Just got back from a bike ride down the green way and stopped by fairway to get some stuff for a picnic.

For those who have never been to fairway its basically like a whole foods, but with out the natural food standards...so you can get organic foods and Oreos at the same time...I feel like there would be decent service in most of the other departments, but around the beer there was really no one to be found.

Check out the huge walkin cooler ( they supply jackets if your cold), and you will find meat, seafood, milks, tofu (and meatless products), and a small shelf with cold six packs and 12 packs on it....

in another part of the store, close to the registers there is a larger beer selection....they do a good job with the macros, and a pretty decent import and micro selection. Great prices Sierra Nevada ($8.49 a sixer),
Ithaca Beer co. all sixers(except cascazilla unfortunately) for $6.99....select brooklyn sixers for $7.99, Local 1 $8.99, Hop Devel from Victory for $8.99, Vintage packaged Aventinus for $7.49(I don't think I have ever seen this before), and Scaldi's Prestige ($50). They also had Gaffel Kolsch for $2.19 a bottle. (this is just a small sampling)

Since I was on my I just ended up with an Ithaca Brown sixer for $6.99....don't go out of your way, but if your checking out Toast or Dino BBQ for dinner stop and get some beer to take home! ( I gave this a pretty long review because it had not been done in a couple years)

yeah, so it's like 3ish and Big Fish is on at 5 and I'm thinkin' that it doesn't look like we've got too much snow yet and I should be able to get over the bridge and down to that Dinosaur Barbeque place and back in under 2 hours, sure, that's reasonable. The roads are filled with stupid people who can't drive in the small amount of snow that we've gotten so far. The Westside Highway is a mess as people are driving in 2 lanes at once making my weaving in and out to pass them on my downtown slalom course dangerously reckless fun. Coasting down the 125th Street ramp, I spy Fairway Market at the bottom and think how much I'd enjoy a bag of Oranges about now...
The place is huge. It's neatly sectioned off into various departments, produce, hot prepared foods, meats, cheese, coffee zone, very nicely done up, not what I was expecting for this 'hood. I walked through this flip flop doors into a giant walk in cooler room. I'm not talking a 'fridge, I'm talking a massive expanse, larger than most corner store bodegas, with rows of dairy and juices and all sorts of stuff you generally need to keep cold, but there's no damn beer in here. I have to hunt around for it a while and find the display out near the cash registers. There's a mountainous display of macros, standard lower food chain imports (Henieken, Newcastle) and obvious micros (Sam Adams, Pete's, Saranac). But then over here... here, where I'm pointing, over here, on this rack thing, they've got some stuff. Local and Regional micros (Brooklyn, Smutty, Buffalo Bill Pumpkin, Blue Point, Victory, Magic Hat, New Amsterdam, Ithica Pale Ale, 4 Ommegang's, Allagash Special batch 8 bombers), not so regionals (Lagunitas, Stone bombers), Belgians (Chimay, Chouffe, Saison DuPont, Delirium Tremons, St. Sebastian's dark & golden, Stella, Lindemans), Germs (Aventinus, Ayinger octo, Gaffel Kolsch, Weltenberger Kolster), English (Old Speckled Hen, Holy Grail, Hobgoblin, Young's Dirty Dick, and at least 4 Sam Smith's) and Hitchachino and Baladin Nora this and that.
You're in a market so there really is no service factor. Better than average selection for a supermarket and certainly the best thing going on in this corner of Harlem. Now I've just got to get across the street to Dinosaur and get home by 5...

Fairway's uptown lacation, easy to find off of the 125 st exit of the west side highway. Only a block or two from the Dinosaur BBQ spot. This is a large, industrial feeling food market, you can fill your entire shopping list in this place, tons of fine cheese, fish, meets, gourmet foods, with good prices. Sort of like an urbanized Stew Leonards, less gimacky and more gourmet. The suds are to be found in a wall display near the registers. Decent amount of sixers of the better Macros, Bass, Saranac, New Castle etc and a moderate selection of Belgians and other assorted better brews. Dupont, St Sebastain, etc. Selection of high end and micros was mediocre and dissapointing. Good place to shop for food and then pick up some worthwhile beer while you're there, not a very exciting beer only destination.
