Poured from small bottle (purchased at K&L in Redwood City, CA) into a chalice glass.

Very dark brown color. Almost no head or carbonation... possible seepage from bottle-cap, which had some weird residue?

Smell is toasty and chocolatey, but it smells slightly sour.

Taste is very peaty, toasty. Dry, but not sour. Flat mouthfeel (again, possibly from defective capping, rather than intentional). Strange but tasty enough.

Easter 2014
Friend brought this over, after aging 3 of the 5 years recommended on label. Brewed 16Feb2011; bottled 21Mar2011. Bottle #814 of ?
Appearance: Stout; thick head on pouring that didn't linger too long. Bubbles were small and uniform.
Smell: Reminded me of port.
Taste: Very smooth, fruity. Not so much roast.
Mouthfeel: Thin compared to many stouts.
Overall: Very impressed. Don't know if the port characteristics would have continued to develop if aged another two years, but it hardly matters.

This is one of the 696 bottles from the 1/17/08 brew date.

This pours with a nice tan head which lingers somewhat briefly. Color is a dark brown with ruby highlights on the edges. It really has great color if you know about the changes in red wine. The smell is sweeter than the taste, with some roast, caramel and grains.

The mouthfeel is medium, lighter than a typical stout. It's fermented quite dry. So smooth... it's got to have oats. Medium roast, chocolate. I love this beer, but tastes more like an amazing porter. No apparent alcohol but with an OG of 1094 it's there. It doesn't taste like an FG of 1020. Seems too dry.. Just a beautifully smooth beer.

Overall this beer is fantastic. The label states good for 5 years, and this is almost 6, but very enjoyable.

Bottled 9/15/2010. Almost exactly 3 years old.

A: Bottle doesn't explode when the cork is popped but the bubbles build very slowly inside the bottle. After making my pour of a full snifter, 10 minutes later it was foaming out of the bottle. Very unusual, it continues to foam over even when the bottle is half empty. Pours a very dark brown but not quite black. Very large and very thick, fluffy light brown head. Head fades slowly with absolutely zero sign of lacing. Great retention however, especially since it seems capable of generating its own head without even touching the bottle or glass.

S: Nice mellow burnt malts. Roasted coffee. Fairly sweet and creamy, almost a caramel-like sweetness to it in fact. Hints of sweet milk chocolate.

T: Nice roasted coffee up front with a sweet milk chocolate backing. Some chalky char in the middle leading into bittersweet chocolate in the finish. Fairly dry finish in fact, one of the driest 10% stouts ever, IMO. Lingering charry flavor between sips, distinctive of de molen stouts.

M: Medium bodied, smooth but a little thin for almost 10%.

O: Not a bad FES. Age has mellowed and smooth it out but it still has a prominent and sharp char character. Can't imagine how strong it was 3 years ago. Alcohol is completely hidden, drinks like a 6-7% porter not a 10% stout. Nice drinkability as a result. Good beer, lacking a bit in complexity but I enjoyed it.

750ml. Bot march 2011. A very dark brown, some light does get through especially around the edge. A thin layer of white.

Aroma, dark fruit and dark chocolate. Maybe a little peaty maltyness.

Taste, a good dose of raspberry, cherry up front. Works quickly to more toasted malt, chocolate. Finishes pretty dry with a mild roast and cocoa.

Carbonation is just a bit too sharp to be creamy at first, but it gets there as it sets a bit. Solidly mid bodied. A very faint warming.
Knocking out a few more of the Belgian characteristics would have put this over the top. As it is, pretty good, though a tough price point.
The best I have had from the DeMolen brewery.

Clear yet dark brown body topped with a rich, creamy tan head. Roasted grains, slightly toasty; baking chocolate in the aroma. Lightly charred grain flavor, bitterness sneaking in midway and lingering in the finish, slight alcohol warmth; slight sourness. Medium-light bodied; clean with lingering sugar residuals.

A great looking stout; great roasted scents. I was somewhat surprised at the relative lightness to the body. The rich, dark malted character dominates the initial taste, giving away to a nice hop bitterness (and, perhaps, grain huskiness or tannin note) and a faint hint at the relatively high ABV.

A - Pours black, mocha-colored head, thin collar.

S - Dark chocolate, toasted malts, light roast, light coffee.

T - Pretty much right in line with the nose with a mix of bitter dark chocolate, toasted bready notes, malts, some coffee beans. Alcohol is well-hidden for 10%. Finish is chocolate & roast.

M - Medium body, over-carbonated, creamy finish.

O - A decent Export Stout (of some sort) but not something I'd really go after again. I didn't hate this beer, but I also didn't think it was good enough to order again or seek out a bottle of.

Brewed August 4, 2010, bottled September 15, 2010, drank June 10, 2012.

A - amber brown light through center of glass. Off-white head is tighter than any other that I have seen.

S - mildly toasted malts, dark chocolate, dark fruit and a hint of caramel.

T - this might be off... odd bitter yeast, toasted malts, dark chocolate. The off taste goes away after a few drinks, but it is still bitter.

M - Good thickness and coating. Very mild tingle on tongue and throat.

O - I would like to try another bottle to see if the taste is the same. However as it stands it is a pass.

Picked this up at the Brouwerij De Molen beer store. Dark brown, almost black pour that turned into a total gusher when I opened it. Had this happen in the past with De Molen beers so I was somewhat prepared and saved most of it. For all that foam and head, it didn't last long at all and had minimal lacing. Huge roasty nose with a ton of coffee along with hints of cocoa, espresso, and just a touch of hops and black licorice. The taste follows suit with loads of coffee and chocolate with hints of tobacco, soy sauce, and a bit of caramel and toffee. The mouthfeel leaned more towards a Porter than a stout and was slightly fizzy. The finish was extra dry with a nice bitter hop bite. The alcohol was totally hidden making this extremely drinkable. Another great beer from De Molen!

Appearance: Dark brown starts with a huge, tan head, fades to a nice cap - foamy lacing

Smell: Cooked, roasted malts, and a ton of chocolate - a lot of sweetness, a lot of booze - kind of smells like a burnt barleywine (similar sweetness level) - lots of dark fruits

Taste: Follows the aroma - dry, dark chocolate malts and burnt, roasty flavors - an interesting malt profile - cooked, caramelized malts - chocolaty - a lot of dark fruit flavors that lend a slight tart flavor - plum, fig - booze becomes more apparent as it warms

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium body, could be heavier given the flavor, a bit overcarbonated

Overall: Weird but tasty

The label describes this beer as a porter, but it definitely isn't. It is somewhere between a light, chocolatey quad, a Belgian stout, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale. Whatever this is, it was interesting.

Pours dark b rown to black in a Dogfish Head snifter with ruby red highlights when put to the light. A big, creamy manila head drops quickly to half an inch, then waits out the session.

Deep roasted malt with burnt sugar and some burnt coffee grinds.

Flavor follow the nose adding baker’s chocolate and nuts with a hint of dried fruits and cigar. This is yet another stout that improves with warmth.

Well balanced with a medium body, light carbonation and surprisingly no alcohol.

This is a laid-back beer for conversation. While there is not much to this one, it is done well and would match with a cigar. Having aged 18 months in the bottle, it has clearly mellowed out.

Tons of info on the label, including "Original 1914 Recipe London triple Stout." Brewed 16 Feb. 2011, bottled 21 March 2011. Bottle # 1116 of 1182. 9.99% ABV.

Ok, this is only one of two caged beers that doesn't twist off in exactly six turns. The other was some U.S. beer. Sure the Belgians would never break such tradition. Once uncorked it offers a superbly opaque dark brown (darkest brown) liquid, topped with an absolutely gorgeous light tan head of fluffy stuff, stiff and long lasting. Sheets of mocha lace left on the glass. This thing looks legendary.

Aroma is immediately problematic. Has that stiff, coin-like whiff of something way too mineral/chemical, which masks what seems to be a very bitter roast smell. Also a bit phenolic, chemical, plastic. Uh oh.

Taste isn't as bad as the smell suggests. If you like bitter dark roast mainstream coffee (like Folgers or something) and the allure of powdered chocolate milk mixes (Quik). These are the prevailing flavors, along with a decidedly mineral snap. Alcohol plays into the taste, in a good way, giving it a nice glow that helps keep it on the enjoyable side. Pretty huge layer of smoke; raisin too. In fact, with warming, raisin abounds. Hops are definitely big, bigger than I imagine they were in 1914, betraying the citrus-y ghost of U.S. influence.

I would like this beer a little more if the texture weren't so tingly and sharply carbonated. It's smooth enough but not at all stout-ish, neither in the traditional nor amped-up super-thick American sense. Feels like a bubbly IPA of some kind. Bothers me, as this demands a much milkier texture.

Love the shit out of this brewery's Heaven & Hell (one of the best-ever stouts), but SSS is merely okay. It fails biggest in the Smell and Mouthfeel categories. It has redeeming elements too, but considering how transcendent H&H was, I'll be sipping on it with less enthusiasm than expected.

750mL bottle poured into snifter - thanks to CarolinaKevin

Pours a browned color with some brighter almost reddish hues in the light. A layer of opaque head rests on top and retains well, leaving patchy lacing on the glass.

Cocoa powder and chocolate in the nose with some roasted malt tones. A touch of alcohol warmth with hints of dark fruit and burnt sugar. Slight mustiness as well.

Touch of hops up front, quickly swept away by some layers of malts. Roasted and warm with cocoa and dark chocolate. Almost a touch of Belgian-like yeast, which was a bit odd, but seemed to work somewhat. Warming booze towards the finish with some residual sweetness.

Fuller medium body, decent carbonation, pretty smooth and chewy on the palate. Not bad, but probably not worth the price point, and I had a hard time picking up on some of the flavors.

A: The beer is very dark brown (close to near black) in color and poured with a finger high creamy brownish gray head that has excellent retention properties and consistently left a quarter finger high head covering the surface.
S: The taste has aromas of dark fruits and roasted malts.
T: The taste has fruity flavors of grapes and roasted malts along with some hints of coffee and nuts.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate to high amount of carbonation.
O: Despite its strength, this beer is very easy to drink because there are no traces of alcohol present in the smell or taste.

Thanks to angrybabboon for half of this bottle.

Appearance: Black with some dark brown at the edges. Head is creamy, tan, and lingers for the duration of the drinking experience. Minimal lacing. Pours thick and heavy.

Smell: Booze, dark fruit, cocoa. Loads of booze and heat. Very sweet. Raisins for days. It almost smells like a young, and I mean young, barleywine. Caramel, chocolate, raisins and booze. I'm serious about this booze things. Are we sure this is a porter, and an English one at that? It's complex and intense, but lacks that distinct minerality.

Taste: Loads of cocoa. Raisins and of course, tons of booze. Big sweet malts and the faintest touch of grassy hops linger in the back. Cocoa-dusted raisins. Bready quality on the back. Minerality hides, but sneaks through in small amounts. Tastes like a fusion of a Belgian quad and an English barleywine. I think I'm missing something here...a porter.

Mouthfeel: Too much carbonation. Bubbly, but smooth overall. A little thin overall, and with the high carbonation, it really loses in the long run. Drinkability falls as a result.

Overall: This is not a bad beer, it's just not the beer it says it is. I'm missing something or anything akin to an English porter and the carbonation really detracts from something that might better fall in the nebulous Belgian Strong Dark Ale category.

I had this one as part of my warm-up act at Zwanze Day 2011 presented at Churchkey.

A: Pitch black, with a MASSIVE and extremely foamy head that looked like whipped creme with cracked pepper.

S: Roasted barley upfront in spades, with milk chocolate, mild coffee, and more than a hint of rye bread.

T: First of all, the finish was grainy and extremely dry. On the brew itself, along with milk chocolate, I also got a tinge of caramel, along a sort of a sour, burnt-roast quality that was very unique.

M: Moderately thick, with a tinge of off-kilter (sort of sour) sweetness, and the lacing was somewhat ridiculous.

O: One of the weirdest stouts I've ever tasted, but also one of the most memorable. If David Lynch were to go into the brewing business and create a stout, this would be the result.

Brown pour with a big, bubbly white head. The lacing is fine retention is great. The smell is of dark fruits and roasted malts mostly. It smells a lot like a quad honestly. Really not a lot of stout characteristics. Big dark fruits, booze, roasted malts on the backend with perhaps some coffee. This tasted like a nice blend of a quad and a stout. Very interesting and enjoyable. Medium body, carbonated well. Hints of booze. I liked this. Not what I was expecting but a welcomed mix. Unlike any stout I've had before.

Poured on tap at Churchkey DC into a snifter. Lists as an imperial stout but does feel more porter like.

A creamy off tan coffee textured head, sitting upon a simple dark walnut and red hued body. Not much lacing while finishing but looks solid enough.

The nose on this is very impressive. Silky milk chocolate, dry cocoa powder, lots of cinnamon and brown sugar, just wonderful.

Taste is a very light milky and light skim milk texture. Nutty mixture almost like a brown ale with porter mix. Malted milk sense as well on the palate.

Overall pretty neat tasting, quite unique, interesting angle. Rather enjoy it even though it has some odd characters.

Label reads "Original 1914 recipe London Triple Stout."

APPEARANCE: Clear brown pour makes a three finger, medium-thin, looser, crackly, light brown head with pretty good retention. Clear dark brown body, almost black, with medium carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a good foam cap that remains until the end and leaves some decent splotchy lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Roasted malts, smoky notes with cocoa powder. Classic De Molen nose. Bold enough, with earthy peat aromas as well and some nice milk chocolate under everything. Good stuff.

TASTE: Roasted and smoky malts with a burst of cocoa powder and hop bitterness. Some milk chocolate and licorice with some nice peat flavors as well, moving into a bold and lingering bitter hop finish. Earthy hops with just a touch of booze, roasted malts and some cocoa powder linger nicely on the palate. Tasty stuff.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Pretty light on the palate, semi- creamy, and goes down smooth with a little burn after the swallow. Finishes slightly dry on the palate.

OVERALL: Another good De Molen brew. This is kind of a touchstone for their stout beer, as it is a tasty and aromatic beer, but would need a heavier, thicker palate to really get the flavors over the hump. A tighter head would also help the scores. That said, I enjoyed this one very much. If you’re interested in the brewery, this would be a stout to check out. If you enjoy it, then their barrel aged and smaller batch stuff would be well worth tracking down. A good beer that I’ve had before and will have again. Recommended.

2008 Vintage. Bottle number 10 of 616

Pours dark brown, settles virtually black. Tan head of a couple fingers adorns. Aroma is rich malts, roasted malts, bitter chocolate and dry cocoa powder. Slight yeast esters and maybe some stale hop notes. Taste is much more chocolate and cocoa, or even a bakers chocolate. Rather roasted and toasty. Some yeast esters and a hint of oxidation. Feel is near full, with a bit elevated carbonation, but a creamy, dry finish.

May be better fresh. Not sure I would age one the full 5 years it claims.

A: Very dark brown when held up to the light but otherwise appears black. Generous size beige head which slowly faded. All good here.

S: Chocolate and faint coffee/roasted malt aromas.

T: The chocolate features most prominently with the roasted malts/coffee flavors in the background. At times I picked up a faint sour taste. I would never have guessed this was 10% ABV

M: Fairly light body with good carbonation.

O: Good beer but I wonder if the flavors would have been more upfront earlier in it's life.

A-As soon as I undid the cage the cork came right behind it. Took a lot to keep it from shooting out. Once removed, however, the bottle was not a gusher. Pours shiny black with ruby highlights and a shimmering mocha colored head that fizzles away, leaving no lacing.

S-Could smell this one from a few feet away. Milky coffee, milk chocolate, roasted barley, a hint of grassy hops. Appetizing.

T/M-There's a sharp oxidization flavor right up front, but it disappears really quickly, revealing smoky roasted barley flavors and a chalky mouth coating tannic quality. Oxidized flavors return in the form are sharp fruitiness on the back palate. Warming quality on the back of the throat. Full bodied with light, peppery carbonation.

O-My least favorite from De Molen so far, but still a solid beer worth your attention.

Bottle #478: This beer was said to be a rarity when I saw it on the menu at the Bethlehem Speakeasy. I figured that I must try it then since I'm easily persuaded into things like this. The bottle was split between a friend and myself that night. The pour was nice. It gave of a deep black color with a creamy brown looking head that stuck around for a little while. The smell of the beer had some very heavy burnt aromas coming off of it. There was a booze aroma too that was also there. The taste of the bee was very dry and gave off plenty of burnt toast flavors mixed with some rich dark chocolate. The mouthfeel was lighter than I expected a "Triple Stout" to be... Overall I found the beer to be pretty good, I'd say if you have the money on hand give it a try but if not, you're really not missing out on too much. It was nice to try but I wouldn't have to purchase it again.

750ml bottle from Wilbur's in Ft. Collins for around $12 I think. Bottled September 15th, 2010. Bottle #327.

A: Pours a dark brown color with a light tan colored head, mostly opaque. Nice gobs of lacing as it recedes. Really nice looking beer.

S: Coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, and a slightly earthy hop profile in there as well. Really digging the huge coffee profile in the nose here. No booze, even for a 9.99% beer.

T: Again a lot of coffee, some chocolate, and some earthy bitter hops on the finish. Really nice dark chocolate flavor throughout. Some nice vanilla flavors that are subtly mixed in with the chocolate and coffee. Really a flavorful malty porter. No booze either.

M: Lighter in body than I had anticipated, carbonation is a little on the strong side as well. A little warmth on the swallow, but not bad for the ABV. The really light mouthfeel is a bit odd.

O: Really an enjoyable beer, minus the thin/overcarbonated mouthfeel. I love lots of coffee in a beer, and this definitely delivers. I will have to grab another bottle the next time I see some. Nice beer.

Poured into a aarge [int glass a deep dark brown with some ruby tinge when held to the light,a one finger beige head atop.Heavy roast and molasses really stood out in the nose,some alcohol sweetness crept thru as well.A creamy feel that coats the mouth.Dark fruit and dark chocolate dominate the palate,a great mix of flavors an feel to this beer,complex and flavorful.I would buy again in a heartbeat.
