Notes/Commercial Description:
Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale is the first beer in the world, to our knowledge, made with whole roasted pecans. The pecans are used just like grain and provide a nutty characteristic and a delightful depth to the flavor profile. This beer is very lightly hopped to allow the malty, caramel, and nutty flavors shine through. The color is dark mahogany. Southern Pecan won a Bronze Medal in the 2006 World Beer Cup in the Specialty Beer category.

Poured from the bottle into a beer glass.
A: Pours a medium, translucent brown. The head was about finger's width high when first poured, then quickly retreated down and to the sides. It has a very light tan color to it. The lacing slides back to the drink quickly and uniformly.

S: This beer has a rich caramel aroma to it. The roasted pecan leaves a wonderful aroma. There is also a honey sweetness in the background.

T: The hops impart a very nice bitterness to the beer. The roasted nut tastes come after the initial bitterness, then a slightly sweet honey taste comes in and under that. The finish starts off sweet, and then it turns to bitterness, and lingers for a decent bit.

Mf: It has a light-medium body to it, which is fine considering the ABV. The carbonation is a little on the lighter side, which also works fine for this beer. It is a bit astringent.

Overall: This is a pretty good brown ale. The aromas and tastes of it are very enjoyable; definitely it's high points. The appearance and mouthfeel are pretty usual for a brown ale. I had to let mine stand for a while before I could really separate the scents and taste it was giving off. The only thing that I could detect when it was cold were the caramel on the nose and the hops in the taste. It took a while for it to open up, but it was worth it. I will buy this one again.

Pours a deep amber brownish color with nice clarity. A bit on the reddish side for a brown ale. No head at all present. The nose starts with some brown bread, oatmeal, and light nutty notes. Not sure that I would pick the nuttiness out as pecan, but there is definitely some influence from the adjuncts. Taste is watery with nutty notes and hints of grain. No hops noted in the flavor but some bitterness at the finish makes for an unpleasant finish. Mouthfeel is light and low carbonation. Overall, this beer is not well executed. It tastes like a really light watery beer with some adjunct flavors added. Would not return to this beer.
