Pulled from the cask into a goblet, the Wee Heavy is a dark, murky garnet brown with a thick, frothy, 3 finger whitish-tan head, which was slow to subside and left slight lace, really exactly how I like a beer to look.
The aroma is surprisingly mild at first, rich malt, prunes and caramel with a slight booziness, but it gains in strength quite nicely as the head subsides.
The taste, whoa, is this rich and oaky, an incredibly smooth, really toasted malt flavor with a pleasant touch of diactyl butteriness. There no hop aroma or sugar at all, a perfectly slight dry, bitter finish that leaves only the lightest hint on alcohol on the breath. Very nice and deceptively understated, this is by far the best wee-heavy I've ever had, a bit more oomph and it would be perfect.
Theres a slightly thin and watery mouthfeel that I find typical of cask ales, which is amazingly light for such a rich, strong brew. It is really nice to drink this at the appropriate, cellar temperature, and without forced CO2.
Once again, Roots comes through with a heavy hitter who's drinkability is through the roof. So smooth and buttery, pull up to the bar and have a few of these and you'll be drunk before even get up to pee!
Update 11/1/07 - Just had the 1 year old version of this, on C02 though, and it was markedly maltier and more robust. Quite nice, although I preferred the mouthfeel on cask.
