warms, then its gingerbread, oak, English hops. Taste is a good mix of sweet grain and muted hops. There is some cheap beer flavor too, but not bad, mostly in the mouth feel.

Will grab this one again.

Bottle poured into a Samuel Adams glass

Copper red with a small stream of carbonation leads to an off white foam cap. Not much, but, there are thick lacings near the foam cap.

Aroma of grassy hops, grains , malt and a hint of spice.

First taste of sweet toasted malt, carbonation fizzes on the tongue, hint of hoppy bitterness on the finish. Almost too much fizz when I swish it around my mouth. I like the balance of malts and hops. Medium mouthfeel.

I like the balance of malt and hops. A beer that I would repeat at $6.99 a six pack. Might even keep in the beer fridge. A Nice little beer.

A standard pour of JosephBrau's Vienna Style Lager yields an orange-amber body and very little foam. What head does arise quickly falls and disappears without a trace ("without a lace?"). Carbonation is vigorous; large bubbles surge towards the top as clusters of small bubbles race up the sides and burst on the surface.

The somewhat muted nose is malt-forward, but notes of mild noble-type hops are palpable. Mild aromas of toffee and toasted sugar cookies, and faint notes of lilac.

There's something off balanced about the taste. It's too sweet at first. Then the bittering hops assert themselves and the beer becomes too bitter. I'm a fan of bitter beers in general, but in this case the bitterness overpowers the toffee-like malt and isn't complemented by citral or floral hoppy notes. Consequently, the kinds of illusionary flavors that well-balanced beers produce (e.g., lemon, grapefruit, herbs and spices such as coriander and pepper) are absent.

The mouthfeel is fuller than I expect from Vienna Lagers. A quick whip around the palate tosses up a bit of foam.

Vienna Style Lager's confused flavor profile is utterly disappointing. The ingredients are obviously fresh. The yeast strain doesn't leave any unwanted flavors. It's got a lot of potential, but fails to deliver. I won't revisit this one.
