Enjoyed from the 12 oz bottle in a pint glass. This doppelbock pours a bright brownish red with a super fast disappearing head and little lacing. Nose of brown sugar, raisins, and yeasty dough fresh bread. Flavors are sweet and moderately bread like with a brown sugar and raisin note to the sides and back. A sweet finish, lightly crisp yet coating mouth feel and a dash of light hop bitterness in the back along with a strong alcohol note. Overall a decent bock. Not my favorite of the season thus far, but still solid for the style.

12 oz bottle, poured into a shaker pint at ~45 degrees F.

Appearance: Pours a bright, clear slightly ruddy amber, not unlike how a good Vienna lager looks, and forms a solid finger of pale beige head that swiftly dissipates. Plenty of carbonation is visible clinging to the sides of the glass, as well as rising steadily through the beer. Looks rather more like a bock than a doppelbock, so we shall see how the rest goes.

Smell: Doughy bread with toffee sprinkles, something not unlike leather, and a hint of cooked raisin.

Taste:Definite confirmation of the bread from the aroma, as the taste of fresh-baked bread swells to fill the entire mouth from the first sip. Toffee notes abound through the liquid loaf, as do some earthen and leathery tones. Here and there, hints of cooked raisin and walnut peek through, and the finish is full of alcohol heat.

Mouthfeel: Light and creamy, not quite as sticky as one would expect for a doppelbock.

Overall: Overall, not a bad beer. I'd think it shades more into the bock category than a doppelbock, but it's tasty nonetheless.

I think this beer needs to be re-classified as a bock instead of a dopplebock. I personally would have rated it much higher if that were the case.

Toasted malt and sweet melanoidins dominate the aroma. Floral hop character is subtle. There's a bit of a tangy/metallic note.

Flavor reveals a sweet toasted malt backbone, fairly rich, with toffee notes. Fruity specialty malt notes are subtle, but add depth. Nice example of the style. It's just a touch too sweet.

It's no wonder this won a Silver at GABF, it's really that good. Just like all of their beers, Moerlein doesn't disappoint with this Doppelbock. Earthy, Nutty Malt backbone with a deep brown color.
