Birthday gift from volcanicbeat. Bottled June 24, 2010.

A - As far as I can tell the pour is black with some moderate carbonation coming up. A gentle pour created a fairly thick, 3 finger beige head with only about half the bottle getting in before I stopped. Good rings of lace and a finger of retention with an ice cream scoop hill in the middle.

S - Dark fruit, raisins, some nice spirit notes, brown sugar and nuts. A nice aroma.

T - Nutty again with dark fruit, a bit of raisin again, sugar. Licorice and chocolate seem to come through too. Pretty complex and pretty sweet too.

M - Good carbonation, full body and a sweet, dry finish.

O/D - A fairly pleasant BSDA. A touch sweet but otherwise nice and complex while bringing some new and different flavours to the table while hiding the big ABV pretty well. A good one from De Molen. (844 characters)

Thanks to Jeffo for this one. Served in a FoBAB mini-pint glass. Bottled June 21st, 2010.

A - Two main things leap out at me here. One - this is over-primed and the resulting amount of tan foam is enormous. Two, this isn't an RIS. Ridiculous head retention that eventually settles to a thick cap, but leaves minimal lace behind. Body is extremely dark brown-red with some transparency when held to the light. Looks more like a quad or BSDA of some sort.

S - Taste is again heavy on quad flavors - raisins, dates, other dark fruits, light milk chocolate notes, a bit of rum-cake, and a faint hint of buttery diacetyl as well. Also a hint of alcohol, but nothing excessive. Strikes me more as a hybrid of various English and Belgian styles.

T - Again, it's extremely fruity, with toffee, treacle, cherries, brown and caramelized sugars, and a bit of nuttiness as well. There's a bit of the sharp alcohol bite that I get out of many scotch ales and quads. Finish is a bit harsh, with alcohol and mild astringency present.

M - It's a bit over-carbonated, which detracts from an otherwise creamy medium body. Dry finish, with some obvious alcohol warmth. Letting it sit for a while helps quite a bit.

D - Not sure what to make of this beer - you could have told me it was a quad, English strong ale, Belgian strong dark ale, English barleywine, scotch ale, or winter warmer and I probably would believe you. It's surprisingly easy to drink considering the ABV and the mild over-carbonation. I'd certainly give it another shot, but I wouldn't actively seek this one out. (1,569 characters)

Very dark in brown, the ale could be easily mistaken as a porter. Except with the eruptive carbonation, nearly rocky tan head, and lacing decoration that covers nearly half the surface area of the glass, the beer is deceptively dark.

But that darkness doesn't translate to any roast character. Instead the aromas of heavy toast, kona coffees, walnut, and chocolate provide a foundation from which the estery twang of berries, cherries, vinous grapes, and apples spring from. An envelope of starch aromas seem both of fresh bread and spaghetti. Fresh cracked peppercorn and oak-like char gives a peppery note to decorate the fruit and malt components.

Flavors follow suit, with the sweeter tone of grapes, powdered sugar, a dash of brown sugar, slightly scorched toffee, toast char, chocolate, cherries, figs, dates, plumbs, and peppercorn all providing the balance of fruit and spice- giving the beer all the complexity and balance it needs. But it doesn't stop there. It continues to build the rich underpinnings of starchy malts with rich bread taste, Dopplebock-like melanoidin savoriness, meaty and light smoky taste to accompany vanilla and heavy cream. The beer goes a lot of directions at once.

Certainly full bodied despite its ample carbonation, the malt richness is heavy, semi-thick, and fully textured. Creamy from the onset, the marshmallowy texture extends well past mid palate and rests in expansive fashion on the tongue and envelops the mouth completely before the semi-malty, vinous tart, and slight warmth of carbonation signals the indefinite finish.

Very rich in malt character but not overly sweet, this is an interesting rendition of the Belgian strong dark ales that gets away from the supple and arid versions- this guy begs for a pairing of cobbler or bread pudding. (1,797 characters)

Bottle date: 13/02/2012

Appearance: Very dark brown, with a nice 1/4" of tan head that sticks around. No light gets through except for through the stem.

Aroma: Dark fruit and twizzlers jump out at first, with a strong sweetness, and good alcohol presence. Further notes of brown sugar and raisins come through, with molasses undertones throughout.

Taste: Much lighter body than expected, but still nice. There is some bitterness, but not a ton. Licorice and molasses come through most, with a strong alcohol presence. The roasted and toasted notes linger, but the sweet fruit/licorice flavors fade relatively quickly.

Overall: A very good beer, with a well rounded flavor that sits and lets you sip for a while. I'd like to try a fresh one, but there are no dated bottles in my local shop. (793 characters)

Appearance : dark red brown color with tan foamy head.
Smell : roasted malt, caramel, chocolate aromas.
Tasted & mouthfeel : dark dried fruit with roasted, wood and spicy notes. Dry alcoholic finish.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours opaque black with a twon finger tan head with good retention and pillowy lacing. Aroma of molasses, dark toasted malt and more molasses. Flavor is sweet dark dried fruit, mainly dates and raisins, marizpan, slightly nutty and toasty. Sweet dark fruit finish with hints of chocolate, dark malt and tannins. Medium bodied with pleasant peppery carbonation. A quite nice Belgian dark, a bit on the sweet side, but rich dark flavors that support the sweetness. Warming, but the ABV is well covered. The most molasses I've ever encountered in an ale aroma. Molasses is not a major element of the flavor, however. The pour lead me to think I was pouring a dark stout and the flavor somewhat surprised me. Even translated, but name doesn’t give anything away. I enjoyed this, but its sweetness makes it kind of a dessert sipper. Nice for a cool, dark evening. (897 characters)

Bottle at Bar Volo(bottled May 26, 2011). Substantive bitterness, very coffee like bitterness. The aroma is very roast. Black bodied. Lacey. A long bitter finish.Average mouthfeel, and a small amount of chocolate malt. More of an imperial stout. Decent drinkability, although something I may not reach for again. A bomber is a lot for three people.Slightly drying aftertaste. (375 characters)

Drank from my Duvel Tulip

A - Pours a quad like appearance with a huge beige head that reduces to a film very slowly.

S - Aromas of small coffee and roasted malt.

T - Plenty of coffee present up front tha gives way to a very smooth caramel flavour. Some nice dark fruits in the flavour and finishes in quite a spicey way.

M - Slightly over carbonated and fullish body.

O - A very drinkable RIS (398 characters)

A: A dark reddish brown pour with a big fluffy tan head. Fades slowly, very slowly. Leaves a foam island behind as well as decent trails of lacing as it fades.

S: Strong fruity figs and raisins up front. Loads of sweet caramel. A hint of cocoa? Mostly the strong and sweet fruitiness.

T: As in the nose, a strong fig and raisin presence up front. Caramel throughout. Chocolate kicks in the middle, a little stronger than in the nose but still subtle. Fades with a lingering earthy bitterness.

M: Medium-heavy body. Carbonation is spot on.

O: Interesting BSDA. It's fairly simple and very fruit-heavy. Surprising bitterness on the back end too. Solid beer, nothing too amazing however. (713 characters)

Really dark brown with just a bit of short-living off-white froth.
Smell of dark fruit jam, mostly raisin, date and some cherry, molasses, sweet dark malts, a bit of chocolate, a bit of alcohol, faint walnut.
Sweet dark fruit up front, bathed in molasses and caramel. Lots of raisin, fig, slightly sour cherries. A bit of citrus peel. Malts are toasty, bringing some chocolate, faint nut and dark bread crust. Nice and spicy, licorice, faint anise, teaming up with the warm alcohol in the finish and hinting strongly at Port wine. Light roast here too.
Medium body, almost flat, sticky. Aftertaste is still sweet, lingering molasses and some raisin, plus toasted dark bread.
A bit sweet, but a nice take on a quad. Really tasty, just a bit complex. (748 characters)

330ml bottle. "Beautiful & Ruthless", eh? There must be more to that...

This beer pours a clear, very dark ruby hue, with three fingers of foamy, puffy beige head, which leaves some nice hanging swaths of sudsy webbed lace around the glass as it evenly abates.

It smells of lightly toasted, kind of grainy malt, some musty ashy notes, middling earthy black fruit, a bit of dry nutty coffee, and soft leafy, weedy hops. The taste is much fruitier, and fuller than I was initially led to expect - caramel malt, enveloped in rounded dark, slightly sour drupe flesh, some further Fig Newtons essence, a twinge of green Belgian yeastiness, biscuity dark chocolate, oily roasted nuts, and mild earthy, still a wee bit ashy hops. The big ABV does a stellar job of staying on the down low.

The carbonation is a tad sprightly, but generally even and structurally sound, the body a sturdy medium-heavy weight, and pretty well smooth, with just a subtle metallic burp from the booze barbarian at the gate. It finishes on the sweet side, the fruity malt flexing it muscles still, but hardly overdoing it with the latent floral, sassy hops having a thing or two to say in the matter.

Well, a decent stroke at one of my favourite styles, and with a north of 10%, integrated ABV to boot, quite drinkable. Now I can see my lost in translation error at the outset - this is, more or less, one of the Bold and the Beautiful, Dutch version. (1,425 characters)

Pours a very dark brown; just a glimmer of colour through an otherwise black body. Head is beige and quite foamy. Soft and sinky on the top, sparse bubbles around the side. Thick, and retaining beautifully. If lace were a touch stickier it would be perfect.

Smells quite roasty. Lots of slightly sour espresso notes, with a generous dash of soy sauce giving a slight salty edge. Mild spice to it with licorice and some chocolate sweetness hanging at the back. Decent, but I'd like it to head either in the more roasty or the sweeter direction; the saltiness ultimately wins out.

Taste is quite a decent duck indeed. Roasty from the get-go, with spicy roasted malt giving licorice, espresso coffee and slight charcoal flavour. Mellows to a quite sweet mid-palate with caramel and a touch of raisin, then spice immediately takes over for the finish, with a dollop of alcohol heat, some darker notes of cocoa and coffee, and a slight floral hint at the end giving a very pleasant, clean finish to a potent palate.

Good body, bit rough around the edges though where the alcomohol hits.

Drinkable? Yeah, as a sipper. That clean finish is a winner, and there's not too much going on to put you off throughout the palate. (1,218 characters)

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains Belgian yeast, chocolate, brown sugar, roasted malts, licorice and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with strong flavors of chocolate, brown sugar, licorice, raisins and caramel. Then some breadiness comes in from the Belgian yeast and a hearty roasted malt character. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a decent balance. The after-taste is sweet.

M: Smooth and viscous, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty and complex, goes down ok, not too filling, strong kick, good representation of style, it’s a solid beer but there are others in the style that I would pick first. (842 characters)

Poured from a 33cL bottle into a brandy snifter. Bottled 13 February 2012.

A: MASSIVE, oversized head. Even a moderate pour nets 4+ fingers of head and threatens to overflow the glass. Impressive retention, but not a good start. Heavy lacing.

S: Vague fruits. Porterish dark, chocolate, nutty malts.

T: Excellent! Rich, complex, and rewarding. Very sweet, with a sticky-fruity side and a chocolate, malty character. Raisins, dates, plums, and other dark, sugary fruits swim around, with a touch of Belgian yeast, a hint of roast, and some definite chocolate (especially on the aftertaste).

M: From all that head, I expected a bit more carbonation. As it stands, it's thick, smooth, and a tad oppressive.

O: A good beer, but underwhelming. Would look elsewhere for my BSDA, but did not tarnish my opinion of De Molen. (821 characters)

A- Plain Jane 12oz poured into a tulip with a deep ruby-brown body and an insane cap. Foamy, frothy pillow about four fingers high with great retention; opposite of what I usually get out of this brewery. Lacing is ample, large twisted webs.

S- Dates, figs, raisins, grapes and heavily caramelized sugars fill the entire room it seems as soon as I pour this one. Beyond the big fruits are notes of rum, toast, Belgian yeast spice and musty oxidation.

T- As in the aroma, the dark fruits are very strong easily taking center stage in this flavor profile. Huge dark wine grapes, raisins, figs, dates and rum-molasses-caramel dark sugars. Malty backdrop is grainy, toasty, caramelized and ever so slightly roasted. Some yeast spice and a hint of smoke/char. Vinous.

MF- Probably the most surprising part of the beer is just how foamy this is. Super highly carbonated but inside an acceptable range by a hair. Creamy and puffy and the lightest warmth.

I always like trying De Molen brews; there is just a certain level of intrigue. Dark fruits really attribute to most of what is going on taking away from the complexity of the malts. Really heavy grape tone but very well hidden ABV and still solid to be honest. (1,317 characters)

.33cl bottled acquired at De Molen in Bodegraven and served into Antwerp Beer Passion Weekend 20cl stemware. 10.2% ABV confirmed.

A: Pours a four finger head of tan colour, fair cream and thickness, and amazing retention - especially for this high an ABV. The head's showing no signs of going down after four minutes. Colour is a dark brown with visible yeast particles.

Sm: Yeast, cream, caramel, and coffee. A mild strength aroma.

T: Cream opens to a caramelized malt foundation on top of which are notes of caramel, cream, coffee, and roasted barley. Alcohol is quite apparent, unfortunately. Complex but a bit imbalanced. Well built for the style.

Mf: Coarse - a bit overly so, and dry - but not enough. Doesn't quite suit the flavours like it should.

Dr: Hides its ABV alright. Very drinkable and of high quality. Fairly priced at the brewery. I'd have it again.

11.2oz bottle.

Pours very dark mahogany brown with a huge fluffy beige head that sticks around for ages and leaves tons of sticky lacing.

Aroma is very sweet with lots of candi sugar, chocolate and overripe dark fruits - sugar-coated raisins. Some oak and vanilla mixed in.

The taste has an initial kick that I wasn't expecting and is tough to place. Definitely some booze, chocolate and dark fruit. There is also a hint of tartness or something, can't pin it down. Boozy sweet finish.

Mouthfeel is highly carbonated, maybe too much for me, which lends to a lighter feel than I was expecting.

This is an interesting beer with a taste that had a lot going on. Sweet and boozy with some dark fruit and other things thrown in. Tasty though I couldn't drink more than one. (773 characters)

Pitch, inky black with a creamy, dark tan head. Good head retention and great lacing.

Spicy alcohol, bitter roast and a deep herbal bitterness are the most present items in the aroma. There is some bitter chocolate as well. Good.

Dry, bitter, a little hoppy. Some chocolate. There are a few harsh phenolics in the background. The flavour is actually quite straight forward and okay but a little more sweetness would help this along.

Medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Quite thin.

For me the flavours here are okay but the lack of body and residual malt doesn't help this beer. (590 characters)

When selecting it off the shelf, I thought it was another of their Imeprial Stouts, given the abv, ibu content, etc. But, as soon as I poured and tasted it, realized it was no Impy Stout.

Pours a dark brown/red with a nice head.
Notes of toffee with hints of herbal hops and ripe fruits. Honestly was pretty one dimensional but nice tasting with great balance and the abv was well hidden. (389 characters)

A good looking beer, but holy hell...the head was about 7 fingers! Dirty glass? No. Used another. Same. Whew, that's foam! And looks like chocolate milk.

Dark pour. The aroma is coffee and dark chocolate. A bit of berry and dark toast.

Coffee lingers in the flavor, but fades. The yeast and bread come out a bit, too, but not much. Cranberry and some berry come and go across the palate. A hint of nuttiness. Toffee.
Not quite as sweet or candy-like that many dark Belgians (beers) have, which makes it more drinkable.

Solid beer. Price is touch steep. (558 characters)

A-- Poured a dark brown color and settled black with some tints of red on the sides. Slow pour got a massive, almost 4 finger brown sugar colored head. Did take its time to recede though. Very clean, left no lacing at all. Good head retention but think this might be a bit over carbonated.

S-- There is Alcohol in this?? Really?? 10.2%? Does not smell like it. Candied sugar, plumbs, and a lot of malt and roasted malts. Near burnt coffee like malts.

T-- Oddly enough big and thick but carbonated. Bittering hops do kick in in taste but this is on the thick side but with more carbonation. A lot of burnt coffee and stewed plumbs/ dark fruits.

M-- Sweet in the mouth. Almost want to say poached pear or plumb. A little thick and syrupy but workable. Bitter coffee finish with some dark fruits. Booze does become more noticeable in the mouth. More it warms up the more aniseed it becomes.

D-- Can be harsh and unfinished at times and at other times brilliant. Needs to be cellared for a bit. Can taste the serious potential this beer has. Worth finding and putting in the cellar for a year or so to let is smooth and round out. Very Belgian in style but done well. (1,219 characters)

A: The beer pours a hazed dark brown color that foamed up a little as the bottle was opened.

S: Smells of oak and vanilla initially. There's a lot of roasted malt and a bit of toasted bread. A bit of cherry and nut shell aroma to go with some chocolate, coffee, and a light booziness.

T: There is quite a bit of booze which gives the beer an almost tart flavor. Lots of roast and oak with some light toast notes. Cocoa powder and nuts with hints of licorice and molasses.

M: Medium bodied with somewhat high carbonation for an imperial stout.

O: I just don't "get it" with these De Molen beers. This was mediocre. (644 characters)

A - Pours dark brown in color, white head, thin collar, spotty lace.

S - Chocolate, malts, yeast, toffee, light roast. The sweetness isn't overpowering and works well with the roast & yeast notes. The booze is there, but doesn't impair the nuances.

T - Chocolate, booze, toasted malts, yeast, carmel. A little less sweet then the nose with a touch hotter booze note. More dark chocolate bitterness then the sweeter chocolate I picked out on the nose. Finish is toasted malts & caramel sweetness.

M - Medium body, good carbonation, creamy finish.

O - A nice Belgian Strong that has some good complexity and well-hidden alcohol notes. I like the bitter & sweet notes and it really works well together. Decent. (773 characters)

330ml with a bottled-on date of 2/13/2012.

A - Soft pour into a tulip results in a glass full of beige foam - head seems to be all or nothing with these guys. It eventually settles to about a finger on top of what looks to be black beer, but a hold-up to the light reveals a very dark red beer and plenty of carbonation bubbles. Good lace splotches left behind.

S - Cigarbox-roast-fruitcake, raisin, brown sugar, chocolatey caramel sweetness, some oxidation. Definitely De Molen.

T - Big dark fruit here with lots of raisin and red grape, big sweetness with lots of brown sugar, chocolate, and kind of an odd smokiness. Bitter coffee-ish finish.

M - Definitely too much carbonation. Spiky foaminess detracts. A bit of an alcohol bite but not too bad for the ABV. Just an odd mix of sweetness, bitterness, roast, foam. 330ml...should certainly be shared. Maybe three ways.

O - Smell-to-taste transference has never been De Molen's strong suit, this one smells promising enough but feels like a bit of mess when it comes to the taste. The uber-foam doesn't help things. (1,072 characters)
