Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Todd on 03-26-2005

Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale is the first beer in the world, to our knowledge, made with whole roasted pecans. The pecans are used just like grain and provide a nutty characteristic and a delightful depth to the flavor profile. This beer is very lightly hopped to allow the malty, caramel, and nutty flavors shine through. The color is dark mahogany. Southern Pecan won a Bronze Medal in the 2006 World Beer Cup in the Specialty Beer category.

Appearance: light amber brown in color with a 1" head that slowly falls. Mild lace develops.

Smell: a soft roasted nuttiness rises from the glass.

Taste: caramel, mild nuttiness, some brown sugar, and a bit of breadiness arrives late. Mild bitterness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Light crispness to start, smoother at the finish.

Overall: a pleasant easy drinking nutty brown ale that has a nice balanced flavor.

It was almost like pecan pie, but could have used a tad bit more malt.
Seems pretty underappreciated on here, though I did have it on tap in Mississippi

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a pretty, reddish-amber color, speckled with some reddish high-lights and a quarter of a finger of white head that quickly dissolved into a thin lacing of foam that almost completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Not much in the aroma department, either that or I’m stuffed up. I do get some very faint notes of toasted malt and some brown sugar, but that’s about it.

Taste: Interesting flavors. Some toasted malt up front, followed by some nuttiness and brown sugar-like sweetness. A little weak, though as all these flavors are pretty subtle, with no one flavor taking a lead. Unfortunately, I’m not getting any pronounced pecan flavors, just a little nuttiness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and pretty smooth as there is practically no carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 45.%, there is no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a pretty decent brown ale, possessing good, if subtle, flavors of nuttiness, malt and sweetness, all nicely balanced, but not pronounced. It was certainly worth a try, and I’d certainly drink it again if offered, but I won’t be picking it up again on my own.

Poured into a nonick pint. Consumed seven weeks after bottling.

Appearance: A coppery bronze, with a 2" head.

Aroma: Somewhat malty, somewhat sweet.

Taste: Classic brown ale flavors. Not much pecan flavor, if any.

Mouthfeel: Typical for a brown.

Overall: Not a bad beer. No bitterness. But there's just not enough nutty flavor to market this as a pecan-ish beer.

It was drinkable but I expected much more flavor. Didn't give what the label said. No pecan in smell or taste. Ok but not a stand out in anyway.

Didn't really do much for me. No aroma, tasted like a regular brown ale with just a hint of "pecan"

Pours clear copper with small white head, smells of pecan, malt caramel and yeast, tastes nutty with maltiness and slight hops, average mouthfeel.

Look - Pours a nice dark brown with rapidly vanishing white head. Lacing remains on sides of glass.

Smell - Grass, pecan, caramel, malt, pecan pie

Taste - Nice brown ale taste up front with the pecan on the finish. Finishes very dry, hardly any aftertaste. Wish there was more here.

Feel - Very light and carbonated. Definitely a sessionable beer, especially with the low ABV levels.

Overall - Below what I had hoped for, but not bad at all. I probably wouldn't spend my hard earned money on this, but would gladly drink one anytime.
