Notes/Commercial Description:
Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale is the first beer in the world, to our knowledge, made with whole roasted pecans. The pecans are used just like grain and provide a nutty characteristic and a delightful depth to the flavor profile. This beer is very lightly hopped to allow the malty, caramel, and nutty flavors shine through. The color is dark mahogany. Southern Pecan won a Bronze Medal in the 2006 World Beer Cup in the Specialty Beer category.

I think it's wise to cover preconceived notions/expectations when reviewing a beer because I think hype can cloud our judgment if we let it. That said, I had never heard of this beer and just saw it at the grocery store. I did, however, expect something decent for 9+ bucks for a sixxer.

Poured into a S.A. glass. Ruby-brown appearance with a full finger head that went away fast, leaving some minor lacing. This looked more like an amber ale than and English brown, but it could still pass for one.

The smell is out of this world! Roasted malts, pecans are present for sure.

The taste followed the nose quite well. Mild and pleasant bitterness upfront followed by a mild sweet pecan middle. This beer finishes clean and crisp. The mouthfeel was almost mint-like in it's cooling effect, but there was no mint flavor to be sure, just the slight cooling sensation. Excellent taste.

I think it's also important to discuss what I would add/omit to/from this beer in beer fantasy land. The body could've been more robust and the head could've lasted a bit longer.

Overall, this was a VERY pleasant surprise. This is easily one of the best low ABV's I have EVER had. I'm partial to English browns and this gets my vote. Instant favorite. Great beer!!!

Comparison/reference: Reminiscent of a lighter-bodied Samuel Smith Nut Brown ale or a Newcastle on tap that has pecans added to it. Highly recommended!

A: Clear dark brown with a thin line of bubbles for a head.

S: A fruity and nutty toasted malt aroma.

T: Sweet toasted malts blend with a nice roasted pecan flavor. There is also a touch of fruity ester in there. Finishes sweet with the roasted pecan flavor lingering.

M: Medium body with lower carbonation and a very smooth feel to it.

O: A nice Brown Ale with a very smooth and rich roasted pecan flavor. I really liked this beer. Nice on a cold night....recommend it.

Pours a nice transparent amber to copper with a foamy off-white head that retains through the duration. Typical brown ale notes with a distinct but balanced/not overpowering nuttiness and pecan sweetness. Not a lot of hops, but it's in balance. This is my first experience with this brewery, and I like it a whole lot. Looking forward to trying more.

I had this on-tap with dinner in Tupelo, Mississippi. This is good stuff. It has the taste of pecans without being a praline/desert beer. I'm really glad the brewer didn't decide to get cute with it. It went well with the crab cakes. I would gladly have a couple more again.

Pours a clear dark reddish brown with a small off-white head. There is no lacing.

Smell is strongly of roasted nuts with a little bit of a sweet smell thrown in. Fairly one dimensional but pleasant.

The taste is very nutty with pecans definitely present. It isn't overpowering but rather compliments the beer nicely. There is a tiny bit of roastiness and a nice bitterness on the finish.

Overall this is a pretty enjoyable, if not simple, beer. There are not many complexities but it is a unique offering and one that should be sought out.
