Poured in several stages due to the unexpected amount of carbonated head this Russian Imperial STout generates in a chalice glass. To me this seems very unusual to the style.

Appearance is very dark as expected, however, it comes with a tall tan head the size and integrity that one would expect from a Belgian strong ale for example.

Nose is full of soft coffee notes with a slightly over weight quantity of dark fruits.

In the mouth and across the tongue it is very strong up front with a delicate balance of espresso and bitter hops. The usual taste expectations of the Russian Stouts style are there, however, the bitterness definitely differentiates this from its peers.

This brings us to mouthfeel and I'm once again taken back to the question of carbonation. In the mouth there is a degree of weight and intensity, however this is beset on both sides by an intense carbonation that strongly effects the overall weight of the beer.

The carbonation issue is really just a thing of personal taste but it needs to be put out there, but, overall; this is a fantastic beer. Perhaps not as good as Rasputin, but thats a different beast altogether.

A: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a dark brown color and a cloudy consistency. There was a huge, tan-colored, foamy, long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: A nice aroma of dark fruits, malt, and bit of yeast. Typical Belgian Strong Dark Ale.

T: Tasted of some malt, dark fruits (plums, raisins), some yeast, and a hint of chocolate in the finish. Not a hint of alcohol in it. A very straightforward, likeable flavor.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a crisp, dry finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is a solidly made, easy to like, drinkable beer.

Pours a somewhar murky russett brown with an almost perfect light beige one finger clingy head atop leaving a full broken ring of lace as it settles oh so slowly.Fruit with a hint of sherry vinegar in the nose wich Iam not sure is a good thing but works here, wow it's fruity.Fruity and cakey on the palate with some cake notes, the finsih has some yeasty spice notes. The alcohol is kept in control pretty good and the palate is a fruit attack.I liked it and would buy again.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this 33cl bottle. Bottled 6-24-10.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is very heavy on the caramel malt and roasted malt, along with some dark fruit mixed in. The beer has no hops in the aroma and smells very sweet.

The flavor is heavy on the dark fruit, toffee, brown sugar, chocolate, molasses, roasted malt and some nuttyness. The alcohol is very well hidden for a beer that is more than 10 percent in alcohol. A very complex, very malty stout. Very drinkable considering the ABV.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice Belgian-inspired Stout from De Molen.

Brewed 25 march 2011, bottled 5 may 2011, in a 33 cl bottle.
81.7 EBU.

Dark brown colour, light brown head. This beer is very lively from the bottle. It tries to escape from it, has a huge head, so it's not easy to get the stuff in the glass.
Once you do, it's got nice aroma and flavour: dark roasted malts, nutts, coffee, some chocolate. Dark fruits like raisins, figs. Some fresh berry in the smell too.
Full flavoured bittersweetness all over.

Similar to Hel & Verdoemenis, from the same brewery, in all aspects of the beer.
''Beauty and Mercyless'' spells ''Hell and Damnation''.
I knew it.

First had: on tap at Capone's, Norristown, PA

I too am calling b.s. on the Russian imp. stout label on this one. It's a Belgian dark ale; there was nothing stout-like about this beer at all.

Poured a very hazy dark brown color with a small white cap of head. Aroma almost of a Scotch ale, boozy, sweet, malty, and woody. Tasted of alcohol-soaked oak, Belgian yeast, toasty malts, toffee, with lesser notes of vanilla, cocoa and bitter hops. Pretty nice, robust, with a medium body. Moderately drinkable, not something I'd have during a casual session, but it'd probably go good with a nice cigar.

Birthday gift from volcanicbeat. Bottled June 24, 2010.

A - As far as I can tell the pour is black with some moderate carbonation coming up. A gentle pour created a fairly thick, 3 finger beige head with only about half the bottle getting in before I stopped. Good rings of lace and a finger of retention with an ice cream scoop hill in the middle.

S - Dark fruit, raisins, some nice spirit notes, brown sugar and nuts. A nice aroma.

T - Nutty again with dark fruit, a bit of raisin again, sugar. Licorice and chocolate seem to come through too. Pretty complex and pretty sweet too.

M - Good carbonation, full body and a sweet, dry finish.

O/D - A fairly pleasant BSDA. A touch sweet but otherwise nice and complex while bringing some new and different flavours to the table while hiding the big ABV pretty well. A good one from De Molen.

Thanks to Jeffo for this one. Served in a FoBAB mini-pint glass. Bottled June 21st, 2010.

A - Two main things leap out at me here. One - this is over-primed and the resulting amount of tan foam is enormous. Two, this isn't an RIS. Ridiculous head retention that eventually settles to a thick cap, but leaves minimal lace behind. Body is extremely dark brown-red with some transparency when held to the light. Looks more like a quad or BSDA of some sort.

S - Taste is again heavy on quad flavors - raisins, dates, other dark fruits, light milk chocolate notes, a bit of rum-cake, and a faint hint of buttery diacetyl as well. Also a hint of alcohol, but nothing excessive. Strikes me more as a hybrid of various English and Belgian styles.

T - Again, it's extremely fruity, with toffee, treacle, cherries, brown and caramelized sugars, and a bit of nuttiness as well. There's a bit of the sharp alcohol bite that I get out of many scotch ales and quads. Finish is a bit harsh, with alcohol and mild astringency present.

M - It's a bit over-carbonated, which detracts from an otherwise creamy medium body. Dry finish, with some obvious alcohol warmth. Letting it sit for a while helps quite a bit.

D - Not sure what to make of this beer - you could have told me it was a quad, English strong ale, Belgian strong dark ale, English barleywine, scotch ale, or winter warmer and I probably would believe you. It's surprisingly easy to drink considering the ABV and the mild over-carbonation. I'd certainly give it another shot, but I wouldn't actively seek this one out.
