A: Pours a nice deep orange with a very tall and dense light brown head. Head fades extremely slowly with top notch retention. Great island remaining behind. Moderate but thick streaks of lacing.

S: Oh yeah. Heavy chocolate with lots of oaky vanilla. Almost makes me think milk stout, there is a healthy dose of the oaky vanilla but also some marshmallow and even nougat. Not far from smelling a three musketeers.

T: More chocolate up front. Really nice. Grows stronger in the middle somehow. Again, a little bit of that nougat towards the finish. Some toasted, roasted malt character as well with light char and cocoa. Little touch of drying, charred oak lingering in the aftertaste.

M: Nice medium bodied, smooth and creamy.

O: Very nice chocolate porter. Super smooth, creamy and full mouthfeel. Goes down so easily - one of the best drinking beers I've had. This reminds me a lot of Samuel Smith Chocolate Stout if I'm honest. Just bigger, bolder and if I'm honest - it's just plain better.

from a bottle bought at Star Grocery on Claremont on the Oakland/Berkeley border.

A: pours a deep brown, some scattered lacing

S: big chocolate odors up front

T: really incredibly nice, delicious chocolate flavor, which it nails as well as any chocolate beer I've had.

M: good medium-plus body, getting towards 'creamy'. The barrel aging hasn't left it overly thick or syrupy - not that that would necessarily be a bad thing.

O: outstanding porter, one of my absolute favorites. One of the best of the category I'd call "dessert beers".
