Pours a peculiar murky brown color, like copious amounts of dirt in suspension, with burnt orange highlights. There is no head to speak of. I would not have pegged this for a stout based on its appearance. The aroma, sniffed directly from the bottle before pouring, is amazing--blackberry, cherry, currants, molasses, and pie crust come to mind.
The taste features the same tart, dark fruits described above, with cherry being the primary contributor. The sour aspect leans toward apple cider vinegar as it warms. A caramel-like sweetness contrasts with the tartness of the cherry. Alcohol is well concealed, with only a tasteful amount of warming coming through in the finish. The mouthfeel is peculiar as well, with a heterogeneous texture akin to miso broth. It's difficult to describe, but it's almost as if the beer is more substantive upon first imbibing, and then "melts" in your mouth (if such a thing can be said of a liquid).
Overall, this is one of the most unusual beers I've ever tried. It looks and tastes NOTHING like an imperial stout. If someone told me they slapped the wrong label on it, I wouldn't be surprised in the least. Unusual mouthfeel aside, it comes off as something in between a sour ale and a quad--a real headscratcher.

Pitch black with a big, fluffy tan head. Great head retention.
Sweet and almost citrussy. Touches of chocolate and alcohol. Plenty of hop character.
Sharply hoppy stout. There is a rich alcohol character sitting under the malt with chocolate and light roast following. Citrussy hops back it up. The fruitiness really works well.
Medium-full body with moderate carbonation. Really good.
A solid beer. Great flavour and all round performer.
