22oz bottle from Bruisin Ales (Asheville, NC). 6.99. Served in a Southern Tier snifter. Great bottle art. It'd be nice if they'd dated it...

Dark amber with big 2.5 finger foamy head. Nice lacing where the head recedes.

Pine & oranges. Nice.

The opening taste falls a bit flat- a dull biscuity taste. The hops kick in for a lingering sour bitter grapefruit finish. This is not at all what I want in an IPA.

Light to medium bodied. It coats pretty well but still a little lighter than I'd prefer. Enough carbonation to make the lingering bitter finish tingle on the tongue.

I was a little dissappointed with this one. The hopportunity wasn't knocking much at all- and when it finally did, the flavor was sour and lacking. There's a chance it was an older bottle but Caldera didn't see fit to date it so it gets rated as-is. I'll smile at the label art but pass on it in the future.

Hazy amber in color, high carbonation nets a three finger high parchment colored head. The foam is frothy and thick, high retention that never does go away and dense clumps of lacing.

Whole grain toast and caramel sweetness from the malt, a standard fare with a bit of fig and red fruit esters from the yeast. Hop aroma is rather poor, grassy and some pungent earthy herbs.

Bread and stale dinner rolls, husky grains and a twinge of metallic in the after taste. Hop flavors are hay and some pine but largely muted. IPA strength alpha acids, very earthy. Rather disappointing.

Drinkable, medium bodied with carbonation that is average to overdone. Alcohol is hidden well. Drying and earthy bitterness makes the mouthwater a bit leaving the grainy notes and alcohol to lay across the tongue.

By my standards this is an amber and a pretty poor one, lots of playful fruit comes out with a drying bitterness but the malt is grainy and porous and the hops are just not there. Caldera is one of those breweries that has faded from memory recently. Their standard IPA in a can a much better representative of what they can do with hops.
