12 oz bottle that gushed at ton (more than other beer thus far), lost a good 1/3 to the drain from gushing. This may have been from it being on two recent planes.
A: Jet Black, huge head that take a long time to fade.
S: Coffee, chocolate, lots of booze (too much).
T: Coffee, roasted malt and booze.
M: Alcohol, chocolate, very strong distinct taste.
O: this is a very hard beer to classify. On the one hand its obviously very complex, but it's not great maybe I just don't like this style all that much. Very, very strong pungent smell, almost too strong for a beer.

Poured from a 11.2 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. Date on bottle reads Dec 5th, 2011.

Appearance: Pours nearly pitch black with a moderate amount of carbonation. Huge tan head that takes up half of the glass before slowly fading to a thinner creamy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: A big dark aroma that is very smoke and peat driven. Dark roasted malts with a strong scent of smoke and peat. Hints of dark bitter chocolate, coffee, burnt toast, caramel, toffee, biscuit, and yeast. Big hints of molasses and anise licorice spicing. Subtle hints of dark raisin, fig, cherry, and prune. Light hints of earthy and grassy hops. The smoked malt, peat, and chocolate stand out the most.

Taste: Follows the nose with a dark malty taste driven by smoke and peat. Dark roasted malts with a big taste of smoke and peat along with good notes of dark chocolate, coffee, toast, burnt caramel, toffee, yeast, grains, and biscuit. Sweet taste of molasses. Licorice taste from some anise. Undertones of dark dried fruit with notes of dark cherry, raisin, prune, and fig. Very subtle earthy hop presence. A very good smoked and peated malt taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Very creamy and smooth. Kind of thin for an imperial stout. Alcohol heat is light.

Overall: A really good smoky stout. It may lack a little in body, but the dark smoke and peat flavors are really good.

Dec. 5 2011 on the shelton brothers label on the back, not sure what the date means.

Pours an absolutely gorgeous jet black with 2 fingers of small bubbled light tan head.

Lots going on in the nose. Smokey, chocolatey, woodsy and lots of roasted grains.

Taste is more of the same. Smoke definitely dominates but isn't totally overpowering. Just a touch of alcohol warmth, exactly what you want in a RIS.

Mouthfeel is very smooth and ever so slightly creamy. Definitely a sipper but relatively easy drinking for the ABV (my bottle said 10%)

Overall this is a solid RIS, especially if you like a touch of smoke. Glad I picked it up, might get another one at some point to try with a bit more age on it.

A - Jet Black. No light shines thru. Small white head.

S - Heavy smoke and roast flavor. small traces of chocolate.

T - Wow. Serious smoke. Dislike very much.

M - Medium viscosity. alcohol stings the tongue a bit.

O - Will never buy again. Heavily smoked beers are not for me.

Recommend drinking temperature 16 ˚C.

Beer poured from 18 cL bottle into wine glass at 18 ˚C.

A - Very dark (349 EBC), has a nice brown head that doesn't vanish.

S - Aromas of chocolate, espresso and of course roasted malts, complex.

T - Espresso and whiskey notes, well balanced.

M - Unlike some other beers by De Molen it has just the right amount of carbonation.

O - Just like the other stouts by De Molen it's heavy
and complex, but more balanced and better carbonated that the average one.

Bottle #267. Pours thick black,with black head as the De Molen RIS seem to do. Hoppy aromas. This one is above-average mouthfeel, it is hoppy,some bittersweet chocolate,roast, and in the finish, a hit of smokey peat. All well-integrated. I did it, I drank it all.

Bottle, poured into tall pint glass. Smell is more faint than other RIS I've had. Malts, peats, unusual aromas. Taste is just as unexpected. A sweetness along with expected dark overtones of roasted malts, coffee and cocoa. Alcohol is prevalent. As beer warmed that became worse. Very interesting flavor, but not a fav. Worth trying this beer.

Pours a thin black or dark brown with light edges and a huge foamy khaki-colored head. Smells of phenolic smoke immediately reminding me of peat smoke. Bit of a peppered beef jerky aroma underneath. As it warms, and I acclimate to the smokiness, campfire-roasted marshmallows and milk chocolate notes emerges. Flavor is not so intense as the nose would suggest. There is a roasty, yet smooth maltiness, almost a bit chewy that stands up to the spicy peat. I can pick up hints of things like tootsie roll-like chocolate, caramel and dark chocolate pot de crème, but the peat smoke is still the dominant note. The peat does not, however, overpower this hefty brew overall.

On tap @ Monk's Cafe Mad Monday

A- pours pitch black with a creamy off-white colored head that leaves lots of good lace behind. Smells of smoky peat moss, woodsy & earthy, chocolate and fresh band-aide. Taste is smoky peat with woodsy notes, sweet chocolate & smoked meat with a dry smoky finish. Medium carbonation and body with s upper smooth and creamy mouthfeel and finish. The peat moss works well with the base beer, as it does not overpower and mixes in some nice woodsy notes as well. Definitely not for everyone, but worth the try.

Appearance. Pours a deep dark brown, black in the glass with two fingers of tan head.

Smell. Smokey peat and dark roasted malts, just a little molasses and maybe some dark fruits as well, but the smoke is pretty predominant.

Taste. Again very smokey and peaty with some tobacco and tar. There's also a bit of dark malt, molasses, and maybe a trace of dark fruit.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body, very light for the abv and it actually works well. Medium-strong carbonation.

Overall. A very interesting beer that doesn't really conform to any style. High abv, lighter body, smokey as hell, and some big stout characteristics ...very interesting indeed.

A: Black in body with a very large and dense brown head.

S: Dark roasted malts, with a nice hit from the peated malt. A bit of a bready smell followed by licorice.

T: Dark bitter chocolate and black licorice dominate. Followed by roasted malts, a touch of smoke, and an earthy bitterness at the finish. There is almost a hint of sea air at the finish. As it warms a bit the sweetness comes a bit more to front.

M: The body is thick, the carbonation is fine, and fairly abundant. While there seems to be plenty of carbonation, it doesn't seem over carbed. The finish leaves a little bit of a coating.

O: Overall I like it. It certainly favors a more aggressive style over the overly sweet and smooth one. I'd like to imagine heavily scarred men, wearing bits of dead animals, and smelling of pine and earth would drink this around a campfire while eating bits of dead animals that were not fit for wearing.

2011 vintage (10% abv):

Absolutely gorgeous looking stout... cola brown to pitch black with mountains of medium brown froth that cling to the glass... quite the photo friendly beer this is.

Rich, earthy peat moss aromas explode from the glass. Fudge and brownies beneath that with a smooth sense of caramel and toffee as well. Very smooth given both the alcohol content and the headlining peat character. A touch of dry smoke but mainly just that dirty, grassy moss profile.

Bitter chocolate on the palate, rice hulls, big dry peat moss flavors from start to finish, the finish is incredibly pronounced - an arid moss bit, some drying alcohol and oily coffee beans... bitter. It's a slow drinker but delicious indeed.

I'd love to try a barrel aged variant someday.

This is a very peaty stout. Classified as a Russian Imperial, but it sure reminds me of Scotland. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Nice head and lacing; very dark. Aroma is smoky, and the peat dominates the taste.

The flavor is very strong. My 8 ounce pour (on tap) was almost more than I wanted.

Not your everyday stout, that's for sure, but it's a great change of pace.

Poured from a 330ml bottle. Pours a deep black with big brownish head. The smell --smoky, meaty, peaty -- is the first giveaway that this is an exceptional beer. It was brewed with heavily peat-smoked malt , which gives it a really robust flavour, as well. It's all about smoked meat, molasses, peat and big Scotch flavours. But they are so well integrated and go together so nicely that you can truly sip this like a fine single malt.

Drank from my Stella Tulip

A - Pours a deep deep Ebony colour witha very tight tanned head that just doesn't move at all.

S - Aromas of chocolate, vanilla and roasted malts, and slightly medicinal aromas, very complex indeed.

T - Massive earthy notes and some Whiskey barrel flavours that take over before giving way to a nice balanced vanilla/chocolate flavour. The finish is roasted coffee and smokey malts.

M - Full bodied with minimal carbonation.

O - This is a massive stout and will provide you with a taste experience to remember

On-tap. Snifter glass. Enjoyed on jan´13. Black color, tan froth & fairly good retention crown. Coffee & fudge chocolate notes, roasted malt aroma & licorice candies to the nose. Roasted malt & pepper flavor, bitter/sweet mouthfeel. Medium to dense body. Moderate to low carbonation. Burnt chocolate & licorice touch are shown in a long finish. Dry coffe on the aftertaste. ABV well hidden.

750ml bottle purchased from de Bierkonig in Amsterdam. Poured from bottle into tulip. Sampled 10.23.10. Reviewed from notes.

A - poured solid black with thick, glistening eggshell colored head; left some consistent lacing
S - smooth aromas of leather and medium roast; maybe some tobacco
T - nice bold, dark malt flavors up front with a slightly crisp finish; some french roast linger
M - thick body but not too heavy or syrupy; nice balanced RIS with interesting apple crispness at the end; would love to have again, and again

Picked this up at the beer store at the De Molen Brewery. Lost about a quarter of the bottle as it was a gusher when I opened it. Pitch black pour with two finger tan head with great retention and lacing. Huge smokey, roasty nose with a ton of peat and hints of mocha and coffee and a touch of burnt electronics. Thankfully the peatiness and burnt electrical doesn't really show up in the taste. It's totally dominated by the smoke and dark chocolate with hints of espresso, oak, tobacco, alcohol, and just a touch of vanilla. Mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, thick and chewy with a nice bitter finish. If it weren't for the smell, this would be a really great beer. I am not a fan of peaty or smoked beers, and this beer has all those characteristics in the smell. The rest of the beer is solid and enjoyable.

18 cl bottel poured into my cantillon tulip glass ,

A : light dark brown head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Black color.

A: complex smoke, wood, chocolate, roasted malt and liquorish.

T: Quite strong and balanced taste. Full bodied with a soft carbonation and dry light alcoholic texture. Moderated to heavy sweet and mild bitter flavor. Lingering smoke and sweet liquorish like finish.

M : smooth and creamy

D: alcohol is present but soft , soft carbonation , very drinkable

The beer is black with brown tones, a high brown head that settles slowly and leaves some lacing. Good curtains.

Smelling much of roasted malt, toast, dark roasted coffee beans, sweet licorice, it also has much vinous and fruity tones.

Starting sweet, dark chocolate, dried fruits, sherry, bitter coffee and cocoa beans.

Low carbonation, small soft bubbles, a huge body, an oily syrup feeling, a dry finish.

Well done, well balanced, much to discover while sipping.

poured into an Elysian pumpkin fest baby snifter. Had this side by side with the barrel aged version.

A: pours a deep rich black with some dark brown lacing, a little bit of carbonation is apparent in the pour.

S: lots of smokey peaty malt, like nothing i have ever smelled in a beer before.

T: peat peat and more peat. its good but overwhelming and there is a bit of a rauchbier flavor to this beer simply from all the peaty malt that was used.

M: very nice mouthfeel with the alcohol very well integrated just the right amount of carbonation.

overall very good though I enjoyed the barrel aged version more. It is a very interesting beer and definitely worth trying once.

A- Pours a dark chocolate color, nearly black with a finger of creamy tan head.

S- Smoky and earthy aroma, has a lot of roasted malt in the background with coffee and chocolate.

T- Roasted malt flavors dominate. Definitely some smoked malt, gives a nice smoked flavor. Peaty, earthy flavor meshes well with very dry, roasted coffee and chocolate flavors. Some fig in there also, just a hint of booziness and warmth at the end. Sweetness is minimal.

M- Medium-bodied, smooth creamy feel, finishes dry.

O- A very cool RIS, I like the very roasted and smoky character. I'm a big fan of stouts that are a bit on the dry side, if I could find this more easily I would definitely buy more of it.

Pours a black coke like color with almost no carbonation or head.

Smells of an old used chimney.

Taste is smokey, burnt, some alcohol. Burnt flavor linger for a long time. A bit sweet up front.

Good thing about this beer is the flavor and just the right touch of alcohol. Bad things are the oiliness and lack of carbonation.

Bottle says it will stay good for 25 years, I think aging would help this beer immensely.

Thank God for beer and whisky ! And when they use peated whisky malt for beer, yummie ! ! !

I have to admit I have soft spot for 'De Molen' since I discovered 'Hel en Verdoemenis' en de 'Black Damnation' serie (in collab w/ De Struise). And when I saw this one on the shelf @ my friend's place, I knew I had to try it out ...

Hemel en Aarde (Heaven & Earth) pours a thick, black liquid in the glass. The room gets filled with nice smokey tones. The smokey tones are a bit overwhelming for the nose and cover up the natural aromas you would expect from an Imperial Stout. But as soon as the tastebuds come in contact with the fluid, you know why they call this beer 'heaven'. Dark chocolate with a herbal undertone, nicely balanced with a hint of licorice which continous in the aftertaste, nicely surrounded by the smokey flavour from the peated malt.

This beer deserves a place in my 'private' collection so I'll have to visit the neighbours in the North again.
