Cracked this out after sitting on it for a couple of months... probably ain't that fresh, but there is no date on the bottle that I can find. Oh well.
A. Small bits of sediment hang around in this dusty copper brew... a bottle conditioned Pale ale? Neat. Head is small and slim, leaves a touch of lace and shows some tenaciousness as it sticks around for the duration.
S. Unusual. Metallic, smells like pennies. And bread. Yeasty bread. There's a toasty caramel malt sweetness and maybe a little musty apricot spice thing that you pick up right before the citrus American hops. The malt bill is odd and reminds me of a Belgian Pale... surely this is a lot more malt-forward than many American Pales these days. Interesting.
T. Sweet bready malt, hints of nuts and a big estery, fruity centerpiece hold this together. There's a buttery, fullness going on here that is nice. A curious fruity sour note helps balance out the malt while citrusy, earthy and mildly spicy hops blend in well and add some needed balance. Finish is dry and sweet -- again, the malt bill here is unorthodox, can't say it's bad, just different and unexpected.
M. The mouthfeel is well-nigh perfect for this sort of thing. Mid-bodied and wet, crisp, gently but adequately carbonated, and a fine dry, fruity-malt finish with just a touch of bitterness. Drinkable in the extreme if you dig the flavor, which I admit is growing on me as I down more of this.
Over-The-Rhine is an unusual offering, but it's quite solid and by the end of my glass I'm rather wishing this was locally available. A unique take on a Pale Ale; this is good beer.
