Looks-wise this gives the overall impression of a malted milk ball; dark, thick, chocolatey brown with a big, sandy, beige head. The aroma is mostly a hickory-like smoke, molasses, Band-Aids, a drop of honey, and unfortunately little else. However, the flavor is nice, and has a fair amount of nuance, although it's too try and thin to really savor. Lots of chocolate, some whisky-like smoke, dates, walnuts, and oak – rich and savory. As for the chilli? It's there, but it's very, very subtle – at first you just get its flavor, which integraes well with the smoke, but over time it steadily builds to a satisfying heat that warms the whole mouth. Pretty good, but imbalanced and just a little uninteresting – there are similar and much better beers available from Mikkeller, Black Isle, and Rogue. (805 characters)

in my eyes these guys are becoming one of the kings, and frankly have been for some time, ahead of their time really, and i am only just discovering so many of their awesome beers now. just fantastic stuff here, smoked imperial porter with chili peppers. not sure how old this is, but the peppers must have faded off a bit, as they are there in faint flavor, accent notes, but no heat at all, and its all way back. crazy pour like a lot of their other stuff, with a super tall mocha head of large soda bubbles and a dense chocolate brown color to the beer itself. the nose shows a lot of smoke right up front, almost peaty for a moment, wet and musky, with their familiar high gravity yeast in there as well. the peppers are way back, like in a dark chocolate bar, and bring out nuance without being a chili beer as most americans think of them. the flavor is really balanced between the smoke and the fire, which is what this label means. the booze serves to cut the intensity, and unite the elements. the yeast is again the star of another de molen beer, this time drying it out with a day old bread crust complexion and impossibly high carbonation. one of the things i like about these guys is their use of subtle european hops usually seen in pilsener types in these huge imperial stouts and porters. it gives the beers a very unique hop character and feel, and its common in several of their beers. these guys are pioneers, and while this one isnt my favorite that they do, its certainly up to the very high standards they have established with their other stuff. (1,568 characters)

Maybe the one I got was bad, but it tasted like sour cigarette smoke. I like sour beers and I like smoked beers. The problem is this taste like it shouldn't be sour. (165 characters)

Black with low mocha head, Low to average lacing. The aroma is wood smoke, also meaty aroma, leather. I don’t feel chilli at all. The taste is also smokey, leather, soy sauce and sweet. Palate it thin, low carbonation. The beer is lighter than you could expect, due to sweet character very drinkable. Really nothing special. (326 characters)

Fresh bottle at Volo release day. Outstanding smoked. Aromas of rich smoked malt and wine. Very rich malt, chocolate, peat, whisky, really tasty, with chiles in the finish.Good amount of retained head. One of the best beers I have had in last few months. (254 characters)

Super foamy. Light tan head piled high that sticks around. Dark brown body.

Thinnish, acrid peat smoke on the nose.

Lightish, wood/peat smoke. Good if thin. Smoke is a bit too acrid.

Mouthfeel is kinda too carby.

Neat, but lots of smoke and not as much body. (262 characters)

330 mL bottle poured into a chalice. Bottled 6/25/2012.

Appearance - Wow, it's really overcarbonated. Can't fit this little bottle into a 500 mL glass. Overflow poured into a separate glass. Murky dark brown. Gigantic khaki head. Never goes away. Laces well and leaves a thick pillow.

Smell - Smoke and lots of chocolate. I dig the chocolate. The smoke is incorporated well, I thought it might be stronger. Slightly peaty and meaty aroma, too.

Taste - Much less smoke at the front. More caramel and chocolate. Not a really dark chocolate, sweeter and creamier. Smoke starts to build and finishes with a strong slightly briny flavor. Might be the remnants of peppers, which I don't get distinctively.

Mouthfeel - Way overcarbonated. Makes it feel light and detracts from the flavors.

Overall - After drinking a bit of this, I lost interest in it quickly. Not rich enough and the chocolate flavor dropped off. (912 characters)

11.2 oz. Dark brown pour, super big head, bottle overflowed upon opening. Disappated pretty quickly though. Just a bit annoying. Light cream colored head is left.

Aroma, Some woody beachwood smoke. Lighter toffee and malt. Some of the typical Belgian yeast I detect in their brews. Improves as it warms, smoke more prevelent and yeast less.

Taste, A lot of woody smoke again. Heavy toasted malt, peaty and leather. Earthy, toffee. Could maybe use a little more sweetness, say caramel and chocolate. Still pretty nice.

Body, the weakest part here. The carbonation is just too prickly. Lessens the body significantly. Drinks pretty easy though, abv is non-existent.

Honestly my expecations are never that high for De Molen, the half Belgian half other style brews they do are always just a bit of a miss for me. This one however, is a strong representation for the style. If they could just get that carbonation under control. (928 characters)

Poured from the bottle into my Dogfish Head snifter glass. Bottle dated August 18th 2011.

Appearance.. um ok.. let's call.. borderline ridiculousness. Ninety percent of my snifter is filled with foam that is going nowhere. It's like cellulose insulation in my glass. Seriously. I am looking at my bottle from which I poured. It's full of suds with half of it emptied. Body color is classic dark walnut brown to black. This is ridiculous looking, it gives me the impression it's infected. Finally settles down after a minute or so while I type this.

Nose is unique. Some rauch like classic smoke, beef jerky, but also some faint milk chocolate. Unfortunately, heavily phenolic, band aid smelling and too noticeable. Medicinal forward HEAVILY.

Palate starts off well, then finishes terribly. Hints off with classic smoke that descends into a mess. Afterfinish brings a giant novocaine blast. Seriously my tongue is numb as I am typing this, I feel the needle stuck in my gums. Mouthfeel is not too bad, slightly wet, but there's also noticeable heat here. When have I ever had a beer that NUMBED my sense? oh not until NOW! What joy is THAT?!?

Looking at the ingredients list, chilies? whiskey malts? umm where is this bouquet and flavor? This is a novocaine dentist office trip mess. I am craving a Schlenkerla now, this is not good and just makes me think what the heck where they thinking? Terrible, you've done better. I am scoring this overall REAL low, this is no fun at all and this is one of my favorite styles.. really dropped the ball here. Ok I admit using a snifter on this was a bit overkill, but the taste on this is a real disaster. (1,650 characters)

330ml bottle. ½ pint shaker glass. Enjoyed on jun´12. Pours dark amber in color, headed by dark beige, copious & rocky foam. Crown is lasting, creamy & flavorful. Shows aromas of roasted malts, burnt chocolate & peat smoked malts as well as roasted bacon & peppery hues. Subtle underlying floral notes. Sweet/sour flavor at first sip with intense burnt bread & smoky touch. Flavor seems to be smooth by roasted malts but spicy/smoky hues win the match. Suntuous bitter & kind oily palate. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Dry sour fruit/bitter finish. Odd beer! (565 characters)

A: A very dark hazy murky brown with a ungodly large light tan head.

S: Smoke and chili hit you like a punch in the face. slight whiskey character with tons of wood. leather and tobacco at the seams of this beer.

T: Fatty bacon and big wood characters jump out of this one. Hickory and peat. Smoke and whiskey. Caramel chocolate and bread. I tell you these flavors for me are coming in twos! a leather and tobacco with more smoke. a small hint of heat and chili spice. a slight bitter earthy finish.

M: Lighter than i would have expected. long lingering smoke.

O: wow. this is an interesting beer to say the least. good malt, great smoke, alot of earthy flavors. I couldn't drink alot of this but it is very enjoyable and would go so well with a nice robust steak or cigar. /88 (784 characters)

I had this on-tap at Max's. Served in a goblet.

Appearance: Pours an almost opaque mahogany color with a layer of fluffy off white head that fades to a ring around the glass.

Smell: Smokey with some malt sweetness. Reminds me a bit of a band aid because it is a bit medicinal.

Taste: Smoke and dark fruit, the medicinal note shows up here as well. The finish is quite bitter with no peppers to be found.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with tons of carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This beer is way too medicinal. I'm really not a fan and wouldn't have another. (563 characters)
