a weird one from de molen, listed as a dubbel here, but its not like any i have had before, its almost more english, like a yorkshire stingo, with that tartness to the finish. the bottle is also ancient, not sure how old, but this beer is far from fresh. its held up well though, looking like liquid caramel in the glass and holding a very frothy head like all de molen beers seem to. it smells like tart dried fruit, an over developed yeast profile on this one, not belgian at all, but pushing funky in the wake of minor oxidation. the yeast, like so many of their beers, is what fascinates and perplexes me in this one. why is this as tart as it is, tangy like cranberry on the back end, and dry, especially for a beer styled as a dubbel. the grain might be a little one dimensional in this one, its not quite is nuanced as the belgian ones, but its hard to measure this on a style rubric of any kind, and this is defiantly its own thing. im sure it was a way different beer when it was fresh, probably still amazing just a few years ago, but this one is on its way out now i think, and while i appreciate its weirdness, i am all the more curious to try it in its original form. de molen has risen to darn near the top of the list of my favorite breweries though, and this does little to dissuade that opinion.

330ml bottle poured into tulip 30/9/12

A slightly hazy amber with a nice tight tan finger of foam that hangs around long enough to leave a couple partial rings of lace

S caramel and toffee, bready malt, floral notes, honey and a little hay, smells like an EIPA or a strong Pilsner with a butterscotch twist

T much like the nose, reminds me of an English ale with some Czech lager, I rather like it but a Dubble? I think not. Biscuit and butterscotch with some grassy floral hops, rather interesting

M on the heavy side of medium, nice carbonation with dry cereal on the finish, slightly sticky on the lips

O not at all what I was expecting, I thought this was a Winter Warmer named after Santa’s Reindeer, solid stuff whatever it is

I was expecting spices and got English malt with Czech hops? I don’t get much off the label but I liked the beer inside
