First introduced in 1836.

Strong beers were banned in Sweden 1923-1956.

The 5.5 % original recipe was re-introduced in 1985 as a beer fermented with both top and bottom yeast.

In 1993, the yeast was changed to a single bottom-fermenting strain.

In 2009, the label design and name was changed from "Carnegie Stark-Porter" to "Carnegie Porter".

I never had a Sweedish beer before so I almost balked at picking this one up when I saw the $5.19 price tag for a single 16.9 oz bottle, plus the beer was dated 2001 and this was already Sept. of 2006, so I didn't know how well it had held up and wondered why no one was buying it.

It poured a dark brown color and left just a 1 finger creamy tan head that soon disappeared to just a tan ring on top producing just a minimal of lacing. Nothing exceptional about the pour or appearance.

The smell however was a different story. This beer had an incredibly good aroma. It was an intoxicating mix of roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. It smelled absolutely delicious.

The taste was more of the same. It had a creamy mouthfeel due in part to the low carbonation and tasted like creamy coffee layered with chocolate and roasted malts. There was no bitterness to it at all. Many beers with coffee tastes have a bitter coffee flavor to them and some chocolate flavors are more like bittersweet dark chocolate than sweet chocoalte, but this beer is all mild roasted coffee and sweet milk chocolate, yet it is a pleasant subtle sweetness rather than sugary sweet and I absolutely loved it. Like drinking a cold chocolate flavored coffee.
There was a trace of alcohol in the aftertaste, but it wasn't anyhting that detracted from the overall experience.

At just 5.5% abv I could drink these all night, and when a beer is this good, you don't mind spending $5.19 a bottle.

A - Dark brown, nearly black brew, opaque with brown highlights, and a light tan head that reduces to a ring, with mild lacing.

S - Delicious nose of malts and burnt sugars, molasses, with a slight boozy character.

T - Delivers on the nose, but in a quiet, restrained manner. The flavor showcases caramelized sugar and molasses, with a slight hint of smokiness. Very little bitterness.

M - Smooth and surprising light on the tongue, with a mild acidity.

O - The smells from this beer are robust, and while the beer is more restrained when it hits the palate, the overall result is a top-notch porter.

From a 330 ml bottle (best by October 10, 2015) into a snifter.

A-The beer is a nice-looking ebony brown/black color with about one finger of tan head. I get some lacing on the glass as I drink, but the head retention is on the shorter side.

S-The aroma is simple at first, but reveals more complexity with each new sniff. I get some roasted flavors, but overall bitterness and smokiness are moderate. The malts are earthy with aromas of tobacco, prunes, and molasses. There is some caramel sweetness and dark fruit, too.

T-The taste is not quite as intriguing as the smell, but is pleasant nonetheless. There is just a bit of acrid, smokey bite, as well as caramel, molasses, earthy oak, and a bit of rye bread crust. Bitterness is pretty low for the style, but the beer packs a little touch of pleasant, coffee-like acidity.

M-The feel is medium in heft with a chunky carbonation that is below average in volume.

O-This is a very nice beer. The aroma, in particular, just keeps revealing new flavors with each sniff and each new flavor just seems to fold into the rest in a really pleasing package. The taste is a bit simpler and the mouth is a touch lighter than I would like, but I would happily drink more of this.

Bottle 2013, Klass III. Pours black with small, creamy, beige head and nice lacing. Aroma is of floral hops, toasted malt, dark fruit and coffee. Body is full and slightly crisp. Taste is of toasted malt, coffee, vanilla, brown sugar, dark fruit and floral hops. Finish is long and bittersweet. Very nice porter.

Pours a dark brown color with ruby edges. The beige head was less than full finger and it dissipated down to a thin film rather quickly. The nose had mild roasty notes. The flavor is a well balanced combination of dry roast and hop bitterness. The hop presence appears to be slightly above the norm for the style, but it makes for a terrific finish alongside the dryness of the roast profile.

This offering is hard to rate in comparison with other Baltics. It seems to be more in the vein of a classic Baltic while most contemporary beers of the style are heavier in body and roasted malt. I'll just say that this is a unique and very tasty offering.
