Dry hopped with East Kent Goldings

APPEARANCE: Pours a one and a half finger, creamy, off-white head with great retention. Clear maroon red with no carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full wisp and clings to the sides of the glass. A half wisp remains leaving dots of lacing as the glass empties. Good looking.

SMELL: Caramel, toffee, red fruits, some earthy hops and melon aromas on the nose. Medium strength.

TASTE: Lots of caramel and toffee up front, with earthy hops thought he middle and into the swallow. Big, bold finish is fruity with red berries and melon, some caramel and toffee sweetness, earthy bitterness and just a touch of alcohol. Nice sweet flavors do well with the earthier English hops.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down fine and finishes a bit mouth-coating. Some heat lingers.

OVERALL: Good beer. Nice malty sweet profile with some balancing bitterness from the earthy hops. Overall, this one worked out just fine but is not something to write home to your mom about. Give it a shot if you see it.

330ml bottle - since I have no idea who Emelisse is, I'm just gonna blindly dive into this as a De Molen product. Nah - I'll eventually look that shit up.

This beer pours a murky, dark red-brick amber colour, with two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and generally bubbly tan head, which leaves a bit of low-lying Dairy Queen swirl lace around the glass as it lazily recedes.

It smells of punchy dark red berry fruit, edgy musty yeast, doughy pale and caramel malt, candi sugar, shoe leather, further dried orange and lemon fruity notes, more herbal and weedy hops, and a burgeoning alcohol threat. The taste is big, caramel/toffee/treacle malt, a hefty, yet muddled mixed berry fruitiness, estery yeast, a touch of maple tree resin, more free radical sugar, a hint of wet ash, and genteel herbal, leafy, and weedy hops.

The bubbles are actually activated and involved, but at a lower level than my palate (and many others, I presume) can readily detect, the body a stodgy medium weight, and generally smooth, I suppose, the big ABV not all THAT invasive, not yet anyways. It finishes on the sweet side, all that malt, all that sugar, and all that barely checked hop fruitiness not really destined to come out any other way.

This collective Dutch (I almost said Danish - must have been that cool showing at the WJHC today) effort tries, oh it tries, but the biggest clue is in the small print on the label itself. Barley-wine-ish. Yup, that about sums this up - not overtly American, definitely too brash to be English, so I'm rather content with the ish-ishness herein, and you should be too.
