Helles, I think not! --too amber, too aromatic, too fruity..but DAMN, this is a good beer!

It tastes like a fabulously delicate, yet flavorful, ale. It has a strong, buttery nose, and plops right on the palette with this truly exquisite winesap apple flavor. It is really good!

After the crunch-and-munch party with your mouth is over, you remember that it is a lager, as it wisps away without any fuss.

Don't let the portrait of the stuffy-old white guy on the cover fool you. This Christian rocks!

But Helles?????????????????????????????????????????

Clear orange-gold with a nice 1/2 inch head on a hard pour. pleasant aroma, a bit of a honey impression. Malts are fairly nutty as appropriate for style, maybe just shy of papery. Low carbonation level but light bodied. I looked for a saaz hop signature, and it is just barely noticeable. I little thin at the finish. I would choose this guy as a drinkable "session" brew and certainly it is better than the Honey Almond Lager.

Appears a rich golden hue with a white sort of thin head and leaves rings of lacing with each sip nice. Aroma has bready sweet malt tone with a mild hint of nuttiness, pretty mild. Flavor delivers with a sweet nutty specialty malt influenced tone not bad but a little sweet but the bitterness comes through to balance somewhat pretty good nothing spectacular here. Mouthfeel is light in body and carbonation is a little harsh on the back of the throat other than that pretty smooth. Drinkability I will pass on this one next time too many better go to and new beers to try to settle for a mediocre shot at a helles.

A deep golden body with an orange-ish cast is capped by a short head of froth white foam that holds fairly well and leaves minor lacing about the glass. The nose is distinctly malty, grainy and a touch sweetish with some grassy and floral hops in the background. The body is also decidedly medium and its very fine carbonation gently caresses the tongue leaving it slightly creamy in the mouth. Subtly sweet, bready, and lightly toasty malt dominates the flavor with accents of floral and spicy hops appearing throughout. It's backed by a firm bitterness that keeps it from becoming sticky and lends to a drying finish, but malty sweetness is the predominant characteristic.

Pours a golden clear liquid with a thin white foamy head, that disappeared very quickly. No lace on the glass at all. Smells simply of malt, with a touch of floral essence. Malty at first followed by some slight hop bitterness that is somewhat flowery and herbal. Light body with a modest amount of carbonation. Overall, not bad, but it didn't really impress me too much either. I guess I am neutral on this one.

Poured into a pint glass from a bottle. Deep golden color that is a little foggy with a nice head though very quick to dissapate. Left some lace on the glass. Has very little to no smell at all. Tastes clean with a medium malt body that is a bit sweet and a touch of hop in the finish. Malt is the dominating flavor here but still balanced enough. Good lager and a good warm weather beer. Purchased a 12 pack of bottles for $9.99. Nothing stands out from the crowd with this but its availability and value makes it a good step up from fizzy yellow land.

A pretty typical flavor profile, with a rather odd hint of vinegar toward the finish. The beer wasn't going bad, it just had a bit of apple cider vinegar lurking in the background. Otherwise, reasonably crisp and drinkable, but not anything that was too impressive.

Appearance- A bronze amber lager with a little head and lace.

Smell- Vague not much of any type of scent but mildly fruity.

Taste- It has an alright flavor but slightly metallic. A little fruity for a lager but still bitter.

Mouthfeel- Full bodied.

Drinkability- Easy to drink and good with a meal.

Dark golden, slightly haved beer, with a nice off white bubbly head. Slightlyy grassy hop aroma and balanced by malts. Semi bitter malty flavour with a very noticable hop "zing" to it, some tea-like tones also. Mouthfeel is maybe a tad on the thin side for style , but leads to a refeshing drink. OK not a great Helles but a good American lager IMO

Clear golden color with great carbonation and a firm creamy ivory head which leaves leaves good lace. A grainy malt and light saaz-ish hop aroma. Grainy malt flavor and slightly sweet. Medium bodied and creamy with a malty finish and malty character all around.

Label states "Brewed to be rich and malty in the Munich-Helles tradition" "Caramunich Malts and Saaz and Hallertau Hops" ... I'd say they did a damn good job ! Suspiciously similar to Crooked River Select Lager ... hmmm ?!?

Huzzah! Christian Moerlein is being brewed back in Cincinnati again! For a regional non-microbrewed beer this is about as good as they come. The taste is malty and grainy which comes out more and more the warmer the beer gets almost as if it's unfiltered. There is a slight hoppy taste residing just behind the malt and it is wonderfully drinkable. I can drink one right after the other... trust me. The first beer in America to be brewed according to the Rheinheitsgebot Law is still the one of the best as far as I'm concerned.

Paid $6.49 for a 6'er...

The appearence is of a golden-orangey body and a light white head that hold some retention and laces a bit, pretty nice. The aroma is pretty solid with hints of malts and fruits, and the smell fades with the head.

The taste is a little weaker than the Helles lagers I am used to but it still works well with light malts, roasts, carbonation and sweetness it fulfills its' job. The mouthfeel is a touch harsh but that is it, good aftertaste. The drinkability deserves a 'good' because that roughly goes with the Helles style, more designated as a session beer.

Final Thought: It's nice to have a solid beer in the 'Nati sold in bottles & kegs.

More exciting than the new phonebooks, less exciting than my child tax credit check - The new CM Sampler packs are here!

I poured this rather roughly into my pint glass to get all of a bare half-finger of head which fizzled down to zilch very quickly. Scant bubble tracing from the bottom. Nice orange color, happy and inviting.

Sniff it quickly after the pour or you'll miss it, like a shooting star. A brief but very nice malt aroma, followed by nothing, nothing at all.

Good malty taste, some nice roasty character and a pleasing sweetness. Average carbonation rounds to a soft finish. Less crispness, but smoother at the end that goes well with the style. Aftertaste is little more than just a toned down version of the taste profile. A great beer for food.

Mouthfeel is very smooth, good solid body. Would fill the tummy well. A little oily, helps retain a nice lingering finish.

Drinkability - Good for when you want a no-brainer that does a no-drainer on your wallet. About a buck a bottle and worth it, I say. Good stuff.

I did not know that this brewery distributed in DC. By the looks of it, this hasn't been brewed in a while either. Oh well, bargain bin tick for 75 cents - not too bad.

Mildly hazy orange with a dense white head that recedes to a ring rather quickly, leaving no lace at all. For a 3+ year old Helles, this is decent. Oxidized pale malt with honey, caramel, no hops at all. Rather boring, I must say. The palate opens dry and rather cracker-like with faded malt character - honey, oxidized malts, dull and lifeless. Light in body with moderate carbonation, this has a dull and drying finish. A bore, this is going down the drain

Pretty good lager. The sweetness and thicker body detracts from the cleanness and crispness that is great about lagers. The appearance is a viscous golden / orange with expected carbonation and retention. Smells quite malty, sweet, and with hints of fruitiness. Fruit flavors are reminescent of over-ripened oranges, apples, peaches, pears, and pineapples. A corn or rice flavor also compounds the sweetness. Body is a little on the heavy side, but not thick. Finish is a little sweet and oily. Not my favorite, but solid.

My first sample of any beer from this brewer, always nice to see a fresh face on the west coast. The select lager was poured into a pilsner glass. It formed an average sized Ivory white head that leaves some ring lacing. Bright, leaning towards amber in the core but still very light and shiney, loaded with fine carbonation.

This is pretty solid off the get go. Nicely balanced between sweet malts and dome drying Czech hops. Mildly spiced middle and a buttery finish lingers around a bit. Hops get better as the brew warms up just slightly, they become more drying and the saaz taste comes out beautifully.

Other than that annoying butter like quality this is a fine lager. Interesting enough to session.

Slightly above average looking lager. Deep golden orangish hues. But a hard pour resulted in a lackluster head of white that left little lace.

Thick malt aromas, with a push of carbonation, some other fruity hard to pinpoint aromas as well.

A buttery, malty, toasty lager. Mouthfeel is light, crisp and refreshing. Hints of white fruits with some citrus notes. A good session beer.

Pours a deep gold color with a white head that fizzles as the session went on. The smell is of a nice berry, a citrus coated grain is present. The yeast has a bit of melon to it. The taste is light with a nice melon beginning, a light grain with a citrus hop. This is a damn fine lager, great to pick up for a ballgame. SIDE NOTE: What is with the little 7oz. mini?

Light golden in color, white head, good lace, head not long lasting.
Smells very bready and taste the same.
Pretty thin and watery mouthfeel, little to no aftertaste.
Boring beer that doesn't have much going for it, Christian Moerlein should have kept to the forge making horse shoes and left brewing to someone else.

Poured a deep gold color with massive slightly off-white puffy head. Modest lacing. Smell is bready and fruity, but nothing special. Taste is slightly sweet with a nice bread-like maltiness. Finished light and refreshing. A nice beer, with an easy drinking style, But not anything great.

I first had this beer in the cocktail lounge at the Terrace Hotel in downtown Cincy during the Midpoint Music Festival. I was impressed by how easy it was to put down 5 or 6 of these bad boys!

Fast forward a few years. I recently picked up a sixer at a liquor store in Covington. I was not as impressed this time around. For a "flagship" beer it is something to be desired. It is a water thin lager with a so-so taste. It reminds me more of bud than sam that is for sure. at $7/sixer it is a steep price even for a Cincinnati classic.
