Poured from fridge temp. Pours jet engine oil black. Smell is a lot of mint and chocolate. Not getting much barrel character on the nose. Taste is not the best. I'm getting mint and chocolate, but a metallic taste and quite a bit of bitterness. No barrel is evident. Mouthfeel is nice, but average.

BOTTLE: 330ml format. Brown glass. Branded black pry-off crown cap. Cost was 6.25 euro @ Plan B in Rotterdam. Appears to be a collaboration beer between Hopduvel and De Molen. Simple white & black label; text only in classic De Molen fashion (save for the logos).
Reviewed live as an imperial stout per the label (which calls it an imperial chocolate mint stout). 24.3 Plato. Bottled March 07, 2014. Aged in r(h)um barrels. Served cold into a tulip and allowed to come to temperature over the course of consumption.
HEAD: ~2cm wide. Khaki colour. Slightly creamy. Not really frothy or robust. Leaves no lacing as it recedes, and it recedes quickly, betraying its poor retention (~20 seconds, though that's forgivable given its high ABV).
BODY: Dark brown-black. No yeast particulate/lees sediment is visible within.
It'd be nicer with a darker longer-lasting head, more creaminess, and a darker body - ideally an ink or jet black.
AROMA: Mint. Chocolate malts. I'm not finding any overt rum, but there's some wood barrel, sure. Dark malt sweetness. No hoppy or yeasty aromatics.
Mint dominates. It doesn't really capture a true chocolate mint profile; there isn't enough chocolate, and the two don't seem harmonious.
Aromatic intensity is moderately high; that mint is pungent.
TASTE: Chocolate malt. Coarse cocoa powder. Mint. Alcohol is well disguised. I find no rum really, but there's a blip of damp barrel in the background. No yeast characteristics or overt hop notes. Seems roughly attenuated.
As the aroma suggested, the chocolate isn't robust enough to really round out this ostensible chocolate mint stout. There's also not enough of a robust malt backbone to really make it an enjoyable imperial stout.
Depth of flavour is poor. Flavour duration is above average. Flavour intensity is below average - especially considering the barrel aging. Balance is subpar; this lacks basic cohesion. Not a gestalt whole of a beer to say the least.
TEXTURE: Oddly rough and scratchy on the palate. Almost irritating. I hoped for a cool refreshing minty brew with a creamy softness; that is not what this beer provided. Medium-bodied but a bit thin and weak in terms of its presence on the palate. Imperial stouts demand a much more robust texture.
Lacks a harmony of texture and taste. This mouthfeel fails to elevate the beer as a whole or to accentuate specific notes from the flavour profile.
OVERALL: Another miss from De Molen, in a long string of recent misses. I'm glad I have some company to help me finish this; it's not even a good beer - let alone a world class one. I love the premise (a rum barrel aged chocolate mint stout? Hell yeah!) but the execution just isn't there. Those excited about the idea should seek out Stone's mint chocolate stout. Leave this where it belongs - on the shelf.

Really nice mint in the nose, mint and chocolate in the flavor along with some light rum. Delicious with a creamy body.

Dark brown, small tan head for a little while.
A nice choco-mint smell, but not too overpowering, kinda like smelling an empty box of After Eight. There's quite a lot of dark fruit (fig, dark cherry, plum), some rum, faint tobacco and dark toasted malts.
Pretty obvious, quite complex, but, easy to see from the first sip, not too strong. Juicy and fresh up front, with rum, plum, raisin, lightly tart dark cherries and mint leaves. The minty note sticks around until the end and actually disguises the booze quite nicely. Rich dark chocolate envelops everything, with some licorice and vanilla to spice things up. A gentle roast, light caramel, dusty cocoa powder, faint coffee bean, but unfortunately no woody notes. Booze is just warm in the finish.
Aftertaste has cocoa, a bit of toasted bread, a bit of raisin and a nice sweet minty alcoholic warmth all over the palate. Medium to light bodied, on the verge of being watery. Carbonation is pretty low too.
It's best that one tries this beer with an open mind. A really interesting imperial stout, weirdly refreshing, stealthy and personally i found it quite tasty. Some... intensity in the flavors would've helped.
