2013 vintage. Poured from a white wax capped bomber into a snifter, the beer is a hazy, muddled, opaque, dark brown coloring with a thin film of head that quickly disappears. Aromas of milk chocolate, vanilla, booze, and wood highlights. Smells great, with the nose leaning towards the sweet side. Very inviting and smooth characteristics. Flavors are chocolate forward, with a solid blast of booze in the backbone. It lures you in with sweet and smooth, all while gently warming you with the increased ABV. Well done. Chocolate notes are also highlighted by vanilla and cream highlights, and hints of bitterness throughout. Very balanced and drinkable. The body is dry, but smooth and full at the same time. Slightly more bitterness in the chocolate characteristic that makes up the aftertaste, combining with the booze character to give a little bite along with the warmth. The finish is slightly boozy, with a subtle dryness accompanying the warmth left behind. This is unique, and damn tasty. Worth seeking out.

This pours with a rather thin foam. Not a head to speak of at first pour, but a little more vigor gets a rise out of it. Quite sudsy and creamy slurping out of the narrow glass. Color is dark red-tinged brown and appears very chocolatey. Smells of cocoa and vanilla.

As advertised, this tastes like chocolate. I'm not sure that's enough to make a reputation, but it does taste exactly like bitter chocolate. The barrel flavor is deep and dank, and there is just a hint of booze and more of the oak and vanilla. As this warms up a little the malty, burnt sugar flavors and some blackened grains emerge. Still the middle part of the taste is hot with alcohol, and then it finishes with a quite bitter twang.

If you like chocolate you will like this. It's rather austere for all the candy flavors, and finishes on the dry side From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Olive Tree Market in San Diego.

Serving type- On tap poured into a snifter glass

Appearance- Dark milk chocolate color, think consistency, not much of a head

Smell- AMAZING Big chocolate notes, bourbon coming in big time nice roasted notes one of the most intense chocolate smelling beers I have ever had

Taste- AMAZING again big chocolate in the front of the tongue, smooth melted chocolate almost like you melted a high quality chocolate bar and but in directly in the beer just awesome

Mouth feel- Smooth classic porter mouth feel, softness from the chocolate notes, a bit to bite but in a good way from the bourbon aging done on this beer

Overall- One of the best beers I have ever had this was AMAZING on tap and I can only imagine getting a few bottles of this and aging them for a few years and how good they would turn out just outstanding....A + Beer for sure

Absolutely delicious chocolate porter. I had heard people raving about his beer, but was hesitant to buy it at $16.99 for the bomber. I finally bought the last bottle on the shelf after a few months and now I'm kicking myself for not buying the entire case when I had the chance. All I can say is that if you like imperial stouts/porters, especially those that are barrel-aged/brewed with chocolate/espresso/cacao - then you will certainly love this beer. A must have!

Super chocolaty notes, with a mild coffee undertone. Strong effervescence mouth feel, and solid color and head. Porter bordering on texture and taste of a stout. Good from start to finish, leaves you wanting more. Tough find certainly worth the price.

Big thanks to angrybabboon for sharing the bottle.

Appearance: Pours black. Hints of dark browns at the edges when held to direct light. Head is straight khaki and drops to small cap and collar in short order. Moderate carbonation on the pour.

Smell: Loaded with chocolate and vanilla. Solid roasted malt with some darker cocoa elements. A touch of coffee bean. Sweet, very sweet. Almost milky with a ton of milk chocolate and artificial vanilla. A touch of grassy and herbal hops with a rougher roasted malt edge. Vanilla chocolate milk. Very slight burnt edge. Something akin to marshmallow.

Taste: A more balanced approach than the nose. Heavy on the vanilla but it's smooth and hints at fresh vanilla bean. Layers of cocoa, milk chocolate, and some darker nibs. A touch of coffee. Slight almost milky sweetness. Malts are nicelybroasted with a slight burnt edge. Slightly sweet malts with some added caramelized sweetness. Has some mellow backing grassy elements with a mildly herbal hop finish.

Mouthfeel: Smooth medium body. Creamy with a moderate carbonation and a mildly dry finish.

Overall: Not a bare necessity, but close.

Vanilla ends up running a bit high, but it's a nice porter.

Supposedly this is quite challenging to get unless you live in Oregon. I found it in a grocery store in Vermont. I'm guessing Shaun Hill is behind this.

Consumed 2/18/14

Appearance: Pours deep brown, with an average-sized, light tan head - retains a wispy cap, leaves a nice spotty web of lacing

Smell: Chocolate - truly, a remarkable amount of chocolate - smells somewhere between a milk chocolate bar and chocolate bread - some roasty, toasty malts, but they are in the background , as it's all about the chocolate - an undercurrent of oak and vanilla

Taste: Like drinking a chocolate muffin - milk chocolate, and chocolate bread - nicely toasted and chocolate malts - unexpectedly bready - seriously, this tastes like a chocolate bread, or a chocolate cake - some oak and vanilla in the background

Mouthfeel: Medium body, kind of on the light side considering the amount of chocolate in the flavor, but smooth, nice finish

Overall: Definitely tastes better than licking a chocolate lab (less fur, too)

The chocolate component of this is unexpectedly good. It's delightfully chocolaty, and it doesn't drink like a dessert wine. The oak adds some nice woody notes, but this is really about the chocolate. I'm not sure if this is worth the hype, but if I ever see it again, I'm buying it.

Pours deep and dark brown with deep ruby hue,a thick creamy-like beige head atop that takes its time settling into a frothy mass, rich color and a great well defined head.Vanilla lingers in the nose along praline and toasted oak.A rich creamy feel to the beer it just glides down effortlessly.Caramel/vanilla flavors abound with the chocolate and bourbon flavors playing a small role not hammering you over the head, again praline comes to mind with a tinge of nuttiness, mild roast brings it all together really well. With a beer of this style that's bourbon barrel aged alot of times it tastes like chocolate and bourbon, this goes in a different direction all together and I think it's great. One of the top beers of 2014 for me so far.
