Lots of dried tea notes on the nose and palate. Very earthy, herbal hop character, backed by a strong bitterness of pine. Much different than the fruity/tropical IPAs IMO. A nice IPA from these guys!

I had this beer in a 20 oz pint glass at a bar in Toronto called Stack, which is located north of Lawrence subway station.

Look: The body has the same colour as a dark honey, is slightly transparent and has a white one-finger head. This IPA has an excellent head retention as it recedes to a thin white layer that covers nearly all of the drink. All in all, I love the lacings as well as the traces of foam the beer leaves on the glass as it is consumed.

Smell: The pine woods are subtly in the background while the notes of lemon complement those of orange zests and even a few tropical fruits.

Taste: The palate makes a quick transition from its fruits to the pine woods.

Feel: There is a little bit of creaminess as a small quantity of the beer stays in the mouth. Moreover, this is the first IPA I have tried which keeps the notes of pine woods mostly intact whilst the beer is in the throat and the solar plexus.

Overall: This is the best IPA from Canada I have drunk when it comes to the after taste. Smashbomb Atomic IPA stands out because of its look and its lasting aftertaste of pine woods. Unfortunately, as others pointed out, the fruity notes were too brief considering that this is an IPA. I would regularly buy this beer despite a minor flaw.

big nose of citrus and pine, plenty of malt to stand on, finishes slighty peppery and bitter. A Canadian hop bomb that can quench the thirst of a freindly neighbor to the south.

Serving Type:355 mL Bottle

A- Deep Amber colour with a 2 finger off-white head with excellent retention. Lots of lacing on the glass.

S- Tropical fruit (guava, passion fruit) and grapefruit from the hops dominate the aroma.

T- Same as aroma but with an extremely bitter finish. More bitter than a lot of DIPA's that I've had. Tasty but only in small hauls.

M- Medium Body and Moderate Carbonation.

O- An excellent example of a Citra Hop IPA. Beautiful tropical fruit and citrus flavours come through but this brew seems to have an overly bitter finish. Still a great brew but could be so much better with a slightly less bitter finish.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a plastic pint cup, this beer pours a medium to dark, clear, amber color with a slightly off white head about an inch thick when first poured that settles down a bit, and when it does settle down there are clumpy swirly mounds of foam that are sticking up on the beer's surface. Thy eventually settle down. Good lacing. Strong cirrus hop aromas along with toasted, biscuity malt notes. The taste is pretty much the same, with a nice citrus, resinous hop bitterness upfront that gives way to biscuity, caramel malt sweetness. Good balance of flavors, but the hop bitterness does tend to dominate a bit. Has a slightly crisp, but mostly very smooth, creamy, frothy medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Easy to drink in the good way. A pretty solid IPA here all around.

Pours a dark copper color with frothy half inch head. Aroma is all hops. Goes down a little harsh, extremely bitter. This amount of bitterness is more expected from a Double IPA. A little too bitter for my tastes. There are better America IPA's out there.

Pours a dark copper bordering amber. Sticky lacing is left behind from a froth that recedes to a film. The smell is hoppy with some toffee aroma from malts.

In the taste, resin, pine and dank herb. Sweetness checks in briefly before subsiding and the ale has grapefruit rind throughout. Bright and hoppy, but not super tropical. This is just a well made, earthy, piney, dank IPA. Fresh tasting and lively on the palate, Smashbomb Atomic IPA is quite satisfying.

Full bodied, smooth, well carbonated. Resins coat the tongue nicely and the hop flavor does not want to let go. I would recommend this to IPA drinkers.

Smooth def no punch you in the face hop taste as the bottle might make you think. Very good IPA for those that don't like hoppy super bitter beers. Solid citrus tastes somewhere in there. Worth a try for sure!

Promising citra nose that pays off in the flavor. Does not blow your head off, but rather delivers a very nice, balanced look at what American IPA could -and should - be.

I picked up a bottle of Flying Monkey's Smashbomb Atomic IPA last week for $2.19 at The Lager Mill. I've never had anything from this brewery before and I thought I would start off with their IPA, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a teku glass.

A- The label looks nice, it's got a good design to it and it's eye catching. It poured a hazy orange color that took on more of an amber red color when held to the light with one and a half fingers worth of creamy and slightly bubbly off white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some sticky lacing behind. This is a pretty nice looking style, but it's a little to hazy for the style.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the fruity hops being the first to show up and they impart some nice citrus rind aromas with a little bit of tropical fruits showing up in the background along with some grassy and slightly earthy hop aromas. Up next comes the malts which show up nicely and they impart a nice pale malt, sweet malt and bready aroma with some doughy yeast showing up in the background. This beer had a pretty nice aroma. I liked the hop profile and it was fairly balanced.

T- The taste seems to be fairly similar to the aroma and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with the malts being the first to show up this time and they impart the same pale malt and bready aspects that they did in the aroma with some doughy yeast still showing up in the background. Up next comes the hops which take on more of an earthy, grassy and spicy hop flavors with a little bit of those citrus rind hops showing up in the background. On the finish there's a medium amount of aspirin like bitterness with a earthy, grassy and spicy hop aftertaste. This was a nice tasting IPA, but I wish the hop profile was more like it was in the aroma.

M- Fairly smooth, a little clean, a slightly crisp, dry on the finish, medium bodied with a lower amount of medium carbonation. This beer had a nice mouthfeel that worked well well with it, but It could use just a little more carbonation.

Overall I thought this was a decent beer and I thought it was a decent example of an American IPA, after that pretty nice aroma I was looking forward to the taste, but I found that it was lacking that nice fruity aspect that it had in the aroma and in my opinion that held this beer back. This beer had ok drinkability, it was fairly smooth, a little clean, slightly crisp, dry on the finish, not too filling and the taste didn't do the best job at holding my attention, one is enough for me, anymore than that and I would start to get bored with it. What I like the most about this beer was the appearance and aroma, to me those were the highlights of this beer and they were both pretty nice. What I liked the least about this beer was that the hop profile in the taste isn't more like it was in the aroma, if it had more of that fruity hop aspect in the taste I think it would be a pretty good IPA. I wouldn't buy this beer again, but I wouldn't turn one down, it's very easy for me to find an IPA that I like more. I can't say I would really recommend this beer, if your a big IPA fan it might be worth a try, but I don't think it will make it to the top of anyone's list. All in all I thought this beer was just ok, it wasn't bad by any means, but I didn't find any aspect to be too impressive and in the end I just wanted a little more out of it, but the balance wasn't bad. This made for an ok first impression for this brewery and I would be interested in trying more beers from them. This was a decent IPA, but I think with some work it could be a good example of the style, better luck next time guys.

Purchased as a single at the LCBO. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass.

A- Opens well and pours a high white head that lingers for a bit which is surprising for an IPA. Clean and dark gold almost brown color

S- Lots of hops here. Dry hopped well. A ton of malt

T- Very good. Has more than enough hops for an IPA. Lots of body with the malt and sugar content.

M- Good and dry while creamy. Nice brew all around

O- Very good beer. Good for an IPA no matter which country it comes from. Will buy again.

Food Pairing

This wonderful IPA went well with....... BBQ chicken with a touch of BBQ sauce made from ketchup, brown sugar and molasses.

Dark orange, nice creamy off-white head.
Smell of citrus hop, caramel and heavy toasted biscuits, plenty of floral notes with a sweet honey-like side to it, faint peach, and also a bit of earthiness that doesn't bode well.
A "crowded" start, with big bitter hops and a really strong malty backbone, quite heavy and not that attractive. A really bitter citrus character, like orange and grapefruit devoid of any sweetness, plus a slightly sour lemon zestiness. Toasted biscuits, caramel sweetness just for a short flash, quickly stampeded on by big grassy hops, really bitter and dry in the finish.
Aftertaste mostly of bitter hops and some grapefruit peel. Medium body, medium carbonation. Lingering bitterness, like medicine or perfume stuck down the throat.
Lots of hops in this one, "barely under control", as they say on the label, but not entirely cool. Big single-flavored punch, a pity.

Citra hop all-around. A slight taste of malt. Long bitterness and aroma of orange peel. Loose a lot of flavors after a couple of days in the fridge. Drink fresh

Grapefruit and a little pine from the hops. I was not expecting much but was very pleasantly surprised.

I really don't like the packaging but the beer is good.

Flavors of citrus peel and something interesting, possibly Szechuan peppercorn? I know, I know, but that's what I taste. Hoppy (imagine that). Herbal. Bitter. Astringent. Tannic, really. Remove some sweetness and the carbonation and I'm reminded of cab sauv. Long finish.

Not crazy about it, but good. Hop heads will enjoy.

Was first APA I tried. And I'm still in love with it. For me, it delivers on its name. It's an explosive, complex, evolving taste experience. Citrus (grapefruit), pine, rhubarb, dandelion tones are all there in a transcending fashion.

May not have been a good idea to forget about this brew in the back of my fridge. Not sure when it was bottled since its ?/16/14 for the date. Paid $2.49 for the single at Vintage Estate 2 months ago.

A - Thankfully no sediment floaties so it's newer than 6 months or filtered. Head is just a 1/4 inch but it sticks around forever. Color is an on par light amber brown clear.
S - Smells rather nice mild zesty citrus and lemon hops no hard pine or medicinal bitterness. Malty sweetness seems to be in check.
T - Very harsh bitter hops. Not too palatable really they seem balanced enough but I am not digging the taste. Like floor cleaner very medicinal and soapy. No good.
M - Sort of light to medium on the palate with very harsh lingering bitterness.

Not my thing in the slightest figured it would be terrible ended up being unbearably bitter yet not undrinkable. Would not get again.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 4/3/2014. Pours hazy orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, floral, grass, caramel, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with solid strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, caramel, biscuit, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange zest, pine, floral, grass, caramel, biscuit, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of citrus/pine hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good IPA. Good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

My first try of this Canadian brewer.Pours into a standard pint a clear copper color with a nicely formed creamy half finger white head that left one full and one broken ring of lace as it settled into a frothy mass.A nice shot of pine resin in the nose along with a big caramel base,I like the combination,it's old school left coast to me.A mix of pine and citric hops on the palate with some sugary sweetness underneath with a bit of biscuit and some nice toasted notes.Hey this is the type of IPA I can drink alot of,it's just solid in all facets,a good big hop profile but not over the top in sweetness and/or alcohol.

S - Floral, citrus fruit, malts.

T - Layers of citrus hops, floral, balanced by malts. Good balance and nice bitter mouth feel.

O - Solid offering from Canada. Good I-P - Eh!

I've had this beer multiple times from the bottle, both from the bottle and in a glass.

The beer smells of citrus with the nice bitterness of the hops. A nice citrus taste to start, with a nice (but not overly) bitter finish. The beer has a fairly thin mouthfeel, but that seems to work well for this beer.

The citrus mixes with the bitterness nicely and makes it a very easy drinking IPA - one of my favourites.

The bottle art is also unique and cool, if you care about that kind of stuff. I personally do.

I've just noticed this beer in NE recently, and it was only $7 for a 22oz (little steep!).
Comparing to other IPAs, a very subtle floral, hoppy, citrus nose. Initial wonderful hoppy
mouth feel, but the beauty of this one is how sweet and smooth the finish is. Ths is not an over-the-top hoppy bitter IPA, but matched and well balanced beer. I would definitely buy this beer again.
