Notes/Commercial Description:
First introduced in 1836.

Strong beers were banned in Sweden 1923-1956.

The 5.5 % original recipe was re-introduced in 1985 as a beer fermented with both top and bottom yeast.

In 1993, the yeast was changed to a single bottom-fermenting strain.

In 2009, the label design and name was changed from "Carnegie Stark-Porter" to "Carnegie Porter".

Appearance - dark brown body with tan head

Smell - cocoa powder, chocolate, molasses, toffee

Taste - chocolate, molasses, cocoa, toffee, hint of tobacco on the end

Mouthfeel - medium bodied, medium carbonation, slight sweetness upfront, tobacco on the finish, thinner than other examples within the style

Overall - good beer that I've been waiting a while to try for a while, tasty beer at 5.5% ABV

price point - $3.50/11.2 oz single

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. Can't decipher the best before date, but the last two numbers are "15" so I'm going to assume it's good until 2015.

A- Pours a mostly opaque black color with a 1/4 inch tan head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and some sparse wisps of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a thin, jagged ring behind.

S- Milk chocolate aroma with some medium dark roast. Notes of vanilla and a touch of booze.

T- Straightforward porter flavor with more medium dark roast accompanied by notes of coffee, more vanilla and dark bread. Mild bitterness rounds things out making for a tasty drink.

M- Semi-creamy with medium-low carbonation and a full body.

O- A porter by the numbers but executed so well. Very drinkable as well as very flavorful. Now I see what all the hubbub's about.

Bottle from rlgk, thanks Ronny!

Perfect beige head, brown-black color.

Aromas of bready, roasted malts and coffee.

Rich malts, going along with toffee, earthy notes, hints of chocolate, coffee and smoke. Sweet malts melt together with chocolate, supported by a perfect fitting carbonation, resulting in a smoky, warm finish. Malt goes through different stages on the palate, mingles up with coffee and later on chocolate, but keeps being the most defining ingredient of this beer the whole time. Oily, smooth mouthfeel, with a bitter finish.

2004 vintage in my I Believe snifter. Still has a surprising carbonation herringbone head falls back quickly but clings softly to the side of the glass. All the rough edges have been smoothed of this, leaving polished obsidian. Madagascar vanilla, cocoa and the hint of black currant roll past. Evaporating into a dry licorice finish. A dark pleasure!
