A - Hmm. Little sticky note on my bottle that says 10.5% - typo or weakened some? Anyway, pours a dark, clear red with a solid, quite stick head.

S - Nose is sweet, citrus/grapefruit, apple and caramel. A bit candy-like.

T - Sweet. A bit too much maybe, and bitter. A bit too much of that as well (160IBUs it says...) Fresh apple cider, booze, old white wine. I'm thinking a bit of oxidation here.

M - Heavy, boozy body with heaps of carbonation.

D - This is gonna be hard to finish. Strong and poorly balanced.

Man was I dissapointed in this beer...

I was sooo hoping that the magic of many of their other beers was incorporated in the the Super Collider Double IPA...

This beer tastes boozie....is strong...smells strong is went flat in my glass far too quickly. It wasnt the worst beer i have ever had but I think my expecatations were too high after the great impression Atomic IPA had on me.

It is not that this is a bad beer but I think for the $ 10.00 / bottle you can find much better beers to enjoy.

clear dark red/brown colour. inch of bubbly/foamy off-white head - nice lacing.

smell is nice - hoppy, citrusy, with a bit of fruit, and caramel.

taste is pretty bad - pretty much just bitter and alcoholic - couldn't taste all that much else.

couldn't finish the glass i poured let alone the bottle. pretty big let down from a brewery that i usually enjoy.

Bought a few of these and split one with friends earlier but settling down for a review solo. Bottled August 16.

A - Pours dark copper with a bit of haze and strong carbonation. One finger of light brown head. Head is creamy and fluffy. Some wall-ish lacing and a good retention of half a finger.

S - A good citrusy punch. A little boozy citrus and a caramelly malt note.

T - Boozy. Boozy pineappley citrus. Not all that much depth.

M - Full body, medium carbonation, a boozy and slightly bitter finish.

O/D - Too boozy. Obviously not that fresh, but still, the booze element could have been masked better. Not alot of balance or malt backbone, and the hop profile doesn't seem that strong. Too bad it took so damn long for this to get out, I feel like it would be better fresh.

Pours an auburn with tan foam head. Nose is caramel malts, brown sugar and booze. Taste is similar, rye wheat, sugar, malts, heavy booziness. Mouthfeel is medium heavy.
Overall, a let down from FM. No hop presence, terrible example of a IIPA. On the other hand, not a bad barleywine. Too bad they didn't predict the LCBOs tyical warehouse holdups and just label this a barleywine. Might of been a better reception

Great label. Its white foil top gives hint at and helps to justify its higher price.

This has to be the darkest DIPA I've had to date. Its body is a rich caramel amber; mostly clear with a touch of haze. A finger's worth of creamy egg shell head is yeilded after a generous pour, displaying good retention taking into consideration the high ABV. Dots of slippery lace coat to the sides of the glass.

Hugely malt forward is the nose. Thick and fresh toasted malts, heaps of caramel and brown sugar and another kick of sweet malty goodness is all caked on top of an unobtrusive earthy, light grassy hop character. Herbaceous comes to mind. The 12.4% alcohol content is well integrated into the rest of the beer, furthering the sweetness of the malt if nothing else. The hops stand next to no chance in this malt bomb of a DIPA. If I didn't get this fresh from the brewery, I'd be seriously doubting this was a fresh bottle.

The bitterness is more assertive in the taste than I had expected from the nose, but it's not enough to change me giving this the title of a malt bomb. The earthy and raw hop character is laced with notes of pine, centering itself mostly in the middle and back of the palate. There's not a lot of bite to the bitterness but it does make its way past the finish where the hops become dry, soft, and reach the peak of their earthiness. The malt character, without much effort, runs equal if not greater to the hop presence. Thick, rich, fresh, and syrupy are all words that come to mind. The malt sweetness is present from beginning to end with it being most noticeable in the finish. I really do love the fresh and sweet malt character in this beer; for the style however, it's not what I'm interested in. This does get points for how well they hid the alcohol.

For me, where this DIPA comes through is in the mouthfeel. Rich, soft and creamy with no alcohol bite. Full bodied, mostly thanks to its sweet richness, imparted by the heavy malt presence.

This marks the first big Ontario crafted DIPA I've had, and I'm sad to say that it didn't meet my expectations. At 12.4% with 160 IBU's written clearly on the label, I was expecting a huge, incredibly hoppy and bitter DIPA and, for a fresh bottle, this was the most malt forward DIPA I've had to date. In terms of offerings at the LCBO, I'd say Flying Monkeys is the brewery in Ontario right now that is pushing the limits of craft brewing and I give kudos to their effort in brewing this. I'm still waiting for the hop monster that tears the enamel off of your teeth and places in BA's top 100 that I can proudly say came from Ontario.

Pours a reddish mahogany topped by a light foamy head. Retains well and laces okay.

Caramel and citrus dominate the subdued aroma along with some mildly off-putting notes that I can't quite pin down.

Tastes biscuity and malty with a warming piney bitterness in the finish. Bitterness lingers in the aftertaste and it's warming in the chest. Hops add bitterness more than flavour, but there's some citrusy notes and floralness (florality?--you know what I mean) to be found. It doesn't really have much character or depth or anything that makes me want to drink more than one.

Mouthfeel is light considering how malty this is. Thin. Not great.

This is kind of a clumsy attempt at the style for me. Not terrible, but somewhat inelegant and not what I look for in a DIPA.

Poured a dark reddish brown, with a mild offwhite head and some light lacing. Nose has some rich sweet malts, light grapefruit notes and some some general citrus character. Malt overpowers this. Taste has a bunch of alcohol, floor cleaner, metal and rich malt character. Weird combination of flavours, and almost cloyingly sweet without a ton hop character. Heavy, sticky and sweet mouthfeel that doesn't exactly work. Sampling this was enough, and I'll hold my money back from this one. Too malty and not enough hop flavour/balance to make this worthwhile. FM has certainly done better before.

The body is a dark amber, bordering on ruby. Lots of visible sediment. A decent cover of cream white head fades to a thin mist, leaving no lacing.

Lots of sweet caramel malt on the nose. Juicy citrus and tropical fruit (pineapple, guava, grapefruit) with candy sugar. This could be a hoppy barley wine with all this malty sweetness.

IBUs are fairly high but most of the hop character has faded. There isn't a bottle date so it's hard to know how long this sat on the shelf. Malty but still with not enough sweetness to back up the biting bitterness. The bitterness seems to coat the tongue with a dusty chemical taste; not pleasant. Alcohol is decently hidden for 12.4%, possibly hiding among the chemical-like aftertaste. No real complexity, just earthy toasted malt with high IBUs and some warming alcohol.

Decent medium body with a slight viscosity and light carbonation.

I'd try this again if it was guaranteed to be fresh but wouldn't call it one to age or purchase when the bottling date is questionable. I can't say I enjoyed this much.

Finally got a hold of a much anticipated bottle of this beer. Poured in to Duvel tulip.

A - Medium to dark ruby colour with half a finger of cream coloured head. Looks like a barleywine.

S - Sweet caramel malts and a good hop bitterness up front; seemingly balanced. Some citrus, pine and toffee notes are evident as well.

T - A noticeable alcohol burn in in the initial sip that somewhat calms down after a while but remains noticeable throughout the glass. A good hop bitterness is evident but somewhat overpowered by the alcohol bite. A lot of malt sweetness too - caramel, toffee and sticky candy. A larger hop presence would be nice.

M - Medium body, light to moderate carbonation.

O - This was an interesting beer. I really wanted to love this one but was let down by it. The alcohol burn was just too overpowering and the hop presence wasn't what it needed to be. In fairness to FM on this one, the fact that the LCBO held this beer up in lab testing for 5-6 weeks, really hurt this one. That said, what this beer needs most is the alcohol bite to settle down, which will happen in the cellar but doing so will kill the hops even more. This recipe needs some tinkering. I couldn't even get through the bomber.

Pours a rather dark amber colour, finger's worth of dense foamy off-white head. Decent retention and lacing.

The aroma's not knocking me over with hops, but is instead full of a fruitiness, bready/caramel malt, and a hint of booze. At first whiff, comes across as more of a barleywine than DIPA.

The taste is hoppy/bitter, but again dominated by the malt component. Big, sweet, and boozy. Some faint citrus flavour at first, then the bready/toffee sweetness kicks in, with the boozy warmth and harsh piney bitterness combining in the finish.

Full-bodied, a bit on the syrupy side, average carbonation.

A below average DIPA in its present state, I imagine that sitting in the LCBO warehouse for weeks and weeks did this beer no favours. It does come across as a decent American barleywine, however, and I still enjoyed working my way through the bomber. It's great to see Ontario brewers brewing bigger styles and making them available across the province. I would love to give FM a second shot with a fresher bottle and perhaps tweaked recipe.

Super Collider is not exactly 'dark matter' nor does it have a head as expansive as the universe. In fact, it looks relatively flat, with a bit of toothpaste white trim that comes apart like stringed cheese. And despite a general murkiness, its brownish body cedes plenty of pecan-colored highlighting. A big contrast to the vibrant label.

To be brutally honest, my first sniff of Super Collider reminded me of some failed homebrewing experiments. The smell of wet, dead leaves and rank citrus is one that I recognize as hoppy, but not the most desirable brand of hoppy. The bouquet is a hot mess of sugary, not entirely fermented malts that smells a bit like cheap brandy with added hops.

For the time being, while the beer is cold and near full, I'm glad to have a front row seat on this train wreck. There's enough leafy Centennial hop bitterness and candied, acidic-sweet citrus to make it well worth drinking. I have a feeling, however, that that honeymoon will end once the alcohol starts to kick in. (Note: the beer ends up holding itself together alright, but it's just not that palatable. It tastes like something distilled from pine sol.)

Flavour specifics include some big honey and biscuit malt as well as some grassy, flowery hops. That description, however, does not indicate just how 'rough' and 'dirty' the beer drinks. Age will help nothing. This beer is like the towering, tattooed, long-bearded leader of a biker gang: rougher than a rose patch. Think Chino or San Quentin.

In the end, the urge to experiment proved more captivating than reason for this brewery. The people in Ontario wanted something bold with big cojones that could kick them in the butt - this is the beer that will leave them impressed… not favorably impressed mind you, but impressed. This failure with hops proves once and for all that it's not the tool that matters, but how you use it. This is a beer that some people might not drink on a bet.

Pours dark amber. The head is not enormous but lasts forever and leaves lots of lace patches on the glass. The aroma is malty and estery with a piney hop characteristic. Pineapple and diacetyl notes also show. The taste is hoppy while also sweetish and buttery like the nose. Alcohol heat is pretty prominent throughout for 10.5% (according to the LCBO). This is a pretty full bodied beer. The finish is bitter with lots of medicenal alcohol heat.

A DIPA with flavor flaws and a very immodest alcohol presence. I'd pass if offered agian.

Taste malty with a not so great hop astringency that feels like eating orange pith. May have left this too long in the cellar.
Mouthfeel is real nice, thick chewy with a nice carbonation
Overall I think this beer would have been much nice fresher bulbs is life.

big props to my BA in crime andrenaline for including this in his latest shipment
A - lightly hazy deep cedar brown, one finger of tan head retained at a thin covering
S - butterscotch, some herbal earthiness, along with a light boozy aroma, really not much on the nose
T - unique hop mix of perfume and oily resin, some caramel and woody hints, and hints of alcohol
M - medium body with low carbonation, maybe even a little flat, it has some bitterness but 100 IBU it is definitely not
O - definitely a unique dipa with that perfume and resin flavour mix, although it is nothing mind blowing it is always nice to try a pale that's on the fringes of the traditional style, worth a try

Bottled August 16, 2011.

Beer is a dark amber-toffee colour. Large off-white head. Decent retention.

Smell is not as full of hops as one would expect. Bready malt, prune, plum and other dark fruit. Brown sugar. Some pine in the background. Smells much more like a barleywine than a DIPA.

Lots of bitterness in the taste. A bit piney. Like the nose, malt is strongly present with bready flavours, but it is not sweet. Finish is bitter. Alcohol is strong and noticeable. The dark fruit flavours from the nose are muted. Disappointingly average. Not a terribly enjoyable beer.

Beer has moderate to high carbonation, very heavy. Feels a bit sludgy and sticky.

This beer needs some work. Has some good qualities but overall is not particularly good.

Deep ruby/amber colour, light off white head that retains at the edge of the glass, a few spots of lace. Smell is malty and lightly boozy, pine scents are there but medicinal and somewhat resemble a pine scented cleaner, hoppy with some citrus. Taste is malty with pine and citrus, big hop profile, alcohol, citrus in the finish as well as warm alcohol heat. Medium carbonation, full body, syrupy at points. Not bad, but I expected a little more from this, still a decent DIPA though.

Bottle from the brewery. Bomber with a great label. A thin ring of white head on light brown body. Hoppy aromas. A melange of hops, medicinal, with a tad of metallic in the finish. 120 IBU and I believe it. Unbalanced bitter, though the malting is an afterthought. Not well integrated. Drinkable, I suppose up to the style, but not the best example of it.Average mouthfeel.

650 ml bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a clear dark amber/brown with a finger of beige head, not much retention, a little lacing.

S: Smells of citrus hops, booze, rotten fruit and yes, perhaps some floor cleaner.

T: Taste is malty, boozy, 160 IBU? Maybe the lcbo should have put a sticker marking that down too. This is definitely in barleywine territory. It's actually not bad but a DIPA it ain't.

M: Reasonably full bodied mouthfeel with a nice fine and subdued carbonation.

D: Actually, overall I don't mind this. The smell is terrible but for 10% ABV, it's pretty drinkable.

this was cellared for just under a year.

look ~ a bit darker that other D/IIPAs; it pours a reddish copper colour. clarity is very good. the head was average: it rose up about a finger or two and was off-white, fell fairly quickly to a film with no lacing.

smell ~ I get a lot more malt on the nose than I would have expected from the style. malt was fairly rich with mostly caramel and kettle-caramel flavours
. This is balanced by a hop aroma that seemed to be mostly piney. while I really like piney hops, there was a little less complexity here .

taste ~ the flavor was definitely strong and complex, but again leaned a little more to the caramel-malty than I would have expected. The prominent caramel flavour was a bit unwelcome and took too much balance. there is a bit of fruit with the aftertaste that brings out both piney and grapefruit. Bitterness was much higher than the flavour of hops. There is a long aftertaste, but it was a bit too harsh.

feel ~ good body and carbonation, but the stronger malt still sweetened up the ending more than I would have liked. There was a good helping of bitterness, but not as much hop flavor as I'd like into the ending.

Decent. It has a much richer malt character than I'd usually expect. Most of my problems came from it's deviance from the D/IIPA guidelines. Taste-wise, it worked. I'd really classify it as more barley wine territory, though.

On tap at Gambrinus Bistro & Cafe in London, ON. Very fresh pint served in proper branded glassware.

Pours a dark copper hue with ruby edges, two fingers of beige froth, and strands of stringy lacing on the pilsner glass.

Smell is big bready, doughy, and biscuity notes, similar to an altbier, with a little bit of stone fruit and bubblegum coming through. Surprisingly malt-forward aroma.

Taste is caramel and deep bready malts with piney-citric hops, lots of earthiness, and an abrasive, aspirin-like bitterness. Alcohol warms the insides after the first few sips but doesn't register on the palate. Rather strangely, some diacetyl was evident on the cough (though not enough to be distracting).

Mouthfeel is creamy, smooth, and fuller than medium bodied with a drying bitter finish and a little heat in the throat.

Overall, Super Collider is a good but not great DIPA that could use some work. For some reason I enjoyed it more out of the bottle at the Golden Tap Awards. Since I know the brewers are perfectionists who will undoubtedly tweak the recipe and make it better, my advice would be to turn down the alcohol a few notches (say 3%), aim for a leaner malt bill, and use more flavour and aroma hops. I'm confident that Peter, Adil, and Co. will revisit this brew and transform it into another Flying Monkeys hit (maybe under a different name, who knows). In the meantime I'll be grabbing bottles from the 'BO to see if I like them as much as the ones that debuted at the GTAs, and I'll update my review then.

Bottle from the brewery - thanks 93!

Poured in to my trusty Flying Monkeys nonic. Dark amber-chestnut, pretty dark in colour. Leaves a nice frothy head, good lacing. Not bad.

Nose is quite malty and boozy, with some citrus and resin kicking around. Caramel and toffee, a bit of fruit. My first reaction was "...barleywine?" Certainly not what I expected in a DIPA, but there you go.

Again, the taste isn't quite what I expected. It's a boozy affair, to be certain, with a good smattering of hop and resin flavors, but damn is this sucker malty. Very thick, quite sweet actually. A hoppy barleywine, as it were. I enjoy these sorts of flavors, so I still marked it well, but this wasn't the hoppy experience I was hoping for.

Thick bodied, but there's enough carbonation to keep this interesting and prevent a cloying sensation.

I agree with a few previous posters - reduce the ABV slightly, thin out the malt character and hop it up old school. It's got potential, and I am enjoying it, but it needs a bit of work.

Deep red-brown colour, light beige head forms thin rings of lace. Citrus, floral, and pine aroma accompanied by a big whiff of booze. Light earthy scent hidden deep underneath everything else. Tangerine flavour is solid, but not over-the-top in the way I expect the citrus/tropical American hop profile to be in this style. Toast and caramel malt profile provides a flimsy backbone. Finish is bitter and lingering, but not challenging. I hoped and expected for a powerful and challenging bitterness, but this is pretty easy to handle in that respect. It's also quite boozy. It's not undrinkably so, but it's boozy enough to detract from it. In terms of mouthfeel, it does leave a nice oily, resiny feeling on the the roof of the mouth, but it could use a little more heft. I'm not saying that this DIPA should be barley wine malty, just that I would like it with a pinch more heft, and that a little more residual sugar might help it in that regard. It also might help balance the alcohol. Overall, I think this beer is a good start. Knowing the Flying Monkeys history of releasing works in progress, I'm sure this will be tweaked and come back even better next year. I await its return.

A: Reddish amber colour with a respectable two-finger creamy head with a dirty beige hue. Decent retention as the blanket sticks around for a little while. Noticeable lacing.

S: Pine, candied fruit (fruitcake style), baked bread, molasses/caramel, grapefruit, and tropical qualities. Appealing but I find this a little subdued aroma wise with some digging required.

T: Earthy pine hops, which transitions to the malty bread-like qualities. A strange biting and slightly askew wave of grain follows this. Other qualities detected in the aroma are hard to pick up in the taste. Alcohol quite noticeable (albeit probably hard to hide at 12.4%). Decent overall taste but I feel that some flavours are missing, and that this could be balanced better.

M: Medium body with a moderate carbonation, which tastes about right for the style. Nice and oily with a slightly resiny texture.

D: Had high expectations for this given my excellent experiences with all other FMCB products, however, this unfortunately fell a bit short. Hopefully they can work out the kinks in this. Reminds me of a lesser functioning version of Vermonster.

650ml Bottle

Appearance – Mostly clear copper colour with an average size fizzy beige coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation visible and there is a fair amount of lacing. The head lasted for around 4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, caramel, hops, booze

Taste & Mouth - The beer has an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, caramel, and some citrus notes. There isn't as much hop taste as I expected and I can really pick up on the booze. It ends with a malty sweet aftertaste with only a little bit of lingering hop bitterness.

Overall – As everyone else has said, I'm sure this would have been better fresh. It's basically a barley wine. For the 8.95 price tag I would have rather just had 4 bottles of their smashbomb IPA.
