This is your typical sports bar with televisions with sports on. The beer is nothing to write home about and definitely nothing to go out of your way to get. Half the time the bartender or waitress does not know much to anything about the beer. Service is nothing special and I have never received great service here. The only reason I ever stop in is because a friend from undergrad wants to play pool or darts or watch a game and the food is cheap for the amount you get. Not a bad place to start off the night with a cheap greasy meal and some beer.

A/Q-This is at its heart a sports bar first, a brew pub second. While I do enjoy both types of atmospheres, this is an important distinction. The beer here comes second. It seems to revel in the fact that is has microbrews than that it could have good microbrews. Nothing is truely terrible, but nothing is worth noting either. They have switched the names of some of their beers lately to reflect the schools in state (Clone, Panther, Hawkeye). Again, this is to reflect sports, not to show you that they care about beer or those schools (no copyrighted images probably means they never sought permission).
S-Service was slow despite the fact that it was no busy. Long periods between beers and when we ordered food. I am not punishing the place too much, as it might not have been their best crew on the waitstaff for a slower night.
Selection- Average for a sports bar in my area...I guess. Not really any imports besides Newcastle or Corona. You might be able to get a Boston lager or Boulevard wheat. Macro beer mostly at a micro bar. Still, if they want to sell their beer, not a bad strategy I suppose.
Food- My food was above average, not great but certainly a decent meal at a decent price. No complaints at all here.
Value- Beer wasn't expensive and shouldnt have been. Food was reasonable priced. An okay place to watch a game more than to enjoy a beer.

Went to Becks this weekend and it was your typical sports bar/micro brewery. TV's every where, trivia monitors like at BW3, memorablia, and sports pictures on the walls, and the brew kettle visable. It is pretty cool how they have the brewing area behind glass. I took about 30 mins to get a table so we went and waited at the upstairs bar till we could be seated. As far as selection goes they had lots of national brews in bottles and only like 4 on tap. Which one was Guiness. they also offered 6 microbrews they make themselves which where pretty average or less. There food is the typical sport bar food.(Steaks,Burgers, Pasta, etc.) Pretty tastey and a resonable value. I would stopback if I was in town.

The atmosphere is pretty nice with lots of lights and colors and TVs, they even have devices which you can play poker on one of the TVs. I wasn't impressed with the staff, when I asked about the Weizenbock he didn't know what I was talking about. I nicely asked the guy to my left if he was drinking the hefeweizen. His opinion was that the beer here was "too fresh", he then pointed to the Brew Kettles and said, look how many people drink here and those don't hold so much. I turned and minded my own business. It just seemed like every question I had made them look less knowledgable and me more like a beer nerd.

I ordered the soup and that was pretty good. The beer at the time was $1.10 on tap. So it didn't seem like this was a bar that took your money.

Selection is ok, they have 4 or 5 regulars and once in a while there are seasonals. They also have Bud and Bud Light.

[EDIT from May 2006:

This place has gotten louder and more annoying and more expensive. The beers, which started off badly brewed, have gotten even worse. And the service, which used to be solid, has fallen to complete shit. If you return one of their tepid, disgusting beers or even refuse a refill, both the waitresses and the bartenders are trained to say "ohh, was that too strong for you." No, it wasn't. It was just one of the most poorly-brewed beers I've ever tasted and you should be ashamed for serving it. Avoid this place at all costs. The Lava Lounge is right down the street and it 100 times better.]

Most of the time, a sports bar that sits less than five miles away from a state university is not the kind of place I would like to frequent. Unless you are a really, really, really big fan of the local team, you're not going to enjoy yourself. There's going to be a lot of drunk, loud, moronic college kids, and there's going to be a lot of drunk, loud, moronic alumni.

But the University of Northern Iowa is different. No one cares about their sports teams. I don't, and I go there. I didn't even know we had a basketball team until we made the NCAA tourney last year (for the first time since 1989). College sports aren't the same here as they are in a lot of places, and so Beck's is completley tolerable. Fairly quiet for a sports bar, with decent music and a docile, older crowd. The fairly decadent atmosphere serves to keep the dirty college kids away, even though their prices really don't hurt.

A pretty wide and somewhat exhaustive selection of brews are available, though the majority of them don't look too appealing. (They have a Mexican Lager, for god's sake.) I tried a couple, and they ranged from okay to pretty good.

It's clear from the get-go that this place is a Sports Bar first and a Brew pub second--it's been open for years but they just added the homebrews a few weeks ago. The kids who serve your drinks mispronounce things, they put fruit in your beer without you asking permission, and they serve all their beers out of icy cold mugs unless you specifically tell them not to. Still, they're friendly.

I can't really think of much else to say except that Becks' beer is surprisingly decent (EDIT: REALLY SHITTY) and their food is pretty damn good. I'd hardly plan a trip to the Cedar Valley just to come here, but if you're in the area it's certainly worth a stop.

Beck's Sports Bar and Grill has been open for years now as a sports bar & restaurant, but only recently have they opened their Brewpub. As far as I know, it's the only brewpub in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area, so it's good to have homemade microbrewed beer close to home. It didn't take long for me to get in there to sample their beer, I was there opening night and the night after as well.

Beck's is located right on University Avenue. You can't miss the place, it is a large building and has a huge sign out front. It has two levels, but looks like it only has one from the front. If you drive around back, you can come in on the ground floor (which has some pool tables, darts, etc.. as well as a 2nd bar). The main entrance is located right in front and you come in on the 1st floor. As soon as you walk in the glass doors, you can see the brewing tanks ahead of you, to the left. The brewing tanks are encased in a see-through glass brewing room (which looks damn cool, I might add).

The main bar can be seen as soon as you walk in, and is on the opposite side of the building as the entrance. Since it is also a restaurant, tables and booths are located throughout. The interior is very nice, with a typical modern "Sports Bar" look. Sports memorabilia covers the walls and there literally isn't a seat in the place where you can't see a TV (my kinda place).

Ok, let's cut to the chase. The beer... When I visited last, they had 5 different homemade microbrews on-tap. In my personal opinion, they are touch & go..the quality definitely is dependant on how fresh their batches are. The service has been great everytime I've been there, but there are mostly college kids working there, and they are fairly uninformed about craft beer in general, but I assume that will improve with time.

I recommend eating while you're there. You can't go wrong with something simple like a burger, nachos, tenderloin, etc. (and some of their food is quite good). No five-star food here but come on, it's a sports bar, what do you expect?

Anyways..overall, Beck's is a great place to stop, eat, and, of course, try their microbrews. Their prices for their own beers are very modest, and worth a shot, but don't get your hopes up. Make a trip and go see for yourself.
