Acquired in March in Amsterdam. Label states "Brewed on 19 October 2010, Bottled on 21 December 2010. O.G. 1105. F.G. 1021. EBC Colour 308.9. Cech hops: Bittering hops Premiant as finalhops german Hallertau. 99.9 EBU. Recommended drinking temperature 15 degrees celcius. This beer will be good for 25 years if kept cool and dark. This batch 632 bottles from 33 cl. Bottle number: 277. 10.2% alc/vol."

Deep, dark brown with a volcanic head that settles into a nice layer of brown foam. Floating particulate obvious in the glass.

Aroma of roasted malt and a touch of smoke. Smooth and thick on the palate, like a milkshake of roasted malt, molasses and alcohol. Thick and syrupy-sweet.

A big, bold, anything but bashful beer. Yowza.

330ml bottle dated 6-4-13 poured into a snifter.

Black pour is pretty much still. A very small brown ring forms. Glass-staining. Oh De Molen.

Smells of dusty chocolate, cigar box, roast, dark fruit, molasses. Decent depth with a nice aged feel to it, but kinda muted.

Taste leans more towards the sweet side with flavors of chocolate liqueur, molasses and dark fruits. Kind of a burnt tobacco and coffee grounds thing going on. Definitely getting the brown malts as well, along with some light hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel is more or less not carbonated, which honestly isn't a huge deterrent for this beer, but it does take away from full enjoyment. Other than that, good medium heftiness, impressively hidden alcohol.

I've had a few bottles of this and I gotta say it really is a mixed bag. This one that I happened to review unfortunately was pretty 'meh' compared to others I've had. De Molen's big beers seem to either be a real treat or a missed opportunity, I wish they were more consistent. I will update scores/add notes with further experiences with this one.

A: Dark brown with plenty of small floaters in the liquid. A small dark beige head settles rather fast and leaves basically no lacings.

S: Huge roasted aromas - very powerful. It actually turns to burnt every now and then. Roasted malts, heavy roasted coffee, charred wood, spices, chocolate, faint licorice, perhaps some fruity notes. There is also noticeable hints of rather fresh hops. Light alcohol. Very powerful smell, but not very balanced due to the massive roasted character.

T: Wonderful coffee flavors - espresso, heavy roasted and almost burnt coffee, tannins. Big sweet malty backbone with a distinct roasted character. Rich notes of dark chocolate. Some licorice and dark fruits, but they don't really manage to balance the deep roasted flavors. Very faint notes of hops. The finish is powerful with a coffee-like roasted bitterness, some alcohol, spices and lingering notes of general roasted flavors.

M: The body is full, but kind of light compared to some other examples of the style. Quite a lot of carbonation as well making the beer seems rather lively. Towards the end, it gets a little smoother.

D: I really liked this one, but with the richness of the roasted flavors of coffee and malts, it's rather demanding. So it's definitely a sipper. Would absolutely like to try it again, and since I have another one in the cellar, I will.

Batch 171

Holy crap! This is an insane beer! Opening the bottle, the foam began to rise from the neck. A quick pour into the chalice brings a billowing brown head that quickly topples the glass. Trying to inhale the foam, I get choked up because of the power of the beer.

The beer is as black as possible with no penetrating light. The loosely knit bubbles of the head retain well, lace well, and leaves legs on the sides of the glass. An ideal look for a stout.

After the beer settles a bit, it gives up huge aromas of espresso, bitter cocoa, grassy hops, charred woods, light platics, and rich roasted malts. Low on esters or any other complexities, this beer is intimidating to the nose.

Severe flavors of all-things-burnt: cocoa beans, coffee grounds, charred timbers, and a light ashy flavor dominates the glass. Hops try to combat the malts and cannot stand up to the maltiness; but they do give a much needed repreive from all the roasted character. Burnt currants, figs, nuts, dates, and berries are light but rise as the beer warms.

Aggressive and at times, harsh in the texture. Fusal alcohols give a cough-syrup mouthfeel that will undoubtedly take time to mellow out. A wood-like tanning astringency also hinders the mouthfeel a bit. Large, rounded, and thick, this beer is kind of a bully. (1.035 FG?, 1.115 OG? Are you kidding me?) Big time hop bitterness further emphasize the dry and astringent finish. (99.9 EBU? Seriously?)

The batch that I have is a year old. The bottle suggests that this beer can age for 25 years. I believe it will take nearly all that to properly round out.

Poured into a snifter jet black with a tight sticky deep beige head that held thru the duration of the glass.French roast coffee and bitter chocolate mainly in the nose,as it warms a sweet shot of alcohol fruitiness comes into play.Highly roasted on the palate with some dark fruit-like sweetness,mocha flavors are quite big wich was to be expected.It's a very good imperial stout although it doesn't have any one thing that jumps out at ya,still it's great for the style.

This was opened up at a March tasting with Tony, I'm finally getting around to transcribing my notes.

75cL bottle with a bottled on date on September 18th 2008. Bottle number 159/570. Poured into a snifter.

It poured a deep black with a nice mocha head that lingers for a while before settling down.

The first thing that hits me is the lack of sweetness that other RIS' have of a similar strength. It's actually quite a refreshing change of pace. The smells that are present are strong bitter chocolate and some straw/grain notes but not nearly as roasty as I'm used to.

The bitterness is very evident in this beer. Paired with the bitterness are a ton of roasty bordering on burnt malt with a ton of bitter chocolate flavors. There is a little medicinal alcohol taste on the back end and that is the only flavor I'm not liking on this stout.

This beer is very full bodied and I'm very surprised by the final gravity reading on the bottle that this beer appears so dry and be light on the tongue to me. Reading the bottle beforehand I was expecting a thick sweet syrup of a beer. Due to this perceived dryness I thought drinkability was above average for the style.

Found at some random-ass place in Rome by the Pantheon called Baguetteria del Fico.
Wife wanted the De Molen Tasputin but they were out and the recommended this and must say, was a very good recommendation.
Poured from a bottle into a pilsner glass. Not ideal but still better than from the bottle. Poured a deep brown/black, not the least bit translucent and no head to speak of.
Tons of chocolate!! Flavor and nose. Very tasty!
Got better and better as it warmed and was sad that it ended.
Not sure ill ever see this in the states but if I do, imma grab a few.

Wow, I mean, WOW. Pours jet black, opaque, with a small ring of brown bubbles for a head. No lacing (in my tulip glass). Aroma of baker's chocolate, chocolate cake, and fudge, along with that awesome smell of a cigarette when it is first lit. Tobacco, leather, and big time alcohol in this RIS. Low-lying, silky, and heavy on the tongue, this one delivers. Long, tart, robust finish. More roasty chocolate, dark chocolate, and burnt coffee up front. More tobacco, like chewing bourbon-soaked Red Man. The label touts Hallertau hops,and they truly come through in the back. This is one big, bitter bad-ass RIS, and I am so happry I dropped $20 on it. Killer beer.

Black as night with no head. This has very little visible carbonation activity and leaves nearly no lace down the glass.

Incredibly aromatic beer with lots of roast, coffee beans, rich dark chocolate, and a strong ash/burnt/smoke component as well.

The roast and chocolate are dominant in the flavor along with a mild coffee component. The ash character isn't a distraction though there is a strong, boozy element as well. Tasty and complex--changes as it warms.

Medium to full mouthfeel, a bit oily, and very little carbonation.

An incredibly aromatic and flavorful beer, but I wish it had some more bubbles.

Pours a little lighter than black, a thick and viscous dark brown liquid with a creamy hazel-colored foam.

The nose is big and brooding, rich and velvety dark chocolate with butterscotch and vanilla. Not much of coffee comes through, it reminds me more of dark roasted nuts, molasses and hops, which gives it a nice balance with mostly pine breezing through.

The flavor is big and packs a punch, more bitterness and coffee notes here than on the nose. The alcohol gives it an Irish Coffee-like character which is not at all a bad thing, if you know what I mean! The chocolate, caramel and herbal hop flavors linger on the tongue for well over a minute, this is one to savor slowly as a dessert, or by itself if that's how you roll.

All in all very smooth, very delicious and memorable.

Hazy brown in color. Got a little roast in the beginning, which was nice. But then that faded and what was left was sweet and unbalanced. Maybe a bad batch.

Bottle purchased from Five Points Bottle in Athens, GA.

Pours black with a very thin layer of tan foam on top. The head recedes into a thin ring around the glass leaving almost no lacing but some decent legs.

Smells of heavily roasted malts with hints of dark chocolate and char. Also present are mild amounts of dry oak.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Strong roasted malt flavors kick things off with hints of char and tobacco. Midway through the sip the flavor profile sweetens a bit with the addition of dark chocolate. The sip dries out a bit near the end with hints of woodiness. The ending is solidly bitter.

Mouthfeel is OK. It's got a nice thickness however the carbonation is almost non-existent.

Drinkability is good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall I thought this was a well done beer but for the price I'd have thought the carbonation would be a bit more consistent. Still, it's worth a shot if you're willing to spend the money to find out for yourself.

Bottled 9/08, brewed about a year earlier.

750ml corked and caged brown bottle poured into a GLBC snifter.

A: Pours pitch black, no light. Huge frothy head on the pour. Nice retention, holding at a fat skim. Good lacing.

S: Great aroma. Deep, complex roasted aroma. Some bitter chocolate mixed in but there's a more dominant smooth, creamy, rich milk chocolate. Healthy dose of coffee. Fresh baked cookies and cookie dough. Some light, whiskey like aroma in the back. Fucking awesome.

T/M: More of the same in the taste. Very complex roast, some bitterness from that. More of the coffee and bitter chocolate play in the back of the rich, milk chocolate and fresh baked soft cookies. Alcohol is there but smooth and complex. Body is about full with very high carbonation that makes it feel almost airy... over carbonation from infection?

D: Big ABV and complex but damn is this tasty. I have to force myself to take my time. This could age beautifully.

A- Jet Black. zero head. doesn't look real think.

S - Chocolate, roasted malt.

T- Excellent. Chocolate really comes thru. sweetness is very nice. not too sweet either. Almost a fudge taste. Barely taste the 10.2ABVs.

M- medium viscosity. coats mouth decently.

O- Very very good. At $14 i probably won't get this again. but cut that price in half i would.

750ml caged and stubbornly corked bottle, 10.0% ABV. Hell and Damnation, eh? That's a tall order for this style, I would suggest at the outset.

This beer pours a solid black abyss, with slight basal cola highlights, and a rising tower of frothy, tightly foamy, and somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves some randomly splattered honeycombed lace around the glass as it slowly slips away.

It smells of roasted caramel malt, saltwater taffy, bittersweet chalky cocoa, musty packaged nuts, a softly earthy peatiness, dried cherries and prunes, subdued leafy hops, and a twinge of booziness. The taste is more big toasty caramel/toffee malt, a capably abetting dark chocolate and coffee combo, some rising anise notes, mildly sour black fruit, a bit of charred ash, and overwhelmed earthy, somewhat musty hops. No sign of that big 20-proof booze yet.

The carbonation is pretty laid back, the body full, fairly rich, and really quite smooth, with just a slight, niggly, inconsequential astringency that has to be mentioned for completeness. It finishes well off-dry, the singed caramel, hefty chocolate and dark fruit still prominent in all their integrated goodness.

A rather impressive RIS, the inherent flavours big, more than ably-meshed, and possessing the charm to practically taunt you to have another swig. Toss in the perennially and shockingly absent alcohol, and this offering's name crystallizes into a locus of misunderstanding - this should be called Heaven & Hell, but I hear that name's unfortunately already played out. C'est la vie, I guess.

A - Pours pitch black in the glass, no foam what so ever. Maybe something wrong?

S - So much chocolate, wood, raisins, dark fruit, coffee. The first sniff yields tons of chocolate syrup and coffee; however heavily roasted malt, charred wood quickly take over and a light sweetness is also noted.

T - Roasted malt, charred wood and heavily roasted coffee, cocoa and burned raisins also present. What a complexity!
There is an odd brown sugary sweetness just before the bitter, dry finish. Is there any alcohol in there?

M - Full body, but not as thick as I expected. Slightly oily with ultra light and smooth carbonation.

O - Great RIS, I will most certainly have this again!

Bomber from Bierkoenig. Pours opaque black, it looks thick, and topping white head that stays put. Aromas of roast, coffee, chocolate but not overally so. Taste has the roast, the chocolate,after the get through the hop bitterness which is there but you cannot put a finger on which they are. Very drinkable, this is strong stuff, even with food.

I get mostly dark chocolate and alcohol on the nose.

Wowza. Big hit of alcohol right up front. Followed by dry dark chocolate and some well roasted coffee beans. Boozy throughout, like a triple Irish coffee. Finished with a bit of alcohol soaked fruit. Can't analyze for too long or it burns your tongue off.

Mouthfeel and strength aren't working well for me, quite harsh.

Bottled a few months ago, definitely needs a few years on it. Might turn out pretty tasty.

To me this is a snifter beer, plus it's a fun word to say. Sadly all I had was a pint glass, I had great company so that counter balances it completely.

I went back to my former home of Columbia, Mo for the weekend and along the way I stopped by Gomer's Independence to acquire some awesome beer; once of which was Hel & Verdoemenis. I bought this because the $22 price tag was just as exciting to me as the limited release, this beer was 1 of 1094, I had to have it. Plus, this was amends to a friend of mine, who our summer plans were to visit each other in their respective town and show them the other the merits of living in either, her Saint Louis, MO me Kansas City, MO (KC-MO, Whoooo). Sadly our summer plans fell apart, but this beer was a backbone of a great evening.

I brought this over to her apartment and after enjoying the hell out of some Fantome we opened this. H&V is a beer that cannot be enjoyed under normal circumstances, this is a beer that Denny Crane and Alan Shore would have enjoyed on a their balcony at the end of another amazing episode; which is what we did. Sitting on her balcony, people watching, enjoying some beer I began to reflect on my former home, my college town and miss the fuck out of it. This is where the song comes into play. Sitting on the balcony drinking an imperial stout that had zero head, and no carbonation, pitch black as dark, I began to look at how limited my experiences in Columbia were as to this beer. How there was much more life their I want to live, but I was glad for it's fleeting moments, because of it's exclusivity, I enjoyed it the most.

A wonderful smell emerged from the glass, a complex coffee scent that would make the biggest coffee nerds turn their heads, a rich chocolate scent, maybe some raisins, with a hint of smoke and alcohol, I was enchanted. This was like walking onto Mizzou's campus for the first time without my parents. A sense I loved, but wasn't overwhelming. I could get used to this. As time passed, it warmed up and more complexity was added to the flavor hitting your nose.

I love balconies. They add a sort of dynamic to whatever happens, from sitting and reading, to drinking, to simply playing around on your computer as the sun falls. This beer and the irreverent dialogue that follows is 1 in 1094. The odds may not seem that great, but when you're the 1, that's the best odds that could happen to you in the world. The taste of this beer was everything that the look may have lacked and the nose eluded to. This rich, robust chocolate flavor along with the coffee, which dazzled my roommates roommate (who dislikes beer) was perfectly balanced and it left such an amazing after taste that you were happy to empty the pockets for this beer; the smoke was there as was the alcohol itself which burned a little, but in a good way. I may have noticed some plum or other sort of fruit along those lines in the beer. It was an absolute joy to drink.

The mouthfeel was sadly weak, like my degree. The mouthfeel was watery, weak and it lacked character. As you drank more and as it warmed up it became clearer why it was good and why you were glad you spent the time with it, it became better with age.

Drinkablity seems like a laugh in all honesty as there's so few out in there in the world. There may be others like it, but there's truly so few. It's expensive, but as you drink you realize it's worth the investment. You can hold onto it for twenty-five years (as it says on the label) and it still may be good. It will never be as good as when you were with it the moment you bought it, that evening enjoying it with your closest friends at that time. Twenty-five years is a long time from now, priorities and you will change by then, enjoy it the moment you buy it (it's more than enough of a reason to open it) with you friends on a balcony - don't drink this alone - there's only you, your friends and now, your memories can come later.

A: The rich tan head sits for a good amount of time before retreating on a solid black body. The server even mention that she had never seen a more bold, black body on a beer. None the less, pitch black, with a slight reddish transparency around the rim while drinking and looking through the light. The lacing is left is huge quantities that you cannot even see into the glass after.
S: Notes of espresso, while chocolate makes it presence on the aromas finish. A solid and constant aroma of liquorish.
T/M: Very sweet on the front with a huge malt bill, the rolling mouthfeel brings a layering of flavors, Starting with bitter chocolate and then moves to a candy liquorice, a smoked malt profile on the body. Turning to the lingering finish, the dominance of alcohol. The full bodied brew holds a nice and chewy mouthfeel that is very filling.
D: This is one of those brew where your damned if you do and damned if you don't. And if your damned if you don't then pity you, because this brew is one of those must try for the experience. Nothing that can be sessioned by any means, but the flavors are out of this world when combined with the body of this brew,

appearance: standard de molen label with loads of information and a red-waxed top, served in hotel water glass, rich dark mahogany body, creamy chocolate cap with perfect retention

smell: rich dark chocolate, loads of hops present...really nice

taste: sinfully good - waves of dark chocolate, a touch of mint, aggressively hopped - glad i got to this one in a relatively fresh state. rich roasted malts, nice bitter finish - a world class stout indeed

mouthfeel: creamy, but a little heavy of the foamy feeling

drinkability: good

Poured into a snifter. Pours super over carbed. Head was at least 3 inches. Took a while to dissapated to a one finger. Ok lacing. Super black with tan head.

Aroma is nice. Nice and roasty. Bit of caramel and dark fruits. Kinda yeasty.

Taste is nice. Carbonation bites your tongue but the nice caramel and dark chocolate notes come through after that then bitter roast in the finish. Your left with almost a chocolate covered espresso bean taste in your mouth.

Mouthfeel is super high carb but the bubbles are fine and the taste is smooth.

Overall a very good Russian imperial. Would buy it again but not often because of the $10 per basically a 12oz bottle is a bit much.

Appearance - Black body with a nice khaki head. Nice thick collar. Swirls nicely with a thick layer of bubbles on the side of the glass.

Smell - Roasty. Bitter chocolate and strong coffee. Molasses comes through, too. A little boozy.

Taste - Even roastier than the aroma hints. Lots of bitter chocolate and coffee. It's the most dominant flavor. The finish gives just a hit of molasses and toffee. A lingering sweetness balances a strong bitter aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Just a little bit too sweet in the finish. It balances the roast well, but it lingers a long time. Well carbonated. Maybe too much.

Overall - Nice. Lacking in some complexity, but a nice experiment in intense roasted malt flavors.

Pours a near black color with brown highlights. The tan head is short and creamy; leaves a nice frothy ring when it settled.

The aroma is of roasted malt with a twang of acidic fruit. Deep prune aroma with some carob. Some woody notes. A bit too sharp in the aroma.

The flavor is of a smooth roasted malt and milk chocolate. Some mild vanilla and caramel provide some sweetness. There is a subtle dark fruit/acidic note but not nearly as strong as in the aroma. Like a dark chocolate and caramel candy bar.

The feel is ultra smooth and creamy. Sweet and lightly bitter on the palate; some light tart notes. Finishes a bit sticky.

I had no idea what style of beer this was until I read some reviews. The aroma lead me one way but the flavor was of a sweet smooth stout. Very flavorful.

(12oz bottle with red wax). Bottle 497/2040. Bottled June 2010. Pours dark brown with loads of yeast and tan head. Aroma has lots of chocolate that I can smell it from a distance. Also getting some anise, leather and wet dog. Taste is roasty bitter with a sweet malt backbone. The alcohol is very noticeable at first sip. Full bodied and slick texture. Finish is dry and roasty. Fairly hoppy. A nice impy and one I'd probably prefer with some age on it.
