Stopped in for dinner here on a Saturday evening. The place was packed with a 1.5 hour wait for a table of 3. Luckily we were able to snag a table in the bar area which is a really good idea to entice people to stick around. The beer selection was pretty decent with a lot of local stuff on the menu - Sixpoint, Brooklyn, and then some other good stuff like Troegs and Yuengling. The decor was pretty cool, but the atmosphere was good too. The place had nice lighting and nice upbeat atmosphere and the music wasn't too loud that you could have a conversation with the person next to you.
The service was good, the staff were knowledgeable about the beers and food and they were able to answer any questions I had. The food was amazing, best Bar-B-Que I have ever had hands down. Everything on the menu is good and their chicken wings are out of this world. The beer is a nice touch that you don't have to choose between BMC but you can wash the food down with a nice local craft beer. Awesome place, worth it for the food alone, but the beer is really a nice touch.

I stopped here on a Wednesday night with my daughter, being that we were in the mood for good BBQ and we were in Manhattan. This restaurant is a surprising find in west Harlem, at least for me. Really cool atmosphere with lots of wood decor, old movie posters, and biker-themed stuff too. Not as much dino-related pictures as I'd expected. There were about 25 tables with seating for maybe 150+ people (just a guesstimate).

There were about 30 taps, plenty of good craft beer choices but nothing outstanding. As an example of what was offered, I had a Sixpoint Rye when we were seated and a Dale's Pale Ale with dinner. $5 and $6 respectively.

The food is really good and reasonably priced. Not very fancy but delicious and plentiful. A good stop for dinner but not a recommended stop if you're only looking for a beer. Manhattan has too many excellent alternatives versus this.

So I had read the reviews of this place and was expecting a pretty good selection...They have a board with their 23 taps listed, but no prices...

Beer wise I was less than impressed....The most surprising things on the board were stone arrogant bastard, victory hop devil, and rogue dead guy....and I have come to find these things pretty common.

I stopped into grab a snack and drink a beer before I met my girlfriend for lunch...I got an arrogant bastard and a side of mac and cheese and my total was $10.75....I then asked the bar tended how much the bastard was...he says "it's $7.50." OK so now I know I am new to new york, but I have been exploring the beer bars alot....The other week I got a stone old guardian at hop devil for six dollars...the same day I went to dinosaur I also went to DBA...DBA was selling the bastard and the smoked porter for $6...I know that $1.50 more is not that much, but this was one of the most expensive beers I have had in the city.

I'm glad I checked it out and the mac and cheese was really good, but I don't think I will be going back for the beer...really expensive and overall not too impressed by the selection.

I had the good fortune to be ushered here yesterday in the wonderful company of Slander, Spesh and Heather (Mrs Spesh). Sits in a big-ass brick building on the upper west side, right under the Westside Highway and on the edge of Harlem. The inside is not as large as you'd think, but with plenty of tables and chairs nonetheless. Lots of tables in the back/left beyond the hostess stand, with a bar to the front right and more tables/chairs in the right corner. Decorated with lots of license plates, old posters, odd metal sculptures of bikes and choppers... but also with loads of weathered wood which gives it a Texas Roadhouse feel. They served up 23 drafts, and it was a nice list: Bluepoint, Victory, Brooklyn, Sixpoint, plus some more general stuff like Stella and Sammy... A number of bottles are available, too, though it seemed like Red Stripe and Corona, etc were more prevalent than the good stuff like Hennepin.
The food came out quickly and was quite good (though not in Redbones category, imho). My Pulled Pork Sammich with fries and baked beans was so filling. My fellow BAs feasted on the Tres Hombres, a pulled pork, brisket and ribs platter. Prices were fair, considering we're in NYC here. And our server was friendly, quick and accessible. Cool place, with a nice bier list!

I'm from upstate NY, so I had been waiting and waiting for this to open in December 2004. Their first 2 restaurants have been in Syracuse and Rochester for several years. Since this one opened, I've made the trek to Harlem probably 7 or 8 times, the most recent of which was this past Tuesday night.

Atmosphere is great. Lot's of great pictures/kinckknacks/sign, etc. hanging all over the place. Hot chick in a bikini lying on a motorcycle in the area near the bar. And so you understand, this place was founded by a couple of bikers. The locations in Syracuse and Rochester have bikes lined up around the block when the weather allows. In those locations, you get this bizzare mix of bikers, students, businessmen and couples with children. This location gets a diverse mix as well, but I haven't been there when there were a lot of bikers though. They slow smoke everything they make on premises, so when you walk in you can smell the smoke and when you leave it sticks to you.

The quality of the food and beers is good. The only complaint I have is that they tend to put non-dark beers in chilled pints, so make sure to tell them you don't want the chilled pint if you are like me and can't stand chilled pints.

Service is good, but not great, but that's how it's supposed to be because at its heart this is a biker joint. The bartender was a yound guy who was nice and attentive, but he wasn't too knowledgable about beer. The waitstaff will take orders from multiple tables and put them all in at the same time. But the food is all slow smoked, so it's already generally done and ready to go, so you don't wait for your food anyway. It comes right out.

The beer selection here seems to be getting better all the time. There are 23 taps. When I was there one of the taps was a Saranac craft soda and there were a handful of throwaways (Bud, Stella, Coors light, etc.) But then they have a good selection otherwise and its mostly regional and local stuff. They had the Sixpoint Sweet Action and Porter, the Ithaca Nut Brown, a couple of brooklyn beers, a couple of Magic Hats, a couple of Victory, etc. They also have their own beer called the Dinosaur Ape Hanger Ale, which is contract brewed by Middle Ages out of Syracuse. I tend to feel that a good ale goes perfect with authentic BBQ and usually have this with my meal. And this is new- they are now filling growlers.

The food here is ridiculously good. It's one of the few legitimate BBQ places in NYC and in my opinion it's the best. For an app, you have to get the BBQ'd chicken wings with the Wango Tango sauce. Instead of deep frying them, they slow smoke them for hours and hours and hours before slathering the sauce on and finishing them on the grill. Juiciest wings you will ever have. Wango Tango sauce is a habanero bbq sauce that is hot but not too hot and it's just awesome. Mind blowing chicken wings. And for a side with your dinner, get the bbq baked beans. They put sausage and very finely shredded pulled pork in the beans. Best I've ever had. The ribs are unbelievably tender and smoky. The pulled pork is probably the best I've had too, because it's also really smoky. Brisket is good. I always stick with the ribs for the most part though as that's one of my favorite foods.

Prices are reasonable as beers were $4.50. A full rack of ribs is $21, but a half rack will suit most people. I love this place and strongly recommend it to everyone. I think no food goes better with american craft ales than american bbq and this is the best bbq in NYC.

Oh yeah.

Anyone who lives in or around NYC should make the trip to this place. At roughly 131st and Broadway, it is a short walk from the 1 train stop on 125th street. Oh, but how it's worth it...

From the outside, it looks like some sort of crazy Chinese Movie Theater! Lots of red and yellow lights indicate what's churning inside... or rotating on a spit, that is. Lots of barbecue! Top scores for atmosphere. New York Style Barbecue through and through. Big industrial style warehouse, with a cellar like quality and massive leaded glass windows. Somewhat dark and candlelit, which provides a nice accessory to the flaming barbecue.

And the aroma! The smell of burning wood, burning flesh, and my burning grumbling stomach as I walk in. Smoky paradise. Bring on the meat!

Or the beer... I love the connection between barbecue and craft microbrews. It is growing! At least two dozen microbrews on draft, all of them hand-carved on wooden plaquets behind the bar. Many locals, lots of high-quality quaffable stuff. Mmmm.

The food? Spicy chicken with collard greens and baked beans for me. And hot corn bread too. Absolutely delicious with ample portions and great service.

Damn I love this place. I'm going. That's it. I'm going again.

So, I unload the Oranges into my car and hoof it across the parking lot and up a 1/2 block to Dinosaur. I could've gotten me a front row center parking spot but I had no way of knowing. And it would've been nice too because the snow's coming down good...
Dinosaur is housed in a seemingly out of place old brickish building along the Westside Highway in Harlem. A "three sides of an octogon" shaped bar lies off to the right as you enter, seating for about a dozen and a half. It's got a large dark wood bar back with mirrored pieces and carved wood decorations. 2 rows of track lighting overhead and 1 mounted TV above in the corner, a great source of contention for some angry man who wanted to watch something else on the only TV in the house.
In an open area in the front corner rest a half dozen raised bench tables along the windows out on 12th Avenue, the space decorated with license plates and old B movie posters with titles like "Nurse's Report", "Girls in Prison" and "Angel's Wild Women", certainly worthy rentals.
Anyhoo, beyond the bar is an open kitchen where they do their Barbeque thing and the other side of the room holds about 30 tables of various sizes and shapes running to the rear of the room.
23 taps. Some interesting selections. Mostly micros (Middle Ages, Ithica, Rogue, Stone, Victory, Brooklyn, Ommegang, Flying Dog, Magic Hat, Blue Point, Blue Moon, Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams, Sugar Hill, Abita) and a handful of imports (Duvel, Belhaven, Stella, Youngs, Lindeman's, Negra Modelo). They've also got about 2 dozen wah wah bottles and a half dozen cans, plus wines, sodas, & teas. I had a Stone Smoked Porter and a Middle Ages Impaled Ale while waiting on my to go order.
I did the "Tres Hombre" (three meat sampler) which is pulled pork, beef brisket and ribs. The barbeque was really quite excellent. Even the sides (Syracuse style salt potatoes and barbeque beans) were damn good. Apparently, they've got 3 wood smokers out back. They do a nice job, yeah. I could easily get into the habit of running the length of 125th Street to grab food to go when I come back over the Triboro Bridge into Manhattan every night.

This is the new Dinosaur NYC outpost. Easy to get to off of the 125 st exit of the westside highway, this place is in western Harlem, NYC. The BBQ served up here was decent but not great, they do a better job on the BBQ side in Syracuse, but hopefully the food will improve with some more time braking in the smokers, NYC chefs etc. The beer situation is pretty darn good. The semi circle bar is located up front, with 23 taps and probably over 25 in bottles. They import a few tap selections from central NY like middle ages and Ithica brew. They had Stone Smoked Porter, a selection from victory, Bluepoint and Brooklyn. Bottle highlights were Duvel, Lindemans, Negra modello, Flying Dog, they even have cans of Genny cream. Looks like they paid some attention to their selections to provide a wide range of beer choices. Beer for Macro swillers, and fine stuff for folks with more discerning palates. Pleanty of good beer to consume with BBQ. This palce is certaintly worth a visit, just watch out for long lines to sit and eat at a table during peak times.
