Notes/Commercial Description:
Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale is the first beer in the world, to our knowledge, made with whole roasted pecans. The pecans are used just like grain and provide a nutty characteristic and a delightful depth to the flavor profile. This beer is very lightly hopped to allow the malty, caramel, and nutty flavors shine through. The color is dark mahogany. Southern Pecan won a Bronze Medal in the 2006 World Beer Cup in the Specialty Beer category.

Along with this beer one must be in a particular mindset. Sitting on the balcony of a bar overlooking a town square encased by dirt roads with the smell of soft tobacco wafting close by. It's remarkable clear, dark amber syrup is served with zero head that won;t entrap the dust let off by the foot traffic on the streets below. The sweet smells of warm brown sugar and molasses, caramel malts, and a light nutty fruitiness. Mellow and soft on the palate, it's good for sipping or a walloping good night. It's very sweet on the palate at times with richer treacle and molasses being replaced by an all too prominent butterscotch flavor. A slight flavor of pecan thins the taste out on the palate accompanied by watery, dank tasting grains.
Overall, I don't think the sweetness is overpowering, but rather straightforwardly brash. The pecan flavor plays into the novelty, and so does the fact I think it a fitting beer for a Saturday match-up between Ole Miss and Auburn.
