Dulcie and Aylwin's big beer adventure day 6 finds us in Portland and its environs. The chance sighting of a Belmont Station tee-shirt worn by our server at The Cup and Saucer on Hawthorne took us to this shop-cum-bar.
It's not much of an exaggeration to claim this as the best beer shop ever. Maybe it's because we are out of state that the selection seemed to amazing - stuff we never see in Illinois. It's all quality and all interesting.
The Bier Cafe is a massive bonus: you can drink any bottle there that you buy for a modest mark-up; or there is a small but very select range on tap (Oak-Aged Bastard and Hop Stoopid for example).
Some reviews (not on BA) had suggested the staff were arrogant (bastards); we did not find this to be the case, in fact they were friendly and helpful, though I can imagine they would not suffer fools gladly.
Further bonus: they carry a wide range of glassware and I was able to snag some of those Belgian glasses that I was almost dumb enough to pay huge sums on the internet for.
It's a must visit. Unless you are looking for a case of Old Milwaukee.

This place is out near older suburbs. The draft selection is excellent, the bar and seating area are decent, and the bottle selection is outstanding. During our visit we picked up a few bottles of rare Apothecary brews. I will definitely visit this establishment again when we come down to visit Portland.
