my first de molen beer, and it really is quite something, there’s so much going on here, the mix between the vibrant fruit flavours off the base beer combined with the sweet bourbon is brilliant, there’s orange, grape, pear, peach, but also tobacco, wood, caramel, rye bread, chocolate, some herbal tones there as well, also some sherry, cognac, vanilla, its really a wonderful assortment of flavours, medium bodied with low carbonation, quite boozy, reallt shows its strength, quite the beer indeed, a great first de molen beer

Pours really dark amber/brown with a minimum of off-white head, almost immediately popping off to a really thin string of foam.
Smell is rich and fortunately manages to hide the high alcohol content. Big stone fruit jam, big malty sirupy sweetness, raisin, nice fragrant bourbon, oaky vanilla, faint rum truffles, faint soy sauce.
Really juicy sip, a huge splash of caramel and raisin, fig syrup, sugary (but pleasant), orange jam, honey-glazed apricot and peach, plum compote, berries, wow! The definition of "sweet and fruity", with a big emphasis on both words and really complex. Light sweet herbal notes, like forest tea with lots of sugar. Bourbon barrel brings a bigger caramel depth, great vanilla (that goes well with the licorice notes), wet oak stave, but the humongous alcohol level is still not that easily detectable.
It simply numbs out the big sweetness in the finish, leaving a manageable amount of sweetness in the aftertaste, plenty fruity and flavorful. Medium body, low carbonation, really sticky and palate-coating.
The richness invites you to drink this faster, but sip it you should. A dangerously huge barleywine, sweet, complex, great barrel aging, yum yum!

Got this at De Molen in Bodegraven.
From a bottle into a snifter.
Bottled 11 March 2014
EBC: 45
EBU: 57
APPEARANCE: Pours a small, medium looking, bubbly, off-white head with decent retention. Head slowly fades to a slight wisp and bubbly ring. Transparent maroon red with no carbonation evident. A ring with touches of lacing remain but leave no lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Bourbon, oak, coconut and vanilla aromas on the nose. Toffee, dark sugars and a touch of red fruit as well. Bold enough for sure.
TASTE: Oak, toffee, and some bourbon flavors up front. A little underwhelming up front, but more flavor comes out after the swallow. Bourbon, toffee, red fruits, vanilla and coconut, some brown sugar and a touch of alcohol linger nicely on the palate. Not as much heat as expected. Flavorful and lingering aftertaste. Good stuff, though there's still a lot of sweet flavors here.
PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Semi-creamy but a touch prickly on the palate, goes down fine and finishes a bit mouth-coating. Some heat lingers.
OVERALL: Really good overall, but you can definitely taste the overly sweet B&G under it all. Definitely an improvement on the regular base beer, as the barrel aging has added some complexity to the aromas and flavors, though it's still a touch too sweet for top marks in my books. Worth checking out if you're a fan of the base beer.
