Notes/Commercial Description:
Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale is the first beer in the world, to our knowledge, made with whole roasted pecans. The pecans are used just like grain and provide a nutty characteristic and a delightful depth to the flavor profile. This beer is very lightly hopped to allow the malty, caramel, and nutty flavors shine through. The color is dark mahogany. Southern Pecan won a Bronze Medal in the 2006 World Beer Cup in the Specialty Beer category.

A red-orange color, it's pretty clear but for the darkness. The head, just slightly off-white, is about half a finger tall with decent retention and small patches of lacing left in moderation on the glass.
Yeast is a little strong, and it's primarily earthy with a toffee note before some nut comes in. I'm surprised there's not more toast, but there is caramel malt and a little biscuit. More sweetness of brown sugar kicks into the middle. It ends with a little graininess and a note of tea leaf that's the strongest indication this beer leans English at all.
While following very closely to the aroma, the flavor is a little drier and offers some notes of cocoa. It doesn't lose depth or get a little thin in taste at the end as it winds up doing in the aroma. I can understand with the different sweet and nutty flavors in this beer why some judges would like it in the undoubtedly thin specialty category in 2006, but was its consideration as an English brown glossed over? It could easily be an American brown.
The dry and powdery aspects build up a little to ease off the strong sweetness in the middle of every sip and makes for a much more pleasurable finish than it seems destined to have in its medium body.

I must say that you have to try the tap if you are going to rate this beer. I had bottled first, and was disappointed. It seemed like another lazy Porter at best. I was reluctant to try it at a Gulfport pizza joint but since it was on tap there, I went for it. It seems to be popular in the area and I wanted to give it proper test. And was I pleased! This beer is so good on tap. The pecan really shines in this nutty ale. Another party at the table said they had had it before and was un-impressed, so I told them my experience. They decided to try it on tap here and they agreed that it was decisively better.
