Mooi & Meedogenloos combines both Belgian-style quadruple and an imperial stout. Sweet and spicy like the first but roasted and full bodied like the second. Flavour indication: chocolate, plums, brown sugar.

Appearance: Very dark brown, with a nice 1/4" of tan head that sticks around. No light gets through except for through the stem.

Aroma: Dark fruit and twizzlers jump out at first, with a strong sweetness, and good alcohol presence. Further notes of brown sugar and raisins come through, with molasses undertones throughout.

Taste: Much lighter body than expected, but still nice. There is some bitterness, but not a ton. Licorice and molasses come through most, with a strong alcohol presence. The roasted and toasted notes linger, but the sweet fruit/licorice flavors fade relatively quickly.

Overall: A very good beer, with a well rounded flavor that sits and lets you sip for a while. I'd like to try a fresh one, but there are no dated bottles in my local shop.

Pours a dark brown with tan khaki head. It's quite aromatic, I get raisin and almonds to go along with kind of a port vinous nose. Maybe some anise as well. Really not lying when they say quad meets stouts - it's really got a chocolate, raisin, raisinetty character, although it doesn't have the sweetness of the raisinets. It's a more upscale dark chocolate version. The body is still lean and it has a nice prickly carb. There is some booze in there, but it isn't overwhelming. It maintains its drinkability in a way that more modern stouts certainly aren't. It's got old world execution. This is a very unique beer.

L- Very black, even held to a halogen lamp, pours with a 5mm mid-tan fine-bubble head. Forms lacing on the way down.
S- A deep roast facet here. I don't get more detail as my nose/palate was bludgeoned by my previous beer (a massive coffee porter) just earlier.
T- Deep roasted, deep coffee (makes me sneeze!), some slightly 'warmer' cocoa too alongside.
F- Pungent, a big flavoured beer. One for slow-sipping in winter. It has some sense of richness - it needs it vs that taste - but I'm glad it isn't over-rich never mind straying into sweetness.
O- I now wish I'd had this on a fresher palate as I can tell this is a refined and elegant beer (despite it's strength). And I sense there's detail within the overall that is eluding me. It is a highly impactful beer but it's done in such a polished/balanced way that I'd happily drink this again. - No single aspect over-dominates, that's what makes it stand out as something rather special.
330ml bottle BB: 05-08-2025 £4.55 Bought from TremblingMadness/York as part of a large pick-your own consignment to London.

ps. An added comment a/o 30/03/21. I am not going to change anything above^, neither text nor ratings. Just, this is another bottle I am enjoying today. Big coffee + cocoa upfront that settle right down on sip #2 or #3. A subtle brandy [?] note. Wow this is so polished, so deeply intensely balanced. Perfect for slow-sipping. Just right for bidding adieu to a lovely evening...

I think this was bottled 13 Feb 2012

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep black beer which is topped by a dense and rocky three finger cream colored head which fades slowly and leaves decent lacing
S: Smells of stewed fruits and toffee with a little spice.
T: Taste is stewed dark fruits, chocolate, roasted malts, toffee, more dark fruits and a hint of spice. The swallow brings more chocolate, toffee, roasted malts and dark fruits with a hint of dark toasted bread.
M: This beer is full in body with a slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Carbonation is effervescent but not prickly while the beer has a drying finish which is nice.
O: I'm pretty impressed by this beer. It has great flavors and some nice complexity. The flavors are also well integrated and plat well together which makes it an enjoyable drink. No strong hints of oxidation on this one either which is nice.

I have been cellaring that for a long time.
Dark brown color with practically no head.
Aroma with notes of prunes, molasses-toffee, mild coffee, chocolate and some nobel hops.
Flavor with notes of prunes, molasses, lots of chocolate and burnt coconut, licorice, vanilla, wood, cognac, candied banana and a bit of raspberries. Dry and bitter aftertaste. After all this years, its 78 IBUs mellowed out.
Bordering full sticky body with low carbonation. Alcohol of 10.2% is well disguised and complements flavor once it warms up.
After all this years it really went back to its Quad origins with its high IBU mellowing out and caramel sweetness and esters gaining strength. It did remind me of a Brazilian manjar desert, which is coconut pudding with lots of caramel and prunes. I guess the chocolate is the Imperial Stout tweak, and maybe the high IBU when young. This might be better younger given that.

Tap @ Small Bar, Bristol - Pours dark black with a thin tanned foamy head which quickly disappears. Medium carbonation. Nice lacing. Aroma - Dark chocolate, roasted coffee, fruit notes - raspberry. Taste - Sweet front , charcoal, dark chocolate, roasted coffee, licorice notes, light bitterness at the end. Surprised to see this listed as a Quad as it felt more like an RIS to me, a nice one to boot.

Bottled 2/13/2012.

This one pours a fairly dark brown, with a surprisingly active white head- it never truly dissipated while drinking this. There's a little bit of lacing.

This smells like molasses, brown sugar, sherry (oxidation), raisins, prunes, acidic coffee, and prunes. I get a little bit of cardboard on the nose.

I'm surprised- but this honestly tastes a lot like Dark Lord. There's a huge sugary dark fruit character, and it's quite sweet- and the sweetness really does remind of that mythical evil being. There's some dark brown sugar, a bit of chocolate, and fruity acidic coffee. It's definitely oxidized at 5 years old, but I don't get any actual cardboard in the taste, just sweet sherry. I can tell this may start falling off quite soon, though.

This is medium bodied, a little bit syrupy, with a lower but still active level of carbonation.

This is a very interesting beer. I'm curious as to what it was like fresh, but it's still quite nice 5 years out.
