As the American-style craft beer culture broadens, the crossing of boundaries doesn't exactly lead to every brewer wanting to make beers just like those in America. Rather, when brewers in, say- Brazil, open up its taste, it's going to show a local flavor- and I welcome that in every sip.

Upon decanting the beer, its dark and luscious settling shows a dark "bark" brown with cola highlights and some chestnut hues slivering through. Regardless of its hazy wood appearance, its foam character builds upon the beer like creamy espresso creme. Dainty and confident, its low stature leads to long retention with gentle swirls of the glass.

Its sweet and toasty aromatics lead with heavy molasses and buckwheat honey. Its following columbian coffee, toasted almond, and slightly milk chocolate scent gives the stout a softer-than-usual demeanor. Heading into taste, more nutty aromas emerge with impressions of peanut, cashew and pecan.

As the taste opens, the beer's robust sweetness rushes upon the palate with the flavor of deep toffee, off-molasses, rich honey and a pep of maple. Its middle palate grows in hearty sweetness as a fruity grape, licorice and rootish chicory taste is revealed. Finishing on the sweeter side, balances of smoked embers, fennel and vinous alcohol rounds out the beer's luscious taste.

Medium-full in body, the beer's body is light and carefree- allowing all the roasty sweetness to run amuck. As ts light creaminess separates from the malt, a dryness ensues which can also reveal unpleasant taste- none of that happens with this stark and stern flavor spread.

At the end of the day, Colorado's Guanabara has impressed me with yet another flavor that borrows from America's high gravity nature, but also addresses the earthy sweetness that's better appreciated by the taste of South America- and deservingly so.

Brought back from MN in my luggage. VAL 13A6015 on the bottle. Poured into a chalice.

WOW! Who thought Brazil could make a great beer much less a great stout! Before I had this bought this beer I had never heard of the Brazilian brewery. My expectations were low. The black rapadura fruit definitely gives it complexity, especially in the aroma if one takes the time to look behind the dark fruit. A really great stout. 4.5

A – Pours a black with a reddish tint, opaque with a thin dark tan head that dissipates quickly, some alcohol legs, good lacing 4.5

S – Dark fruit, raisins, dates, some whiskey, a tinch of spice hiding behind all the dark fruit, even a bit of smoke 4.75

T – An even combination of roasty malt, dark fruit, followed at the end by some whiskey. Alcohol is evident but not invasive, some sweetness in the middle, a tinch of caramel. 4.5

MF – Medium-bodied, semi-dry finish. I like the finish a lot – does not finish slick or heavy or syrupy like its taste might belie. 5.0

A-Dark brown pour with a one finger tan head that leaves virtually no lacing.

S- I can smell all of the 10.5% abv. There are some mild dark chocolate undertones here, and the overall smell is sweet and rich.

T- The ABV didn't come through in the taste as it did in the smell, this thang is smooooth! Subtle bitterness from the hops, and the dark rich malt is very noticable. The sweetness from the black rapadura cane sugar is also a welcomed addition.

M- This drinks rather syrupy and leaves the mouth slightly coated with imperial stout goodness after every swallow.

O-Guanabara is a interesting take on a Russian Imperial Stout. It was less hoppy than I anticipated, and I enjoyed the addition of the cane sugar for sweetness. I have now tried three beers from Cervejaria Colorado: Bertho, Vixnu, and Guanabara. I have been extremely satisfied with their brews, and I will continue to look for them at the store.

imperial stout from brazil with a raw unrefined crystalline sugar added, which imparts not only additional fermentables for strength, but also a lovely molasses earthy sweetness in the finish which is just right. the color on this is a matte black color, with less than an inch of head, patchy and tan. the nose is curious, sweet, but still with all the dark roasted barley bitterness and chocolate malt density. earthy in a new way upon the first sip, its not just malty but also sort of volcanic or ancient and hard, difficult to explain really, but the grain bitterness melds into a beautiful raw sugar sweetness with an expertly hidden alcohol kick, which can be felt but not detected in aroma or flavor. this is quite a bit different from the american big stouts, lighter in body for sure, but there is a craftsmanship to this that is very pronounced. a delicious beer in all facets, and one i have frankly overlooked for far to long.
