A: The beer is very dark brown (close to near black) in color and poured with a finger high creamy brownish gray head that has excellent retention properties and consistently left a quarter finger high head covering the surface.
S: The taste has aromas of dark fruits and roasted malts.
T: The taste has fruity flavors of grapes and roasted malts along with some hints of coffee and nuts.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate to high amount of carbonation.
O: Despite its strength, this beer is very easy to drink because there are no traces of alcohol present in the smell or taste.

Thanks to angrybabboon for half of this bottle.

Appearance: Black with some dark brown at the edges. Head is creamy, tan, and lingers for the duration of the drinking experience. Minimal lacing. Pours thick and heavy.

Smell: Booze, dark fruit, cocoa. Loads of booze and heat. Very sweet. Raisins for days. It almost smells like a young, and I mean young, barleywine. Caramel, chocolate, raisins and booze. I'm serious about this booze things. Are we sure this is a porter, and an English one at that? It's complex and intense, but lacks that distinct minerality.

Taste: Loads of cocoa. Raisins and of course, tons of booze. Big sweet malts and the faintest touch of grassy hops linger in the back. Cocoa-dusted raisins. Bready quality on the back. Minerality hides, but sneaks through in small amounts. Tastes like a fusion of a Belgian quad and an English barleywine. I think I'm missing something here...a porter.

Mouthfeel: Too much carbonation. Bubbly, but smooth overall. A little thin overall, and with the high carbonation, it really loses in the long run. Drinkability falls as a result.

Overall: This is not a bad beer, it's just not the beer it says it is. I'm missing something or anything akin to an English porter and the carbonation really detracts from something that might better fall in the nebulous Belgian Strong Dark Ale category.

I had this one as part of my warm-up act at Zwanze Day 2011 presented at Churchkey.

A: Pitch black, with a MASSIVE and extremely foamy head that looked like whipped creme with cracked pepper.

S: Roasted barley upfront in spades, with milk chocolate, mild coffee, and more than a hint of rye bread.

T: First of all, the finish was grainy and extremely dry. On the brew itself, along with milk chocolate, I also got a tinge of caramel, along a sort of a sour, burnt-roast quality that was very unique.

M: Moderately thick, with a tinge of off-kilter (sort of sour) sweetness, and the lacing was somewhat ridiculous.

O: One of the weirdest stouts I've ever tasted, but also one of the most memorable. If David Lynch were to go into the brewing business and create a stout, this would be the result.

On tap at Churchkey.

Brown pour with a big, bubbly white head. The lacing is fine retention is great. The smell is of dark fruits and roasted malts mostly. It smells a lot like a quad honestly. Really not a lot of stout characteristics. Big dark fruits, booze, roasted malts on the backend with perhaps some coffee. This tasted like a nice blend of a quad and a stout. Very interesting and enjoyable. Medium body, carbonated well. Hints of booze. I liked this. Not what I was expecting but a welcomed mix. Unlike any stout I've had before.

Poured on tap at Churchkey DC into a snifter. Lists as an imperial stout but does feel more porter like.

A creamy off tan coffee textured head, sitting upon a simple dark walnut and red hued body. Not much lacing while finishing but looks solid enough.

The nose on this is very impressive. Silky milk chocolate, dry cocoa powder, lots of cinnamon and brown sugar, just wonderful.

Taste is a very light milky and light skim milk texture. Nutty mixture almost like a brown ale with porter mix. Malted milk sense as well on the palate.

Overall pretty neat tasting, quite unique, interesting angle. Rather enjoy it even though it has some odd characters.

Label reads "Original 1914 recipe London Triple Stout."

APPEARANCE: Clear brown pour makes a three finger, medium-thin, looser, crackly, light brown head with pretty good retention. Clear dark brown body, almost black, with medium carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a good foam cap that remains until the end and leaves some decent splotchy lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Roasted malts, smoky notes with cocoa powder. Classic De Molen nose. Bold enough, with earthy peat aromas as well and some nice milk chocolate under everything. Good stuff.

TASTE: Roasted and smoky malts with a burst of cocoa powder and hop bitterness. Some milk chocolate and licorice with some nice peat flavors as well, moving into a bold and lingering bitter hop finish. Earthy hops with just a touch of booze, roasted malts and some cocoa powder linger nicely on the palate. Tasty stuff.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Pretty light on the palate, semi- creamy, and goes down smooth with a little burn after the swallow. Finishes slightly dry on the palate.

OVERALL: Another good De Molen brew. This is kind of a touchstone for their stout beer, as it is a tasty and aromatic beer, but would need a heavier, thicker palate to really get the flavors over the hump. A tighter head would also help the scores. That said, I enjoyed this one very much. If you’re interested in the brewery, this would be a stout to check out. If you enjoy it, then their barrel aged and smaller batch stuff would be well worth tracking down. A good beer that I’ve had before and will have again. Recommended.

2008 Vintage. Bottle number 10 of 616

Pours dark brown, settles virtually black. Tan head of a couple fingers adorns. Aroma is rich malts, roasted malts, bitter chocolate and dry cocoa powder. Slight yeast esters and maybe some stale hop notes. Taste is much more chocolate and cocoa, or even a bakers chocolate. Rather roasted and toasty. Some yeast esters and a hint of oxidation. Feel is near full, with a bit elevated carbonation, but a creamy, dry finish.

May be better fresh. Not sure I would age one the full 5 years it claims.

A: Very dark brown when held up to the light but otherwise appears black. Generous size beige head which slowly faded. All good here.

S: Chocolate and faint coffee/roasted malt aromas.

T: The chocolate features most prominently with the roasted malts/coffee flavors in the background. At times I picked up a faint sour taste. I would never have guessed this was 10% ABV

M: Fairly light body with good carbonation.

O: Good beer but I wonder if the flavors would have been more upfront earlier in it's life.

A-As soon as I undid the cage the cork came right behind it. Took a lot to keep it from shooting out. Once removed, however, the bottle was not a gusher. Pours shiny black with ruby highlights and a shimmering mocha colored head that fizzles away, leaving no lacing.

S-Could smell this one from a few feet away. Milky coffee, milk chocolate, roasted barley, a hint of grassy hops. Appetizing.

T/M-There's a sharp oxidization flavor right up front, but it disappears really quickly, revealing smoky roasted barley flavors and a chalky mouth coating tannic quality. Oxidized flavors return in the form are sharp fruitiness on the back palate. Warming quality on the back of the throat. Full bodied with light, peppery carbonation.

O-My least favorite from De Molen so far, but still a solid beer worth your attention.

Bottle #478: This beer was said to be a rarity when I saw it on the menu at the Bethlehem Speakeasy. I figured that I must try it then since I'm easily persuaded into things like this. The bottle was split between a friend and myself that night. The pour was nice. It gave of a deep black color with a creamy brown looking head that stuck around for a little while. The smell of the beer had some very heavy burnt aromas coming off of it. There was a booze aroma too that was also there. The taste of the bee was very dry and gave off plenty of burnt toast flavors mixed with some rich dark chocolate. The mouthfeel was lighter than I expected a "Triple Stout" to be... Overall I found the beer to be pretty good, I'd say if you have the money on hand give it a try but if not, you're really not missing out on too much. It was nice to try but I wouldn't have to purchase it again.

750ml bottle from Wilbur's in Ft. Collins for around $12 I think. Bottled September 15th, 2010. Bottle #327.

A: Pours a dark brown color with a light tan colored head, mostly opaque. Nice gobs of lacing as it recedes. Really nice looking beer.

S: Coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, and a slightly earthy hop profile in there as well. Really digging the huge coffee profile in the nose here. No booze, even for a 9.99% beer.

T: Again a lot of coffee, some chocolate, and some earthy bitter hops on the finish. Really nice dark chocolate flavor throughout. Some nice vanilla flavors that are subtly mixed in with the chocolate and coffee. Really a flavorful malty porter. No booze either.

M: Lighter in body than I had anticipated, carbonation is a little on the strong side as well. A little warmth on the swallow, but not bad for the ABV. The really light mouthfeel is a bit odd.

O: Really an enjoyable beer, minus the thin/overcarbonated mouthfeel. I love lots of coffee in a beer, and this definitely delivers. I will have to grab another bottle the next time I see some. Nice beer.

Poured into a aarge [int glass a deep dark brown with some ruby tinge when held to the light,a one finger beige head atop.Heavy roast and molasses really stood out in the nose,some alcohol sweetness crept thru as well.A creamy feel that coats the mouth.Dark fruit and dark chocolate dominate the palate,a great mix of flavors an feel to this beer,complex and flavorful.I would buy again in a heartbeat.

Look: Dark-brown-black color with a tiny brown head.
Smell: Smoke, coffee, liquorice, soy sauce, chocolate.
Taste: The taste follows the nose; coffee, liquorice, chocolate, soysauce, spicy herbs. Not very bitter in the aftertaste, just enough to keep the beer balanced.
Mouthfeel: medium-low carbonation, medium mouthfeel
Overall: Perfectly balanced traditional triple stout. Happy that I finally tried!

Review from notes during our blind tasting. Thanks to Bob for bringing this. Been wanting to try this for a while and was quite a surprise when unveiled.

Poured dark brown, probably a dark chocolate brown with an egg nog colored head that was rather scant. It wasn't murky but definitely not clear. Nose is booming with alcohol. Very little else, maybe a hint of roast and some dark chocolate. Let's let this sit and warm up for a bit.

Ah yes, there we are. We served it too cold. Now I'm gathering much more complexity. The aforementioned chocolate gives a nice cocoa sweetness followed by a burnt toast flavor. Then the ash. Oh man this is an ashy beer. And the alcohol is still quite prominent. It's a bit harsh and the very light body doesn't really help IMO. It's a two dimensional beer: a couple of flavors + alcohol. Good, but not great.

Nice revisit to an old porter recipe, smooth and quaffable.

Presentation: 750 ml corked and caged brown bottle. Standard De Molen Label, text over white background detailing the characteristics of the brew such as bittering hops, EBU's (84.5), OG (1090), bottle number (314 out of 616), which will be good for five years from the bottling date (23 May 2008). Notes 9.99% Alc. by Vol. Served in a tulip glass.

A - Very dark brown pour with a fair head, moderate retention and surface memory, and some touches of lacing.

S - Good nose with roasted malts. Touches of coffee and a hint of chocolate.

T - Taste flows accordingly with dexterity an quite a composed sense: roasted malts, coffee, the touch of chocolate, a minimal fruitiness around the bitter finish.

M - Medium body and carbonation. Fairly smooth with the alcohol very well integrated and balanced.

O - Nicely quaffable and with a good flow.

Notes: Nice historic exercise. Maybe not too exciting but what Pattinson and Menno do here is rather welcome. Quality offering and a stimulating insight into vintage brewing.

Vicious, awful when cold. Almost pushed back a glass that wasn't empty, but I growed up for a few moments and eventually put it back.

It very nearly tasted like Jäger in that initial Arctic range of temp - highly medicinal sweet/sour booze enveloped in a coat of bitter licorice and mid-grade jet black espresso. After quite awhile and as it boosted into the 50s, the bitter licorice subsided, becoming instead a sort of bitter Belgian chocolate, still devoid of any sweetness which could've complemented. But for the longest time there, each sip yielded a two-dimensional, palate-arresting, potentially hazardous shock of fermented bat piss, or something of that nature.

Even after the flavor became a hell of a bit more palatable, the ultra-smooth, semi-ultra-clean, semi-thin body still held little in the way of malt nougat. It's a slick, flat-silky boozy-strong porter-esque brew. Not much to excite over on the nose either - really, the scent was a notch or two more frozen stiff than the initial taste, lacking depth and richness and only toward the end revealing some charcoaly bitter roast, and maybe some hop (probably not), while the booze faded, without anything to round it out or play against.

Billed as a stout on the chalkboard at the Shelton Bros event - you could/should bump this up into the "imperial porter" category.

Bottle #280 bottled on 09-May-2008 and received from theminutemen.

Appearance: A light pour into my Spiegelau tulip yields a ton of head. The cork came off with a loud pop, but I wasn’t expecting quite this much carbonation from something bottled in 2008. The head tops a very dark liquid that appears black, but when held up to the light, reddish hues seep around the edges. Decent head retention caps off a very interesting beer.

Smell: This beer smells like a chocolate covered espresso bean. Large amounts of sweet chocolate and vanilla malts are present tempered slightly by a coffee bitterness. Can barely pick up the earthiness of the UK hops, but there is a definite breadiness and a bit of toasted notes that are discernable.

Taste: The nose did not disappoint as I’m picking up all kinds of sweet coffee, chocolate, caramel, and vanilla flavors. The finish is all brown sugary goodness. I don’t get any of the earthiness that I got in the nose, and there’s not a whole lot of hop bitterness either. But, the flavor combination is very well done, and everything finishes superbly.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel on this beer is ridiculous. I was expecting something a little bit heavier with some coating abilities based on the sweetness found in the nose. What I got was something a lot lighter, but this doesn’t diminish the beers ability to take over and dominate the palate. The start and finish are amazingly smooth. I couldn’t imagine a better mouthfeel for an export stout.

Drinkability: I’m glad this is a 750ml bottle, because I think I would be highly disappointed if I could only have one glass of this. The sweetness is well done; it’s not overly cloying or stomach sickening, and the mouthfeel is smoother than anything I’ve had in a while. I’m stoked that I got the chance to try this, and I’m looking forward to sharing a bottle with friends sometime in the near future, as this beer is smooth enough that, in my opinion, even non-beer geeks would be able to enjoy it.

A - Poured out an opaque, dark, dark brown color with a one-finger light brown head. It left patchy lace.

S - It smelled sweet and malty with a good deal of chocolate notes.

T - Rich chocolate flavors with caramel, toffee and some molasses. It had a mild grassy bitterness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a warm alcohol presence.

O - This is a very tasty Foreign/Export Stout. Thanks again to drfabulous for sharing this rarity!

Bought this one a year or more ago at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Finally got around to opening it.

A: The pour is very dark brown, almost black, with a short lived tan head.

S: Quite a lot of roasted malt on the nose. Some mild to moderate coffee character with a nice dark chocolate thing going on. Maybe a touch of coffee grounds, too.

T: Licorice and dark, roasted malts start things off. Some coffee flavor, but not a ton, with a touch of bitter dark chocolate. Maybe just a touch of overripe dark fruits toward the back end.

M: Medium in body with a moderate carbonation.

O: Surprisingly straight-forward for a De Molen beer, though not necessarily within the given style.

A: Dark brown with a 2 finger beige head

S: Nutty chocolate, mellowed dark fruits, and some sweet raisin.

T: Slight tang, cacao, muddled espresso, and some bitter resinous hopping. OK in it's own right but not too well connected. Nice chocolatey finish.

M: A bit thin and highly carbonated.

D: An easy drinking FES for the ABV and some good flavors but price and slight tang would deter me from seeking this out again.

Being waiting to pop this one for a while. Had it at a tasting, then had it again at home.

Pours a 'light' black, not as thick looking as some rich stouts, but seemingly darker than many porters. Light brown head, rich and dense, slick lacing with some patches holding on.

Malty aroma, roasty with plums or prunes. Prunes probably because it's a bit sharp. Some hard toffee and caramel are noticeable.

Some coffee hits first on the taste, slightly roasted and not all that strong. Cocoa and caramel sweep it away to make room for roasted malt. Semi sweet. Hops give it a nice balance of bitter. I can see my self drinking a bunch of these.

Not exactly silky smooth. Has some bite on the end with dark fruit tartness a bit. Roasted caramel aftertaste for a short spell.

On-tap, cool, another beer to crack off the wants list, always up for a new Export Stout,

A: Pours black with a mild true white head. Good retention for sure leaving lots of lace.

S: Dark chocolate, roasted malt, solid.

T: Heavy roasted character, coffee and dark chocolate, licorice. Good flavour and certainly to style.

M: Medium to full-bodied, soft carbonation, creamy. No notice of the ~10% ABV, drinks more like 7%.

D: Rare enough style that should be made more because it's really good. Well worth a purchase. One of the better beers I've had this month.

750mL cork and caged brown glass bottle. Bottled 22 Oct 2008. Bottle 470 of 510. Thanks to my buddy Petey for this one!

Pours a thin black with 1.5 fingers of creamy tan head. Nose is full of classic milk-stout aromas, light roast coffee, a little creamy smoke note, dark chocolate. Really a pleasant smelling brew!

Palate is really light for being almost 10% abv. Sort of thin. Lots of roastiness and coffee-like flavors. Cocoa, toast, some woody notes too. Lots of flavor and a long finish for such a light-weight brew. The hops seem a little tired, though. Or maybe it's the yeast.

Notes: Lots of flavor, a serious stout. Seems like it might be a little over the hill though. Or maybe the yeast is just failing. There's something in here that reminds me of old home-brew. Tasty though I suspect it's a bit more expensive that I'd be willing to pay.

It took a few minutes to let the bottle warm up, but as it opened it let off hints of molasses, soy, even a touch of fish sauce. It really put into perspective the term, umami that so aptly describes many of the stouts I've been tasting (especially since quitting cigarettes). Meaty, earthy, salty, deliciousness.

A-pours a jet black liquid with a thinner light tan colored head.

S-notes of dark chocolate with a fair bit of slightly burnt coffee, sweet malts in back with notes of plums and dark cherries.

T-dark chocolate, hints of vanilla up front, ashy coffee, slightly burnt and bitter, malt sweetness with plums and dark cherries.

M-silky smooth and soft on the palate, medium body, slightly less than I would have enjoyed, with light carbonation but holds.

D-not the most fantastic stout, lacks balance in flavor and complexity but doesn't do anything wrong. that ashy bitter coffee flavor is something I find in a lot of foreign made stouts such as mikeller and I'm not a huge fan.
