Strong beers were banned in Sweden 1923-1956.

The 5.5 % original recipe was re-introduced in 1985 as a beer fermented with both top and bottom yeast.

In 1993, the yeast was changed to a single bottom-fermenting strain.

In 2009, the label design and name was changed from "Carnegie Stark-Porter" to "Carnegie Porter".

Big thanks to Masterski for providing this in a recent trade. Alex is a good man.

Very creamy 2+ finger of beige head sits atop this beer. It slowly collapses but takes it's time and shows excellent retention. The beer is almost as black as an Imperial Stout. Help to a bright light you get some slight light coming through. Nice sheets of lacing.

Aroma is malty, caramel and a whiff of alcohol which is strange since it's only 5.5%.

Roasted malt and chocolate notes dominate here. A slight molasses flavor as well. Somewhat musty as well. Perhaps a little licorice here.

Fairly thick bodied and dry on your tongue. A slight dry or powder like feeling on your tongue. A little abv heat which again is strange at 5.5%.

The end of the flavor is slightly abrupt which cuts down on the drinkability for me. It's good and you can't say it's watery, but still the flavor ends quickly. (883 characters)

A: Pours a thick black with a nice one cm head.

S: There isn't much nose on this one, but a bit of roasted malts.

T: A dark roasted flavour, with a slight bit of hops. This beer is balanced. The malts, hops, and undertones are nice. It's quite nice because of the balance.

M: Nice mouthfeel.

Poured from a 500ml bottle dated 2006 - so fresh as they come, and opened just as the snow came drifting down on northern Sweden. The perfect night for a porter me thinks.

Appearance: The best thing about this beer. Jet black with a thick, creamy tan head with some spotting. If this was a picture I'd frame it.

Smell: Slightly vague nose, with soft fuit sweetness, vanilla and a whiff of chocolate

Taste: Mild choc/coffee as you'd expect. A little rust, caramel and raisins, but TBH not a lot of anything. Almost non-existant hops.

Mouthfeel: The lack of hops means this porter gives up in the mouth a little too early for my liking. Initial sweetness (refined white sugar sweetness that's quite dominant and a little sickly).

Drinkability: A little to osweet and one-dimensional for me. Lacking any memorable burnt/brown sugar and bitter/coffee characteristics that I normally associate with a great porter, and the candy sugar kick throws the taste out of balance. Having said that it was a good beer to drink while watching the snow come down. (1,063 characters)

I found this in the reduced price bend. It's ironic that I was looking for DuckRabbit Baltic Porter. I see this is the same style, awesome.

Great head that creates a full lacing effect while it last.

The alcohol isn't noticeable so it is easier to drink I think.
Has a nice toasty taste to it, hey I finally taste the caramel that everyone has mention in other post. It's rich concentrated taste.

This is a real easy drinking porter. I am surprise that I saw it in the reduce basket. I bought two of them so I will definitely enjoy the other one too. (564 characters)

A - Dark Cola black with red highlights. Small light beige head dissipated but laced the edge.

S - Caramel and chocolate.

T - Toffee, a little smoke. Pretty balance between sweet and dry from beginning to end. Not much of a linger.

M - Would have liked a little more carbonation. Some what thin.

O - I was really looking forward to this based on its reviews and recommendations. It's pretty solid, but not my A+ Baltic porter. I'd drink it if offered, but probably won't seek it out. (490 characters)

Appearance – Very dark in color with a nice, tanned head that showed decent retention and left a little lacing.

Smell – This aroma is nice. There’s some good coffee and chocolate notes to go along with the classic roasted malts. I can also pick up small traces of cocoa, anise, molasses, and some kind of sugar (maybe pure cane).

Taste – The smaller notes from the nose came out bigger at the taste. The chocolate and anise were prominent, but the molasses all but disappeared. This is not a super-dark porter; it’s more of a lighter one in the classic sense.

Mouthfeel – This was medium-bodied. I thought the mouthfeel was the weak point of the porter. The flavors were kind of clumsy and could maybe benefit from cellaring.

Drinkability – This went great with my Stoned Bratwurst and sauerkraut.

Comments – I had the 2001 vintage. Even though it is going on three years old I would recommend cellaring this for another three. I’m not a big “cellaring” fan but I think the flavors here just need some more time to get to know each other. (1,064 characters)

Poured from bottle into pint glass

Appearance: A dark black color, quarter inch head with no lacing. Rapidly diminished so not a very good retention.

Smell: Not a strong smell, typical bitterness of a dark porter.

Mouthfeel: Simple frothy carbonation. Very smooth.

Taste: A good porter with light coffee and strong malt taste.

Stark-Porter 2006 Vintage with a best by date of January 2016.

Very dark brown that appears black in the glass. One inch of head forms but quickly settles to a thin cap. Moderate amount of spotty lacing is left on the glass.

Has that European lager aroma going on. As the beer opens up there comes some added complexity. Subtle hints of chocolate, dark malt, coffee, and the slightest touch of cherries.

The taste is a little more impressive. Slightly bitter chocolate, a little roasted malt, and a faint fruitiness melds nicely into a good flavor. There is also some earthiness. Not as bigged flavored as American brewers intrepertation of the style but more of a traditional beer. I am also surprised by the decade long aging ability. I cannot see aging helping this beer at all.

The body is not very large. In fact it feels a bit watery. Considering the low ABV, I am not that surprised. Just enough carbonation to give some life to the beer.

As I worked my way through the bottle, I came to appreciate the beer more. Not my favorite Baltic Porter but nice considering its historic significance. (1,103 characters)

Presentation: It’s been a long time since I tried this dark sexy Swedish number, so when I saw a petit 1997 bottle of this one, I fancied taking it for a ride again. This shrunken Scandinavian has a rather striking look despite its rather demure 8.82 fluid ounce sample size.

Appearance: This aged sample has a very, very, very dark black body. Utterly impervious it looks like a glass of tar once the fading tan head completely disappears. The flat look does little to offer any excitement and the absence of any conditioning is derisory. Still, this does have an appeal, like a stripped bare knuckle fighter you get to see this one devoid of any fancy-schmancy pomp and circumstance.

Nose: Fading in strength from fresher samples if my ailing memory serves me well. Dark chocolate, roasted coffee, sweet molasses and smoked charcoal. A soft background has a rich texture but is low to the punch.

Taste: Smoky beginnings, molasses and a light chocolate darkness with a bitter trait. This has mellowed out from earlier offerings with a younger vintage but a rewarding brew nonetheless. Roasted feel remains and a light hint of Smoky Bacon punctuates the lingering finish.

Mouthfeel: Thinning body has a creamy feel despite its low conditioning. The body has a solid depth but tends to wax and wane and it can feel a little depleted at times, but never anything less than above average.

Drinkability: Only had 8.82 fluid ounces – but it was an enjoyable sipper.

Overall: First brewed in 1836, but it seems that at nearly ten years old this one tends to loose all conditioning and starts to thin out, though the complexity remains and the depth of taste still excites. Remains a high quality sipping Baltic Porter but I prefer this one a little younger. (1,816 characters)

2001 vintage with "best before 2010" on label. Pours an opaque, almost pitch black with a tan head that quickly drops into patchy and collar lacing. Aroma of burnt coffee, smoke, licorice, and a hint of chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, creamy, and has a mild peppery bite. Taste is similar to the nose, with burnt coffee, smokiness, licorice, and spicy, dry, bittering hops. Very drinkable, and a nice Porter, but nothing outstanding at this stage. I was surprised by the "best before" date being a several years down the road. This one will probably be much better in a couple of years. (593 characters)

Pitch black with a fluffy, beige head that reduces to a creamy ring around the edge of the glass. Some sediment left in the bottle. Interesting aroma - along with a fresh chocolate grain richness, there is a good amount of toffee, nuts, prune, and port. Dark malt and fruit flavor exhibiting some tartness and a dry roasty edge. Dark fruit, berries, and molasses. Not as rich as many Baltic Porters, but then it is unusually light in alcohol. Medium bodied and pretty clean, but seems to fall a little flat. I'd be interested to see what this would be like properly cellared for a couple more years. (605 characters)

This guy poured a very deep black that you would expect to see with a stout. There was a very small head, even when trying to build a big one with a vigorous pour. The little head that there was quickly left the building. The smell was of a caramel/roasty/nutty mixture that was very interesting and exciting. The taste had a very cabonated twang to it that never went away, however underneath that was a very complex carmel, molasses nutty mixture that was very nice and unexpected along with a thick molasses like mouthfeel, I also figure that there was some lactose in there as well. I wish I knew what the rest of the label says. I would drink seveal of these on a nice cool evening. (687 characters)

Oh yeah! A small head with medium to fine light brown bubbles that quickly fades away. A deep brown color almost black body. It has a very heavy aroma full of hops. Low carbonation with heavy flavor and coffee taste typical of a good dark porter. I found myself taking several sips to make my taste calls. It has a typical dark flavor with no aftertaste. The head is gone now as I complete this report. A very nice brew. (420 characters)

One of the better beers produced in sweden and i've never tried it...untill now....

A: Pitch black. Almost non-existant lace.

S: Cocoa, ripe fruit, roasted malts, rum.

T: wood, vanilla, bourbon, coffee, chocolate.

M: Smooth as silk with a nice burnt aftertaste. Low carbonation.

This is a fine porter that i regret not trying untill now. I think should
age nicely too. Recommended! (386 characters)

Argang 2004.

Poured a deep black hue with a one finger foamy tan head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a soft cocoa aroma with hints of coffee and mild caramel.

The taste consisted of an upfront lactose sweetness that gradually blended with the roasted coffee element The sweetness prevented the flavor from drying out. I was a bit suprised by this.

The mouthfeel was full and chewy, with a bit of an uncomfortable heavy sweetness.

Overall a nice and flavorful porter. Not as dry as I would have hoped however. (549 characters)

Dark brown with a thin head. Smells of chocolate and mildly of molasses. Lightly roasted with sweet malt and more molasses and chocolate. Very mild, but also very compelling. You just want another sip. It almost has a Baltic Porter taste profile, but none of the BP alcohol. (274 characters)

Bottle 2013, Klass III. Pours black with small, creamy, beige head and nice lacing. Aroma is of floral hops, toasted malt, dark fruit and coffee. Body is full and slightly crisp. Taste is of toasted malt, coffee, vanilla, brown sugar, dark fruit and floral hops. Finish is long and bittersweet. Very nice porter. (312 characters)

This beer dates back to 1836, which was a surprise for a Swedish beer.
Deep black color with a thin head with low retention.
Grainy raw malt aroma with clear mocha notes.
Flavor of roasted and toasted malts, dark chocolate and earthy hops. Hints of licorice, raisins and figs.
Very dry aftertaste with a long lasting residual taste of dark malts, cocoa powder and hops.
Full body with low carbonation.
What a beautiful Baltic Porter. If you like dark beers, it is a must. (471 characters)

For some reason, I always put this beer in a head-to-head matchup with Okocim and Sinebrychoff. They're all considered Baltic Porters, but if you look at the ingredients and starting gravities, they're completely different approaches to what is considered the same style.

I find this one to be the least complex of the three. I enjoy this one though; I think it has a number of redeeming qualities. First of all, consider the deep toffee and caramel aroma... it's impressive. Also, the yeast strain they use has a nice balance of dry crispness with fruity esters.

A couple of things I think this beer lacks is substance in body and enough character from the chocolate and patent malts. Perhaps this is different when the beer is tasted fresh? The sample I am using to assess was a bottle that had been aged for almost a year; it would be interesting to see what this beer tastes like at the brewery.

All in all, it's a great beer, but not one of the best Baltic Porters I've had. (989 characters)

Reasonably dark brown color with some accenting around the side - head is thick and pretty full. A smattering of lace, but not much going on.

Pleasant and mildly sweet aromas of fruit and roasted malt. I'm pretty unimpressed with how weak this nose is.

I expected a little more darkly roasted malts and strength of character, but what's there is nice of taste - I just want more of it. Lots of chocolate and more than a little coffee, but the complexity isn't too high.

More fullness is required in the end; for this style I would like a little more malt body and a more fleshed out beer in general. This is easy to drink in the sense that it's light bodied with some interesting flavors, but I'm ready for another beer and if I had any number of alternatives within this style I would take them. (802 characters)

Poured from a one pint .9 fluid oz bottle into a arlsberg Imperial Pint glass.

Appearance- The perfect pour into my Carlsberg imperial pint glass. A nice tan, two and a half finger head with good retention and film formage. The colro was a perfect mix of brown and black.

Smell- A pretty subdued baltic porter. Hints of walnuts, chocolate, and deep roasted malts.

Taste- Even though this is the weakest abv baltic porter I've tried, it was still very good. Starts out as a sweet nutty flavor, but leads into a chocolate chip muffin flavor. This finish is a light, but dark hop flavor profile with soem hnts at fresh ground coffee.

Mouthfeel- Pretty light for such a dark beer. This would a new session beer if it was more readily available at some Illinois bars. (778 characters)

I bought this as a single at Union Jack's on the Manatawny. I drank it in a goblet. This is the 2004 version. It comes in a 16.9 oz. bottle.

Pours an absolutely pitch black with active carbonation visible on the sides of the glass. A nice, two fingered head of beige colored foam forms on top, drops to a good coating and a ring, with very nice lacing.

Aroma is mostly chocolate, with a slight coffee background.
There is also some kind of chalky, metallic smell in there. I think I can detect licorice as well. The metallic aroma becomes a little too much as it warms.

First flavor is sweet chocolate, with a hint of coffee. This tastes much better than it smells. I actually started holding my breath as I sipped. Pretty darn clean for a two year old, small alcohol beer. Licorice is in there, I think, and fruit flavors like very dark rum soaked cherries. Aftertaste is dark, sweet, and mellow.

Mouthfeel is fairly smooth and creamy, with a high level of residual sweetness. Pretty full bodied. Carbonation is low to medium. Finish is smooth and luscious.

If it wasn't for the smell, this would be outstanding. I honestly held my breath for every sip, trying not to ruin the taste. The flavor is really good. And actually, after 15 minutes or so, the smell went away. One I'd have again. I'd just open it and let it breathe for a while. (1,356 characters)

A great Porter from Europe. This beer best characteristic is its smell. Huge wafting musty boldness from this one. Big chocolate maltiness, a little stale, but not a bad stale. Finishes dry on the tongue, powdery chocolate, semi-sweet and bitter.

Europeon Porters, IMO are much more complex then theri American counter-parts. Not as wild, or original, but but more solid. A good beer that comes in a bottle that is too small. (428 characters)

Quite the pour. Ruby hues, not opaque, but pretty close, and with one hell of a brown, rocky, retentive head. The kind of huge bubbles that make you slow down pouring about half the way through because you're not expecting them, and you know they're gonna stick around a while.

Smells like very intense roasted malt. Very bitter with nodes of coffee grounds. Maybe a little old--scents of fruit come through, as well. Nice, though.

Big bitter malt, big black coffee. Burst of alcohol (strange from a 5.5%!) in the middle, more bitter malts and the end, big fruit sweetness lingering. Tastes a tiny bit stale, but the back sez, I'm not kidding, "Best Before May 2014." That kind of hubris can cost you, sonny.

Good beer. Probably even better fresh. If only they included a realistic dating system... (807 characters)

Bottle purchased at Beers of the World in Rochester, NY. '04 vintage.

Pours an inky black, with a small filmy head, less than 1/4 inch, and no lacing.

Smells like sherry, port, chocolate, dark fruits, and roasted malt.

I am dumbfounded that a porter of this low of an ABV could last a decade, but it has. It seems a bit thin, and slightly watery, but there are some really nice flavors here. There's vanilla, chocolate, roasted malt, slight oxidation, sherry, port, and lots of dark fruit flavors. Pretty swell.

This one is fairly light bodied for the Baltic Porter style, but with that, it's still very drinkable, and tasty. There is a very low level of carbonation.

This one was impressive because it lasted so long and remained drinkable- it also helps that it tasted pretty good! (788 characters)
