Had a pint of this on tap at the Winking Judge for birthday type celebrations. Served in a standard pint glass. Re- reviewing this for my 550th full review, it was good before but maybe it's better on tap?

Appearance - a very dark cola brown, nearing black in color. A very small film of head was poured and it receded into a thin wisp of foam rather quickly. Dark opaque and ominous.

Smell- the best of both worlds, some light roasted characteristics namely caramel and molasses with a full bouquet of citrus notes as well.

Taste - pretty much like the nose, a bunch of roasty flavours, just a touch of bitter coffee before the hop bomb drops with a brief explosion of citrus fruit. That is then followed by a reversion to molasses and other malt flavours.

Mouthfeel- smooth reasonably light bodied and just a bit of prickly carbonation to top it off.

Overall - a very good beer with rich flavours and a good balance between the roasted aspect and the hoppy aspect of a black ale. Definitely worth a shot. A fine beer for my 550th review.

I liked this but I prefer the Alley Kat offering more.

This beer is quite close to black, completely opaque though not with a heavy body. The head is a solid brown one a full finger in height with good retention, thick and fluffy. Lacing is sturdy ad fairly thick as well with some good stick.
The smell is primarily hoppy with lots of raw leaf, citrus and wood. A bit of roast is in there, but not to the fullest effect.
The taste follows with a bit more dry cocoa into the finish, but it also develops a very slight astringency as it goes. It actually fits fairly well, and never gets too harsh, but it's just a bit noticeable.
The body is medium with a good mix of crisp brightness and roasty, powdery dryness. It has a nice creaminess rolling through that adds a lot of sweetness.

wow! I really enjoyed this. At first the taste is very bitter but it quickly reveals a dark chocolate and coffee flavour. The hop taste is very complex and the mouthfeel is like drinking a dark roast espresso. The mild carbonation makes this beer surprisingly smooth. The taste is varied with each sip but overall, a very enjoyable dark ale that overs a unique experience. I have been very impressed with the beers i have tried from Flying Monkey and i look forward to what else they have to offer!

Review according to BJCP2008 (style 14B - adapted). Bottle 35.5cl - Batch ?. AROMA: nice hop aroma with citrusy, floral, resinous and pine notes. low malty background. APPEARANCE: dark ruby color with light brown, creamy, persistant head. clear. TASTE: high hop flavour with floral and piney notes. low malt flavour with slight coffee notes in the aftertaste. High bitterness that lingers into the aftertaste. PALATE: medium-low body with medium carbonation. No astringency. OVERALL: a nice IPA derived beer. maybe should have more roasted flavours and flavours.
