De Molen Amarillo has an extremely thick, creamy, cream-colored, frothy head, a hazy, orange-gold appearance, with numerous tight bubble stream, heavy lacing left behind, and a descending gray cloud, once the bottom contents are swished and poured into the glass. The aroma is strong and rich- hop oil, caramel, toffee, and white bread. Taste is equally bold- rich, sweet bread crust, bread, caramel, toffee, char, hop oil, bitterness, candi sugar, regular sugar, and a brandy aspect from the pronounced alcohol. Mouthfeel is heavy and oily, and De Molen Amarillo finishes mostly dry, super-sweet, alcohilic, and decently drinkable. This beer is exceptionally good and almost worth the over $6.00 a bottle that is charged for it. A great, great beer!

Drunk 6 months after bottling, label states good for 2 years after bottling.

A: Deep gold

S: Dried apricot & peach, mild yeast and some caramel; not getting the expected citrus/tropical

T: Malt-forward, but fairly bittersweet finish so not cloying.

O: Very drinkable DIPA, no alcohol burn though this is a big, rich beer. Good match for charcuterie, preferably 36m jamon iberico

330ml bottle from The York Tap, York, England (£7.00):
Hazy, dark amber. Lots of sediment. Huge, over sized, foamy white head that leaves a lot of lacing.

Lively with lots of citrus and amarillo hops although it wasn't as bitter or hoppy as I was expecting. There is some alcohol and a few lighter malts coming through alongside the caramel and sugar before rounding off with a semi-sweetness.

Stronger hops now with more pine and grapefruit coming through too on top of an intense citrus flavour and lots of bitterness. There is a few nondescript fruity flavours and a strong alcohol kick to finish things up with.

Strong on the taste buds and very bitter with a huge alcohol kick that could have been better hidden although this improved given time. Carbonation was about medium but still seemed lively and there was a big citrus tang with a sharp and dry finish that was coupled with a slightly warming feel to the beer.

Not a beer I particularly enjoyed initially but one that improved considerably once the beer had a little time to open up and breathe some. The alcohol was still a little strong throughout and the palate was quite sharp and unforgiving but it was still a decent beer.

Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a hazy orange amber with coppery tones; two finger aged ivory head with decent retention and lots of lacing. Pungent aroma of sweet caramel malt, dark and light dried fruit, light hints of aged cardboard, only hints of grassy hops; if I was smelling this blind, I'd guess it was a modestly aged American barley wine. Flavor is similar, caramel malt, not quite as sweet as the aroma, mixed stone fruits and mild dried light fruit, hints of orange and citrus. Hops component subdued, but a pleasant moderate citrus hop bitterness in the finish. Alcohol is well covered. Pleasant medium, slightly creamy body. I suspect that this is a bottle with a year of age on it, which probably has mellowed the bright hop flavors, although the typical amarillo citrus components are present. Similar to the aroma, in a blind tasting, I'd guess this was a moderately aged barley wine, but a hopped English style one. I liked this quite a bit and although it was enjoyable as it is, I would certainly jump at the chance to try a fresh one to taste brighter hop flavors. I have enjoyed every de Molen ale I've had and this is no exception.

11.2oz bottle (bottled 1/30/2012 - label says enjoy within 2 years so we're good) into a tulip. Pours a murky amber w/ a huge rocky head with chunks of sticky lace. I'd give it higher marks but beneath that beautiful head is a pretty dirty-looking beer.

Aroma is tons of dried apricots, caramel malt, and candi sugar. Not what I generally expect from an American DIPA. Smells syrupy sweet, fruity, cloying.

Taste is a little more enjoyable than the aroma. Still fruity and sweet, but the floral bitterness of the hops balances it out. Big, bold flavors here to be sure.

Mouthfeel is pretty heavy, coating.

Overall, this is certainly a unique take on a DIPA with a heavy Belgian influence. This might taste very different fresh, but I'm not inclined to find out.

Bottled on 10/12/12

A: 1/4" cream coloured head over a dark amber liquid.

S: Caramel and bready malt with mandarin orange Amarillo hops.

T: Rich caramel and bready malt with mandarin orange and orange hop flavours.

M: Medium viscosity and carbonation.

O: This beer makes me realize how Amarillo is not only orange-like, but near tropical as well.
