I wasn't overly impressed with this one because it seems to be lacking in hops, a key ingredent in the making of IPA's.
Perhaps it's old, perhaps not. It's the chance you take with beer stores.
It didn't look too bad. It had hazy clarity and a tall beige head that receeded slowly.
In the aroma all I got was sweet caramel malts. I tried to sniff out some hops but could not.
In the taste one finds sweet caramel malts and then some hoppy bitterness which was quite intense. The bitterness comes through about half way.
Drinks smooth and gentle. It's clean with a bitter ending.
Overall I need hops. This beer I could find none.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

Gotta love the sorta Macedonian flag thing they've got going on behind the cauldron, eh? Anyway, this stuff pours a clear brass-amber topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises biscuit, very light caramel, pine resin, light leek, and a nice helping of flowers. The taste brings in more of the same, the pine (now a touch earthier) and the caramel-y biscuit balanced very nicely, while still allowing the hops to have their full say. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and drying finish. Overall, a nice IPA, one that shows that even the West Coast knows how to balance an IPA.

Appearance: good clarity, amber orange, but leaning more towards amber with thick moussey off white head

Aroma: biscuit and toast notes with some floral and pine hop notes. Well balanced aroma but not particularly aromatic

Taste: surprisingly malty for an IPA. Well developed toast and biscuit notes that finish nicely bitter and hoppy with some balanced pine and floral notes.

Mouthfeel: full and smooth. A very comfortable and easy drinking beer that has good carbonation and full mouthfeel

Overall: A pretty solid IPA overall, I wouldn't put it in my top 10 but its not bad. Good balance and well developed malt character but lacking in some hop flavor that I was desiring when I bought this IPA.

Pours a clear, orangy color with a decent head. Smell is fairly strong and all oniony hops. The taste is similar. It's a well balanced, well brewed beer, but I can't dig the oniony flavor. If you like Deviant Dales, you'll probably like this one a lot too. A tad on the bitter side too.

A - Great orangish amber pour with two fingers of off white head. Good amount of carbonation coming up. Nice head retention.

S - Great floral hops off the bat. Has a tangy scent of fruit as well. Lemony/citurs. Nice malt characteristics as well.

T - Very nice. not an ordinary hop exploded IPA (nice change). Nice earthy/floral notes from hops. Has a bright flavor too, from the citrus characteristic. Sweet malts are balanced perfectly.

M - Medium body, great across the palate. Very smooth. Good carbonation level.

O - Impressed. I like this west coast IPA out of Oregon. Has a very nice hop/malt balance, but not killer on the hops, very nice.
