Impromptu hostel review. Found a nonic pint in the cupboard. Score!
Bottle dated 13/07/2011 and drank 11/09/2012.
Pours out like a cola. The same color and the head has has big fizzy bubbles. The body is fairly black but quite a bit of amber around the bottom edge. Was expecting something a little more black from a 10.4% stout named after Rasputin.
Big dark fruit component on the nose along with dark chocolate. There is also an underlying of ash, sweetness, and bread as well.
Dark fruit leads in on the taste. Dark chocolate and roasted coffee aren't too far behind. Gets a little ashy and dark fruity in the aftertaste.
The body isn't too big on this. Maybe all the carbonation makes it seem that way. It's easy to swirl up a nice head after it has subsided but the bubbles don't tax the palette.

Appearance was a beautiful black body and thick sudsy brown head which cleared quickly.
Taste was very rich but pleasingly free of the soy-saucy savoury taste that is common among heavy stouts and porters.
The feel was thick and smooth, not heavily carbonated. Drinkability is very high because the low carbonation and smoother taste didn't wear out the mouth as much as some strong dark beers.

Purchased a bottle (marked as 'cease & desist') on recommendation by store staff.
I wish I had read many of these other reviews first, as I would have gotten some warning about the potential for a gusher.
A - Black/Brown. Very foamy, it was all I could do to get this into a glass without it ending up all over the counter. So, thumbs up on the head retention.
S - Sweet and funky, not sure what kind of yeast they are using but it probably has something to do with the funk.
T - Sweet with a bit of roast then full-on funk and metallic. This beer has potential, but not being a fan Belgians and wilds, this comes across to me as infection vs. an intended effect.
M - Not too thick, not too thin, though it was difficult to get a good feel with the crazy carbonation until I let it warm to room temp.
O - I would not recommend this beer unless you are of the VERY adventurous type, especially considering the steep price tag ($10). I could definitely taste that this beer had potential at some point in the process, but I find the statement that this beer will be good for up to 25 years is laughable from my perspective. Thumbs down!

The beer was black in color with a thin tan head.
Boozy aroma. Roasted malt and dark fruit.
Boozy taste. Chocolate and coffee. Raisins.
This was a nice enough beer. I thought the alcohol was a bit on the intrusive side, and detracted from the enjoyment of the beer.

On tap poured into a tulip.
Pours a bit higher black color with a thin dark brown head with lots of lacing. Nose is sweet, Belgian yeast, and dark toffee notes.
Taste is sharp, a bit acidic, a big Belgian flavor for an imperial Stout, very chewy and full with an almost nitro Mouthfeel, very good. There's a nice Raisin taste as well, chocolate comes out as it warms.

On-tap at the Porter Beer Bar in Atlanta.
Pours black with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.
Smells of muted roasted malts with hints of cocoa powder.
Tastes more robust than it smells. Moderately roasted malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by semi-sweet chocolate flavors. The flavor profile sweetens a bit midway through the sip with the addition of dark molasses, carrying through to a mildly bitter ending.
Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a heavy thickness with moderate carbonation.
Drinkability is good. I didn't have any problems finishing my glass and could have another.
Overall I'd been interested in trying this beer for a while now and was happy to see it on-tap as opposed to paying $25 for a bottle. A solid beer but one not worth seeking out.

A- This beer pours a big fuzz on opening that makes the glass 3/4 creamy tan foam and a jet black body with some good about of jetsam swirling around.
S- The earthy roasted malt has some dark raisins and wet concrete aromas with maple wood and soy sauce hints coming through in the finish. There is a wet diaper (diacetyl) note that comes through but it is not offensive.
T- The mellow roasted black malt has some chocolate malt flavors that grow as the beer opens and a dark cherry ester note from the yeast. There is a char note in the finish that is a bit inky with a green fading bitterness mixed in. The roasted black malt taste lingers after each sip.
M- The full mouthfeel has a thick texture due to the long lasting head and there is no alcohol heat until it is really warm and even then it is an alcohol warmth.
O- This is a nice big stout with De Molen house yeast character shining through to add a Flanders Red note to the beer but it still lurks in the background.

Sampled from the bottle at the Pre-ZBF fest at Alvinne. Straight from the brewers hand. The beer poured a deep black color with a tan head. The nose gives some dried fruit and caramel character, touch of coffee. Taste of cocoa, coffee and a touch of molasses. The taste provides some dried fruit, raisin character and a full body.

330ml bottle, 10.4% ABV, and again, good for 25 years - I like the optimism! And the fact that they can sell this product with the original name here in Canada, though the Yankee lienee's label is the more striking of the two.
This beer pours a clear, very dark amber-highlighted brown - black from afar, but far from black, with two fingers of puffy, creamy beige head, which displays some sturdy retention, dragging the lace down to a low ebbing shoreline detritus.
It smells of edgy, somewhat acidic black fruit, further boozy raisin, bittersweet chocolate, ash, a toasted toffee graininess, and musty, earthy hops. The taste is big, big, gritty chocolate malt, some adjoining sweet roasted grain, soused sour dark fleshy fruit, a bit of edgy, metallic alcohol, and bitter herbal, leafy hops.
The carbonation is low-lying, and just supportive, the body a hefty, but spry, medium weight, and fairly smooth, with a touch of creaminess in amongst the remarkably restrained barbs of heat. It finishes quite sweet, the chocolate, fruit, and booze carrying the day in the face of that increasingly weird herbal hop character.
While there are some indicators that could recommend this as more than just an average RIS, there are more that point it towards generic (not a bad thing) strong ale territory. Not a bad big beer, just lacking the roasted fullness of the better examples of the genre. That, and those herbal notes really don't help the cause.

My bottle is titled Rasputin, and was bottled on ?, bottle ?, the bottle mentions a alcohol percentage of 10,4% instate of the 11% mentioned by BA.
A - A pitch-black red colored beer (is this possible?) Good head, but it fades pretty quickly leaving a decent lacing.
S - Love the aromas coming off this beer, smells like a kind of black candy, liquorice and a bit of burnt sugar. I could swear that there is some champagne yeast used.
T - The taste is absolutely different than the smell would give away. Excellent brew! I am already sure that I will buy this beer again and again, a heavenly stout thats already for sure. Is there any alcohol in this beer? Very good alcohol hiding for a beer with more than 10% ABV. A complex beer with an superb taste. The after taste is what it should be. Sorry to say, but to my humble opinion its better than what the Struise brews (only concerning to the after taste that is). This is about as wild a stout as I've had. Not sour exactly but more sweet brown sugar, caramel, hoppy, some cherries and cocoa powder. A real funky brew, very unique!
M - Mouth-feel is solid over all. It was also a little syrupy but I can't complain.
O - Overall I liked it quite a bit. But I think that was already obvious. Pretty funky for a stout and definitely very unique. Is this beer made in Holland? A reason the more to be proud on my country.

A: Pours a modest brown, almost cola-like with a permanent beige head.
S: Molasses, fig, roasted grain and a inviting sweetness.
T: Still quite sweet with a pair of years on it. A wonderful medley of dark fruit, chocolate liquor and roasted barley. Minimal resinous hops under the dessert-like body and finishing with a nice roasted flavor.
M: Thinner than many in the style, but dangerously easy to drink. The 11% is almost completely hidden and the word boozy was has never come to mind while enjoying this.
D: The sweetness is the only thing slowing my consumption. I won't have a problem finishing this off but I AM worried about the sneaky little ABV affect my gait.

Bottle courtesy of Jason, found at Julio's. Aroma of roast primarily, and malt. Black with big bubbly white head. Significant lace. A good above-average mouthfeel. Nice drinkability. This beer is a good product for the style, but it does have lots of competition these days and that is taken into account.

Not a whole lotta wax on here. It's a 2008.
Thin offwhite head, cloudy rich brown. Faint lace. Little spiral on the surface.
Smells like age, and a bit of cherry and rich malt.
Taste is good, powerfully malty with a bit of licorice, a trace of cherry. Some age is evident, but not 'vintage'-ey. Kinda Belgian yeast profile. This could be a roasty, slightly dry quad. Relatively balanced by some bittering hops that remain present despite 4 years cellaring.
Nice and smooth feel.
Very nice beer, but by no means meritorious of the $25 I paid for it.

My bottle is titled Rasputin, and was bottled on March 2009, bottle #237. To begin with I noticed the cork was about half way out of the bottle breaking the wax seal and literally pushing up against the cage. Don't know why I didn't bother opening it over the sink, but after the inevitable explosion and losing of 1/3 of the beer on the floor I might suggest you practice more cautionary measures than I did.
A: Pretty interesting color on this one, definitely dark in color but with some transparency and reddish undertones. Ridicilous carbonation as you would expect from a gusher like this but it fades pretty quick leaving little to no lacing.
S: Love the aromas coming off this, smells kind of like a flemish sour with notes of sour cherries, liquorice, burnt sugar, molasses and vinegar.
T: This is about as wild a stout as I've had. Not sour exactly but definitely a little tartness and funkiness. Flavors of mushrooms, sour cherries, cocoa powder, balsalmic vinegar and maybe a hint of grapey sweetness. Very unique!
M: Mouthfeel is solid over all. I let this beer sit for an hour or two without meaning to, which was way to long, and it ended up being a little flat. Was also a little syrupy but it's a pretty high ABV so I can't complain.
O: Overall I liked it quite a bit. Pretty funky for a stout and definitely very uniquely earthy and mushroomy, flavors I'm sure the 2 years in bottle helped develope. The only beer I can think of that's even close is Madrugada Obscura from Jolly Pumpkin. And I'm a fan of both.

Rasputin pours a dark chocolate fudge color. It looks onyx, but isn’t quite there. Backlighting reveals some burgundy highlights. Carbonation is very active. It’s a little annoying. A very careful pour yields a head around four fingers in depth. It recedes at a reasonable pace, and leaves a little lace behind.
The nose is good. Chocolate and roasted malts are front and center. A mix dark chocolate, cocoa, and light sweet milk chocolate are all noted. The malt base smells really nice. Secondary scents of roasted coffee and molasses add nice depth and complement the malts well. Alcohol is blended pretty well for 10.7%. Pretty straight forward, but smells good.
The flavor keeps the pace. Chocolate malts are definitely the focal point. Roasted malts are there, but are definitely secondary. The chocolate variety is really nice and features sweet chocolate, light cocoa, and a hint of bittersweet dark chocolate. Secondary flavors include coffee, black licorice, molasses, and maybe even a bit of anise. There’s even a small, tangy dark fruit flavor on the tail. Alcohol is noticeable, but isn’t warming or hot at all. Finishes sweet and chocolaty.
Rasputin has a medium body. Carbonation is quite active, but doesn’t feel buzzy. It doesn’t have a bad feel, but a little more body would help.
Rasputin is good beer. It’s a pretty solid effort all-around. A little more of the secondary flavors would improve it a little. The chocolate flavors seem to be very strong throughout. Not that I’m complaining all that much…it does have a nice flavor. A little more body and less carbonation would also be notable improvements. Big stouts need big bodies. All in all, this is good stuff. I enjoyed it.
