Beautiful from start to finish, beginning with a lovely coal-black pour with a rich, fluffy brown head that lasts forever, with lacing that's downright difficult to wash off the glass.

The nose is incredible: coffee and chocolate lead the way, with vanilla, spices, sweet molasses, dark fruits, malted milk...and then you take that first sip, and all the promise of the aroma is fulfilled. The coffee flavor that leads the flavor rush may be the best I've ever tasted in a beer, backed up with rich dark chocolate, molasses, vanilla, plums, cherries, a hint of spices (cinnamon, nutmeg bourbon and rum on the mid palate. The alcohol is essential invisible; only an occasional warmth in the throat hints at the 11%. On the finish, most of the flavors just...persist, dominated by the coffee, chocolate, molasses, and vanilla, with a final whiff of spices at the end. In the mouth, this is a dream: rich, but creamy with its perfect carbonation keeping things dangerously drinkable. Best coffee stout I've had. (1,059 characters)

bottle found locally the other day! enjoyed from a de struise black damnation taster.

a - brew pours a watery black with an overly frothy head. big creamy head, super foamy. big streaky lace.

s - nose is burnt chocolate, belgian yeast, and gourmet coffee. the yeast gives it a crisp almost vanilla thing over the top.

t/m/o - big creamy stout, very dessert liqour like. again, the belgian yeast sets this off and gives it something really unique. cross between a belgian strong dark ale and a stout. feels like it is not what it once was, but still tasty. the vanilla notes are nice on the coffee. the coffee is on the lighter side. glad i picked this up. (668 characters)

i have become a colossal fan of de molen recently. i have always been a fan, but i have recently really appreciated their beers in the context of others, just so different and high quality all the time. this one is great, found at hazels in boulder, 2012 edition with slightly different specifics on the label. the pour is crazy, its super bubbly, more than any other big dark beer i have seen, reminds me of the engles, that foamed like a mad man, but this is a little more under control, just hard to pour, and the bubbles are huge and light brown. there is some yeast sediment chunked up in the beer too, but they settle fast. the nose is odd, less coffee for me, but there is some age on this one for sure. i smell green pepper, even an ancho chili in here, with some coffee and dry cocoa, a cool nose to say the least. like all of their beers ive had, there is a really neat yeast complexion in here too, short of doughy, but raw in a similar way. the roast on the malt is intense, and there is a sweeter element in here too. the coffee is rich and earthy, and while it doesnt still smell much like it, it certainly is there in the taste, although im not sure i could pick out the special and pricey kopi coffee in this through the beer, which i am okay with, its beer before coffee. notes of raisin and tobacco in there too, no oxidation at all even over time, and a very very lively mouthfeel for the style, totally unique. this is exquisite beer, and it makes me want to go out and find all the de molen beers i possibly can in the market, one of a kind again from these guys! (1,584 characters)

Bottled 4/18/12, poured into a snifter

A- pours pitch black with a light khaki colored one-finger head that retains nicely long after the pour, a bit of lacing left behind

S- for being two years old, I'm surprised how prevalent and 'fresh' the coffee aroma is. Fresh dark roasted coffee bean mixes with dark bitter-sweet chocolate, the combination reminds me of a cafe mocha. Also picking up a bit of smoky malt, with some earthy and herbal hop notes

T- dark chocolate up front mixes with some smoky malt with hints of molasses. Sweet cream mixes with an earthy bitterness and a bit of a spicy pepper kick. Bitter coffee hits the mid-palate with Huge coffee notes continue on the linger that tastes like a fresh roasted cup of joe.

M- medium body with biting & bubbly carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues to the finish, warming alcohol lingers

O- a little bit of heat added another dimension that I'm not sure came from the high abv, or an actual adjunct ingredient. As expected with the Kopi Loewak coffee, it takes center stage of the beer with a unique freshness, even after setting in the bottle for over two year. Carbonation was a bit too bubbly and biting, but overall a fine sipper (1,212 characters)

A - It is black as the ace of spades. It is topped with three inches of tan head.

S - I smell some coffee and yeast.

T - The taste is coffee and cream. The coffee has undoubtedly mellowed over the two years it spent in the bottle, but it is still enough to make it taste great.

M - Full

O - This is a nice coffee stout. The coffee flavor and aroma has held up well for two years. Now I want to find a fresher bottle. I enjoyed it thoroughly. My bottle was brown and not green like the picture. (551 characters)

Bottled 4/18/12. No problem forming a head; super fizzy. I get black coffee, dark chocolate, some smoke, raisin, and maybe a bit of port wine in the nose. Really nice coffee flavors, some good dark chocolate, caramel. A tiny hint of bitterness, and maybe just a touch of alcohol on the end, but really well hidden otherwise. It hasn't warmed as much as I'd like it to, but pretty tasty so far as I write this. (409 characters)

Bottle purchased from the Craft Beer Store in Hamburg, dated around January '13, purchased and poured into a pint glass on 2/25/14.

A: Night black with thick tan head.

S: This beer smells like a strong cup of black, cold coffee fresh from the fridge.

T: This beer has the strongest coffee notes of any Coffee Stout I've had before. Not much alcohol taste for the big ABV. Finishes with a slight spiciness.

M: Nice carbonation, thick and smooth.

O: A great beer if you like coffee because that is what surely will dominate the palate. Didn't know anything about this particular coffee before purchasing the beer. Happy to have had the beer, especially now that De Molen will not be brewing this beer anymore. Such a strong coffee character, almost wished I would've saved it for breakfast. (793 characters)

Bottle from a friend in Alberta. Bottled April 2012.

A - Pours black with a giant fluffy beige head. Wicked lace from the giant head left two fingers of retention and awesome lace. No complaints here.

S - Aggressive coffee, earthy. Good but really basic to some degree.

T - Strong coffee, earthy, dark fruit, lot's of roast. Sweetness present, roast, some alcohol. Interesting and more complex than aroma. Tasty stuff.

M - Good carbonation, full body, tasty coffee and dark fruit finish. Nice.

O/D - This is a hella coffee stout. While the aroma was a little bit one dimensional, the palate came through much more complex while retaining the intense coffee flavour. (672 characters)

A: Black with a thick foamy mocha head.

S: Coffee, amazing coffee, in the nose. Yes roasted malt, yes chocolate, but COFFEE is the deliciousness that is the nose.

T: Roasted malt, good coffee notes with dark chocolate in the finish. Quite dry. Delicious.

M: Full bodied not quite smooth.

O: Not the best De Molen beer, but it really makes me want to try Kopi Hel & Verdoemenis. (381 characters)

11.2oz. April 2012 bottling.
Very dark brown pour, near black. Large rocky tan head. I don't care for this as it has often linked to over carbed brews, especially from this brewer. I guess I just don't care for Belgian beer qualities in not Belgian styles.

Aroma, big coffee, but there is some molasses and sweet chocolate.

Taste, Again big coffee, a cafe mocha kind of thing. It is nice and smooth. Mild woodiness.

Very smooth and nearly creamy. Presence of heavy carbonation does not manifest itself. Solidly medium bodied. Coats well enough. Just a tad warming but nothing offensive for me. No problem drinking this one.

Really ended up being much better than I expected. Just be in the mood for a heavy coffee forward brew.
For the price it is probably only worth trying once though. (792 characters)

Consumed December 19th, 2013. Poured from a brown 330ml capped bottle dated April 18th, 2012 into a Mother Earth Brewing chalice.

Beer is very dark brown. A standard side pour results in a massive 4-finger dark biege head composed of large bubbles. Took a minute or two to die down enough to pour again. Took four pours to get all liquid into glass. When head subsides at last, it is a creamy foam that clings.

Aroma is 100% coffee.

Flavor is likewise dominated by coffee. Almost no beer character at all; what does come through is a dash of bitter chocolate. Or maybe that was coffee, too. Slight boozy note at finish. Not especially bitter.

Beer is very warming, so much so that I got a lingering warmth just from sipping the copious head - no actual liquid! Smooth, but I'd stop short of calling it "creamy". Slightly chewy. Feels a little granular, somehow...

20 months of age did little to mellow the coffee character or the alcohol. Instead, it seems to have diminished the flavors of the base beer! As a coffee stout, it succeeds, more or less. Personally, I'd rather have something a little more balanced in this realm. Still, if this is what the brewers were going for, they achieved it. (1,201 characters)

341ml bottle poured into a Big Rock snifter glass, served around 12C

The beer poured near pitch black with two fingers of light foamy head. As I opened the bottle I was treated to a woft of intense roasted coffee smell. For the uninformed, Kopi Loewak is coffee that was eaten by civets in Indonesia, and pooped out. The enzymes in their digestive tract apparently enhance the flavor of the coffee bean...

The beer smells of fantastic roasted yet mellow coffee beans, roasted malt and some sweet toffee flavor. As you take your first drink, you are treated to a sophisticated blend of coffee, dark chocolate and roasted barley, as well as some mild earthy tones and some alcohol warmth.

The product available in the province was bottled close to two years ago, which has definitely benefitted this beer. The aging has helped marry the flavors together incredibly well, while also reducing the alcohol bite of this 11.2% ABV beer.

This is an absolutely fantastic stout. I can't wait to see how this beer evolves over the years to come with the extras I bought to age (1,070 characters)

Bottle from 18/04/12. Poured into a large tulip.

Pours a rich brown-black, massive caramel coloured head that luckily got stuck on the lip of the tulip otherwise it was coming out! So I'm anticipating even if I can't really see it lots of carbonation bubbles inside... eventually dies off but does leave some decent lace. Dominating smell is right away lots of malt, but also this strange earthy acidity from the coffee but not a typical coffee smell...Taste is again similar but you really feel as if the coffee dominates this beer, though it really catches you off guard...this is not your run of the mill dark coffee stout of espresso and chocolate... this is really earthy, acidic, funky coffee.... I guess you would get that when you realize you're drinking civet digested, then pooped out coffee cherries! I certainly don't get a whole lot of chocolate in this one, just some light fruit, mild bitterness and more earthiness from perhaps the barley. Mouthfeel is pretty crazy as this one is super carbonated, not sure if there is any in bottle fermentation on this one, but regardless, not super heavy or syrupy as you'd find in big bodied imperials, some hints of alcohol but surprisingly very concealed by the carbonation that you forget this is over 11%...

Overall a very interesting beer, from what I would expect is a very unique coffee... I'm glad I got to try it and it is one of the more different but better coffee forward beers out there, but I don't think I'd drink this on a regular basis and as such am not so sad they are going to stop brewing it for ethical reasons which I think we can all totally support. So I raise my dark frothy glass to De Molen for doing the right thing! (1,702 characters)

Bottle pour at the Protest Bottle Share For LA Beer Week held at Red Carpet Wine in Glendale, CA.

Bottled 4/18/12.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and earthy, dirty coffee aromas. Taste is much the same with earthy and dirty coffee and pepper flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a high level of carbonation with a crisp and prickly mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer with an odd pepper flavor that isn't too tasty. (693 characters)

Poured this one into a snifter from a bottle I brought back from the Netherlands.

Appearance - Dark, black as the night I consumed it.

Smell - Roasty toasty malts, faint coffee notes, and I couldn't help but feel I was getting some of the mustiness all the way from the civet poop the kopi luwak (loewak) coffee beans are famous for.

Taste - a proper malty stout, though a touch bitter like espresso coffee notes, and again some mustiness.

Mouthfeel - A touch lighter/thinner than I was expecting, a bit more carbonated than the silky smooth coffee stout I was expecting.

Overall - The numbers reflect my overall opinion, even though my description calls out the few critiques I could find. First full review on BA for me, and while you won't find a bigger proponent of De Molen beers, this isn't the best one they make. Another solid offering though, utilizing the most expensive coffee in the world. (906 characters)

Poured from 11.2 oz bottle into St. Bernardus goblet.

A - Deep coffee brown pour with thick, creamy, highly-laced, taupe colored foam.

S - Roasted malts, coffee beans, a touch of chocolate and damp wood on the nose.

T - Sweet, iced coffee, dark roasted barley, a vague touch of hops.

M - A swirl of coffee oils and warm alcohols. Not syrupy or cloying, a bit more carbonation than expected.

This one was fun. It has a all the hallmarks of an imperial stout and a great coffee flavor. The extra carbonation really helped express the flavors. (545 characters)

11.2 ounce bottle, date on back label says 18/04/12. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with an inch and a half tan head that sticked around for a long time. There's also a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is very nice, the brew smells like coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, and caramel. It tastes like coffee, roasted/charred malt, bittersweet chocolate, nuts, caramel, and molasses. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's creamy and coating with high but soft carbonation. If you like coffee beers, then you really need to try this one. It's a coffee bomb! I'll have to buy another bottle the next time I come across this, I liked this one a lot. (664 characters)

330ML bottle with the classic De Molen minimalist label. Picked up at de Bierwinkel in Leiden, the Netherlands, after staring at all the beautiful foreign beers for about half an hour. It was tough to pick. Bottled 1/24/13 & consumed while staring out at Haarlemmerstraat on our last night in Europe.

Barely a hiss when the top is popped, & the pour is as dark & lifeless as a depressing as black on black, though a touch of red hope gleams through the thinnest edges. Nose is big-time bitter, a treble hook of coffee & roast sink into the olfactory factories. Nice.

Kopi Loweak is a heavy-handed coffee bomb in every sense of the word. Coffee takes the baton from the word 'go' & sprints off; there's barely any hint of a stout underneath the shroud of bitter coffee. Half of this small bottle will be quite sufficient, thank you.

Even though I'm not fond of coffee nukes & this is one of the biggest in terms of tonnage, it's still strangely appealing. Pretty good beer, but not one I'd seek out again. (1,010 characters)

2012 vintage from alelover:

'tis lively. Coffee black body with a healthy pale brown head. Spotty lacing.

Dark berries and muted coffee. Some caramel and brown sugar. Strong nose.

A bit overactive on the palate. Tingly cola flavors with red fruits and bitter coffee. It mellows out with a bit of warmth.

Pretty good. De Molen can and does do better, though. (362 characters)

Bottle dated 18/04/12

Thick, chunky, tan head sits atop a very dark brown, nearly black body. Coffee grounds, charred grains, and hints of chocolate comprise a heady aroma. Coffee, booze, bitter chocolate immediately announce their presence at first taste; sharp alcohol and bitter aftertaste. Medium-heavy body, velvety smooth on the tongue.

The coffee and ABV really come forward with this beer. Thank goodness the malt sweetness and subdued hop bitterness keep things reined in and balanced. Overall, a really nice coffee stout that hits the mark on all fronts. (566 characters)

I bought this beer at one of the best beershops in Belgium; dranken Geers in Oostakker. Bottled in januari 2013, good to drink in five years. Poured the beer in my Struise tasting chalice. Black fluid with almost no head. When i poured the beer with force i got a head for a few seconds but then it was gone, leaving a small ring in the glass.

Smell is as expected coffee. Alcohol is well hidden. Tastes like cold coffee. Not very spectacular but decent, not more than that. (475 characters)

Previously thought I drank Mout & Mocca, but I actually drank this.

My bottle was 11.2%.

Pours with absolutely ridiculous massive frothy white head. As for the beer itself; black and just gives the impression of a watery body.

Smell is sweet marshmallow, flowers (roses). Definite lactic qualities.

Taste is vanilla marshmallow, gritty coffee. Rather astringent really.

Mouthfeel is a fair bit thicker than I thought it would be considering the appearance. Actually quite nice, creamy and thick.

I'm not quite sure what I think of this beer. Was initially disappointed but I realise it's like a very milky, bitter, instant coffee. Still not blown away. (658 characters)

11.2oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottling date is marked at 4/18/12, making this just over a year old. The label advises to 'enjoy within five years'.

A: Deep brown on the pour, very close to black. Four fingers of creamy head form after a stiff pour. Retention is excellent, and a thin blanket of lacing costs the whole glass.

S: Even after a year the coffee aroma is still very prominent. It is earthy and nutty with a mild roast character. Milk chocolate and bakers chocolate. Graham cracker. Esters of plum and raspberry. Kiss of smoke, faint starchy-type smell.

T: Cola. Deep plum and currant darkfruit. Roasted malts take over with tame tastes of char, smoke, and woodiness. Bakers chocolate and black cocoa powder. Black licorice and yeasty spice. Subtle spicy alcohol. Nutty and earthy coffee flavors dominate the back end. Dry finish of yeasty spice, rich nutty coffee, and a hint of smoke.

M: The body is moderately thick. It is rich, full, and creamy, but sits lightly. The blast of prickling, fine bubbled carbonation has a lot to do with that. Very smooth. The subtle hint of alcohol warmth would never betray the 11.2% abv.

O: This one grew on me as I drank it, and the over-the-top smoothness is what really won me over in the end. A great coffee stout with a Belgian twist. (1,298 characters)

A: Pours a deep and dark brown color forming a small but persistent bubbled beige to brown head. Few spotty lacings are left in the glass

S: Very roasted with strong notes of coffee. Notes of dark chocolate and chocolate malts. Really amazing in the nose. Some alcohol is felt in the end

T: Strong roasted malts and slightly sweet upfront. Strong notes of coffee. Strong roasted malts bitterness in the end

M: Heavy molasses body. Low carbonation. Roasted malts bitterness in the aftertaste

O: Great coffee Stout. Quite good drinkability considering that it's a 11.5% ABV beer. It does not seem to be that strong (657 characters)

A: Dark brown — almost black — with a huge tan head that dissipates to a persistent 1/4 inch.

S: Lots of espresso with a solid stout backbone.

M: Thick, but surprisingly tingly.

T: Stout up front, java in the back. Coffee notes mask the alcohol flavors.

O: The Short Version: It’s a heavy stout masquerading as an iced coffee. One of the best around.

The Long Version: Kopi Luwak is shitty coffee. That is to say, Kopi Luwak coffee beans are found in cat shit. Despite where the beans come from, the beer is absolutely incredible. As far as coffee stouts go, it stacks up against all the heavy-hitters; and the lingering flavor you’re left with is unlike almost any other. It’s extremely well-balanced — especially given the alcohol content — and really drinkable. The only thing that could make it better is a nice, dry-rubbed steak. (853 characters)
