750ml corked and caged bottle poured into a matching De Molen tulip. Not 100% certain but I think this was either the 2010 or 2012 version (hard to tell, it was faint and very faded - though drink within 5 years was boldly stated.) It appears in my glasd black in color with a rich mocha colored head and a full wall of lace coating the glass.

The aroma contains almost a hint of something like peppers and roast earthy chocolate. Slight yeast derrived notes but overall dominated by the essence of roasted barley.

The taste includes aspects of bitter cocoa blending to roasty grain, coffee and earth. Hints of leather and tobacco give way to a mild dark fruity aspect like raison. Like the aroma suggested, there is a hint of something almost like peppers included.

This is a medium to full bodied brew. It is lighter to moderately carbonated. A very nice offering overall. I dont know what caused the pepper flavor (do not think that was an adjunct in this) though it was subtle and distracted just a bit from the overall dominating roasty chocolate goodness. Id drink this again if the opportunity arose.

Picked this up at a great little beer store in Arlon, Belgium, Miorge Mihoublon. This is the newer, 11.6 ABV version. Pitch black pour with a one finger caramel-colored head that faded quickly with minimal lacing. Really nice nose that's dominated by fresh roasted coffee along with hints of cocoa, tobacco, and leather. The taste mirrors the nose. Loads of roasty coffee along with hints of wood, cocoa, tobacco, leather, and some subtle licorice. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with perfect carbonation and a great slightly sweet, bitter finish. Overall, this was way better than I had expected. The reviews that I had read did not prepare me for such an amazing beer. And the 11.6 ABV was nowhere to be found. Scary drinkable! Excellent interpretation of a coffee stout! Definitely one of the best I've had! Kudos Menno!

330ml bottle, 11.6% ABV. "Malt & Mocha", maybe? If so, a decidedly less interesting thematic name this time around.

This beer pours a solid black, with slight basal cola highlights, and two fingers of puffy, thinly foamy beige head, which leaves some random streaky lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of sharp earthy, vegetal coffee beans, dry chocolate, wet ash, bready, crackery malt, acerbic yeast, and leafy, straw-like hops. The taste is like cold, bitter cafe au lait - cooled coffee and sour milk - bready, crusty malt, a touch of caramel, medium cocoa flakes, semi-sweet yeasty, indistinct fruit, and earthy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is sporadically lively in a mildly unexpected sense, the body a decently hefty medium weight, and fairly smooth amongst the remains of the day-old coffee. It finishes strangely on the sweet side, the cuppa joe, malt, and fruit growing a collective sugary additive bar.

A decent coffee-forward big stout, the titular malt playing a secondary role for the most part, at least as far as appearances go. Once again, for this tweaked (heh) style, the exorbitant ABV is conspicuous in its absence, leaving the bitter beans and lactic edge to have their way within. Good, especially if you like, well, coffee.

My bottle says 11,6% ABV, not 9.50%.

appearance: Pitch black with bit of mocca colored foam if you give it very quick pour. Loses the head quickly, good lacing.

smell: Chocolate, coffee and some kind of sour fruity yeast.

taste: Quite a deep coffee and dark chocolate taste which mellow out slighly with some dark dry fruit sweetness. When the sweetness fades the bittering coffee and chocolate return and leaves it lingering on the palette. Surprisingly there's not much alcohol taste to it considering the high ABV.

mouthfeel: Quite mellow and creamy. Not much carbonation.

overall: Not their best. Lacks the depth some of their other beers have, but it's well balanced and still very enjoyable.
