Pours a brilliant amber with a solid one inch dark cream head that dissipates slowly, leaving thick lacing.

Caramel, nutty, bready malt and a metallic note form the aroma. There's a bit of melanoidin character present. Floral hops emerge as it warms.

The metallic character carries into the flavor profile, beneath a backbone of toasted caramel malt. The finish is slightly sweet and bready, with some floral hop notes.

Body is moderate, with carbonation a touch high. There's a tangy element that I attribute to the metallic aspect.

Overall, a pretty simple brew, malt forward, but with some off flavors and aromas that detract from the experience.

12 Ounce bottle poured into pint glass.

I can't find a age statement on this bottle but I know its not too fresh. Regardless here is my review. It pours a deep golden brown with a one finger khaki head. I must say I like the color. This beer has a very sweet nose on it. The smell reminds me of an amber lager. Not a lot to pick out, I find it hard to find good aroma notes on lagers.

The taste follows the aroma closely, very sweet. A lot sweeter than your typical American lager, but has a lager feel for sure. Lots of carbination in there as well. This is the type of beer you drink all day long. I would really like to try this fresh, the only reason I bought it in April is my store had it on sale for 3.99 a sixer. I imagine this would very nice on tap.

On-tap at Moerlein Lager House, Cincinnati, OH

A: The beer is slightly hazy dark amber in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down leaving a collar around the edge of the glass and some patches of bubbles on the surface.
S: There are aromas of caramel and toasted mats in the nose.
T: The taste is rather malty and has lots of flavors of caramel and toasted malts along with a bit of sweetness and a slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: Although this beer is quite malty, it’s also rather drinkable. It is a good representation of the style.

Always ready to try a Vienna Lager. I know a lot of my fellow BAs hate these things, but I love 'em. This one was poured from a bottle into a Sam Adams signature glass. Pours a nice, clear golden amber color, but unfortunately there is not much head at all (unforgivable for a Vienna Lager). Faint nose with some nice sweet malty tones, toast, and a bit of pepper.

Very traditional Vienna Lager flavor of sweet, clean, toasted malt in front and a nice pleasant spiciness in back. The feel on this one is a bit thin however, and that takes away from the enjoyment. I'm not sure if it's the low carbonation or if the beer is just a tad light in flavor, but I can't help but notice it. The spiciness on the back brings a touch of lemon with it, almost like iced tea. I'm usually not fond of this kind of taste intrusion in a Vienna Lager, but somehow the lighter body of this one makes it rather refreshing.

Like all Vienna Lagers, this one would pair well with lots of foods from chicken to burgers to pasta to pizza. I probably wouldn't buy this again simply because I have good access to Great Lakes Eliot Ness (which I consider something of a standard), but this is not a bad beer. A bit more carbonation and a bit more body to give it some ``chewiness'', and this beer would shine.

Appearance - a rich iced tea amber color, very watery head of large shallow bubbles, fading quickly. Sparse lacing, not much grab to it. Great color to start but the top pulls the rug out.

Aroma - sweet caramel, toasty. Maybe a touch of brown sugar after it sets up.

Taste - toasty sweet malt, a bit like caramelized sugar. Not much hop balance, allowing the sugars to run a bit. A little bite but this stays on the malty, Vienna side. I like.

Mouthfeel - a little glide to the brew, decently smooth and flowing. Low-key carbonation, medium-bodied.

Drinkability - outstanding fireside beer for any season but summer. It reminds me of Boston Lager without the intense noble hop element. Malty, smooth, a tasty VL.
