Notes/Commercial Description:
Jefferson Stout, Lazy Magnolia's original Sweet Potato Cream Stout, is Lazy Magnolia's version of the ideal Southern-Style Stout. Jefferson Stout is brewed with sweet potatoes and lactose (milk sugar). The sweet potatoes provide the background to an impressive taste with added notes of roasted chocolate, coffee and caramel flavors.

Enjoyed out of a 12 oz brown bottle with a hard-to-read bottling date of 06-02-13. Poured into a 16 oz tumbler.

Appearance - Aggressive pour yields a frothy cocoa-colored foam with a mottling of medium sized bubbles amidst effervescent microbubbles. Dissipates over the course of five minutes to a half finger layer of foam. Leaves lacing that creeps back down into the liquid. Body is pitch black, no discernible light getting through, even around the edges.

Smell - The sweet potato is more present than I expected. Aroma is predominantly roasty and bittersweet chocolate, there is a noticeable characteristic of yam and brown sugar. Finishes with some element of coffee beans.

Taste - Again, the sweet potato is present, accompanied by some burnt sugar sweetness and a finish with a hint of dry that appears to come from notes of tree bark and cocoa nibs.

Mouthfeel - A little slimy for my taste, and there is a strange lightness to the body that doesn't sit quite right with the heartier notes I get from smell and taste. Carbonation is light.

Overall, a solid attempt, and different than any other milk stout I've had. Successful when it comes to infusing that sweet potato characteristic without overpowering. But the feel of this one impacts negatively in a way that influences the smell and taste.
