With the newer flavor of beer extending beyond boundaries, it's a lot of fun seeing Brazilian craft beer infiltrating the U.S. craft beer market. Doing so is this domesticated brown ale that carries prescribed nutty flavor to excite the senses and sooth the soul...

Bertho kicks off with a mostly clear, cedar-stained hue that captures light with golden highlights and deeper mahogany tones. Its mid-statured head floats the beer with a dainty foam and semi-stern lace that intermittently speckles the glass.

To the nose, the ale is bright with notions of marmalade and honeysuckle. Although these scents are soft, its grainy scent of toast, bread, husk and starch all offer up a roundness that fits like a glove. Light on hop presence, the ale carries a nutty earthiness that carries its balance.

To taste, the beer is highly nutty, buttery and earthy as the taste of cola nut and cashew coat the mouth with grain sweetness, cola and toast. Its bread crust flavor bleeds into the nutty taste with ease, en route to a thin caramel middle and a finish that's rooted in earth, subtle bark, and cola nut to close.

Its beautiful texture is soft with bready malt texture, but also the spiciness of rustic Vienna malt accompanied by grain spices, light minty warmth and smooth alcohol spice. Its trailing carbonation extends nicely into a toasty finish with dry and earthen spice to close.
nu
Bertho is a fascinating ale that carries a lot of nutty flavor, not sure all of it is of nut additions; its complexity lies in the talk of grain and additional nuts. Its a masterful blend even though its taste is somewhat pedestrian.

600 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly cloudy reddish copper color with a 2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, nuttiness, brown sugar, brown bread, biscuit, pear, apple, floral, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with solid complexity and balance of dark/bready malt, Brazil nuts, and yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, nuttiness, brown sugar, biscuit, brown bread, light chocolate, pear, apple, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, toast, nuttiness, brown sugar, biscuit, brown bread, light chocolate, pear, apple, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and robustness of dark/bready malt, Brazil nut, and yeast ester flavors; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderate creamy and lightly slick mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice imperial brown ale, but it pretty much feels like an ESB in flavor. Good balance and robustness of dark/bready malt, Brazil nut, and yeast ester flavors; and smooth to sip on for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

very much like a traditional nut brown, brewed with brazil nuts, from brazil, cool. mostly clear chestnut color with an inch or so of frothy white head with excellent retention. the nose is a little sweet from the malt, but its not chocolate malt so much as it is a classic caramel amber malt, sweet and earthy. i actually do taste brazil nuts in this mixed in with the sweet grain, it sort of reminds me of christmas when we always have brazil nuts in a dish on the counter. a solid nuttiness on this all the way, with a round residual sugar finish, and not quite enough hops for me to call this balanced. an impressive first beer from this operation, which apparently moved from colorado to brazil and got this brewery going. nice take on an amber nut brown type. very drinkable.

Beer appears russet to crimson with an inch of tan head. Scents include brown bread, prominent yeast, apples, molasses, dark fruits. Aggressive alcohol. Harsh, sweet and instantly cloying. Yeast character is overabundant and bites the palate. The imperial stout from this brewery was much better. No way I can finish this. Not again.

Picked this up at the Biergarten in Jenks.... Unfathomable freshness coding on the bottle

Pours caramel with 3+ fingers of quickly falling tan head. Nice head retention & lacing

S: Big nuttiness, toastyness, a touch of leafy & grassy hops

T: A little nuttiness, toastyness, leafy hops & dryness up front, plus a touch of dryness & cinnamon & even a little brown sugar. More cinnamon, more leafy hops, dryness & a touch of brown bread, Amaretto & more brown sugar. Finishes with leafy hops, tobacco, a touch more cinnamon, toastyness & dryness; almost gave this a 4.0

MF: Medium bodied, soft carbonation, a bit thinner than I hoped for, but warming

This one grew on me as it warmed, a different breed of brown. I am fairly impressed by this, I look forward to trying other offerings from these guys! Fairly easy to drink for the ABV

600ml. Rust colored pour, half finger of white head.

Aroma, toffee like maltiness, quite nutty. Some toasted notes along with tobacco. A little red fruit or apple almost. Faintest herbal hops

Taste, Toffee and peanut brittle. There are large leather, tobacco and leafy components as well. The English type hop bitterness just balances things.

About mid body, ample carbonation. Hides the 8% and drinks quite easily. Just a little much with the nuttiness, but it is as advertised.

Rogue Hazelnut is what comes to mind. I did enjoy this quite a bit, though not something I would reach for two in a row. Definitely much more of an English Brown or Extra.
