Dark brown but not tar or black. Completely flat.

Aroma of char and vanilla. Noticeably boozy. Chocolate powder.

Tastes like Lawrenceberg, maple syrup, liquid brown sugar, vanilla extract blended with maple syrup an sugar, and bourbon blended chocolate stout which has been diluted through boiling after being mixed 2:1 with sugar.

Mouthfeel: Sweet. Sickly sweet. It’s a good thing this bottle is so small. There is a redeeming touch of twang at the end but for the most part this is a flat, sugary, syrupy mess. It is like drinking warm syrup.

Drinkability: Nil. This beer has been in a refrigerator for two years. Perhaps that did something to it??? This is not a very enjoyable beer. BBA freaks would love it but it’s not my cup of tea. Too thick and sweet. It may have been better younger when it would have been balanced with a greater hop presence or later when its tar like state would be more respectable. Some carbonation would help. It has none.

Big thanks to Will for splitting this bottle, along with a few other De Molen goodies. The Wild Turkey barrel variant of Hel & Verdoemenis shows pretty much the same color as the last two variants that were enjoyed before it (shocking, right?); black in the center and dark brown around the edges. This one show a bit more carbonation liveliness with an actual head that forms momentarily before fading to a lighter colored collar.

Robust and powerful aroma; I'm starting to learn that most of the Hel & Verdoemenis series of beers are quite strong and potent, even when you already consider that they're all 10%+ ABV Russian imperial stouts. Dark, bitter chocolate, moderate amounts of oak, smooth, warming bourbon, and some back o' the nostrils, ashy roast and char. Definitely a nose-hair burner, but the booze is integrated much better in this particular variant, methinks.

The first sip is shockingly just a little sweeter than the last two H&V beers, and it's certainly a welcomed change. Again, the beer is full of plentiful dark chocolate, roasty malt, and lighter amounts of coffee, but there's a swimming undercurrent of sweet creaminess that really tames the background of dry oak and warming bourbon. This subtle, yet powerful sweetness is exactly what I feel was lacking in the first two variants we sampled - I'm glad it finally showed up.

That's not to say that this brew isn't boozy, though - it's 11% ABV, and it demands sippage and respect just as well as any other 11% ABV stout, but the touch of sweet, underlying cream provides the balance that really does wonders for the drinkability. As with the others, the mouth feel would benefit from a bit more thickness to match the robustness of the aromas and flavors, but this variant contains a little more carbonation, which definitely helps some, too.

I thought this would be my least favorite of the three Hel & Verdoemenis variants we tried that night, mainly because I'm not a huge fan of Wild Turkey (and it had the lowest online ratings of the three). But low and behold, it was actually my favorite of them all, and by quite a large margin. The key is the mild sweetness, helping to blunt the heavy booze and roast.

A: Pours, dark, black, with no head and few bubbles ringing around my glass.

S: Really nice aroma: huge bourbon, vanilla and molasses. Following this, nutty dark chocolate, rum raisin, and roast espresso giving a bite to some slightly boozy elements in the end.

T: Dark chocolate up front, espresso bitterness and whiskey, biting alcohol blending with spicy malts and wood on the breath, sweeter vanilla caramel lingering in the finish.

M: Smooth, as you come to expect from this series, but on the thin side, not really coating the palate with these great flavors as much as I would like. Definitely a sipper.

O: Really great H&V treatment overall. The nose, with those great bourbon notes, knocks it out of the park, but the flavor can't quite meet the initial expectations of the smell.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is heavy on the roasted malt and chocolate, with an overwhelming amount of bourbon mixed in. I also get quite a bit of oak mixed in on the aroma.

The flavor is also great. I get a lot chocolate and roasted malt, as well as all of the notes you expect from a bourbon-barrel aged beer: wood, vanilla, maple and whiskey. There is also a little bit of coffee, although it is faint and overpowered by the other flavors. The alcohol is quite noticeable.

Medium carbonation and thick, chewy mouthfeel.

Glad I got to try this one, as it didn't disappoint.

330 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled 2/7/2013.

Appearance - Black with a hint of transparency. Small off-white head. Medium collar.

Smell - Lots of intense roasted malt. Slightly fruity. Some whiskey, but not all that intense.

Taste - More whiskey in the flavor. A little nutty. Not much barrel character, just some bourbon liquor. Finishes with a lingering oak flavor.

Mouthfeel - Overcarbonated, but not too badly. Boozy. Medium heavy.

Overall - My palate is shot at this point, but it's still really tasty.

Massive thanks goes out to beeruser for sharing this one with funkydelic and I at an impromptu tasting! First batch (96 bottles)! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller sampler wine glass. Poured a massively dark brownwith a minimal light tan head. There was no lacing evident throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark chocolate, wood, and dark fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, wood, and subtle sweet alcohol. It had a medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was just an excellent brew. The aroma on this one was excellent. So much so, it actually took me awhile to take my first sip as I kept going back to smell it over and over. Once it did hit my palate I knew I was in the presence of a great beer. The flavor was very complex and smooth. All aspects of this one just seemed to work in unison to make the others stand out. Really a great beer that I was very happy to have the opportunity to try!

Jeffo and I had an IP trade over in Belgium. He hands me this block of beers that have been wrapped in cardboard and tape. He says "Stick this [stuff] in your luggage and you're good to go". I get home to find that, among other sick bottles, he's included a bottle of this treasure. I'm pretty sure my wife gets sick of me yelling in happiness when I open boxes/packages like this one.

A - Near black pour into a La Chouffe (Magic Chouffe) tulip. All 18cl of it...haha. Good head, thin lacing. Lacing returns with every swirl, then goes back down to thin layer.

S - Chocolate, vanilla, bourbon. Nice aroma going on here. I get a good amount of the fudge and bourbon mix. It seems to take on the barrel well without overpowering the nose.

T - Starts mild as what I'd call a typical stout, then quickly makes a smooth transition to vanilla and light bourbon. Bourbon is smooth and pleasant. Bourbon flavor gives a noticeable amount of wood in the back part of each taste...best stated as a light charred oak. This mixes with coffee at the end of the flavor. Coffee remains for entire last 1/2 of the flavor, with mild vanilla lingering. When flavor sits on the tongue between sips, coffee dominates. Bourbon "sting" is a little bit evident, esters clear the nose but don't dominate or burn the tongue. Slight chocolate/fudge at the end, but only noticeable after a few sips. Really not as much fudge as the nose would indicate. 13%? Wow, I literally just noticed this (I wrote that down while tasting). Really not evident at all. Much less evident than, for example, in a bottle of BCBS. I would've guessed around 9% based on style and barrel aging.

M - Medium, smooth and works well with the beer. Quite enjoyable and appropriate. Carbonation remains throughout the entire serving.

O - Very good beer. I didn't quite get the upfront fudge that the aroma lead me to anticipate, but the bourbon was right on target. I sipped it slowly since I only had one (18cl bottles are BS, btw), but I would've returned for multiple servings at a bar or if I could have bought a case.

Pours a rather sludgy dark brown, not quite black but very viscous. Pretty much no carbonation.

Quite a bit of boozy bourbon deliciousness on the nose. Pretty hot, roasty, bit of molasses and dark chocolate. A surprising amount of booze appears as it warms. The barrel could be integrated a lot better here.

The palate is better than the nose, but it's still pretty damn hot. There are some nice flavors here, licorice and roasted malt, old leather, oak, brash bourbon. Plenty of sharp booze, too. The body is full, carbonation is low. The finish lingers with a lot of tannin and booze.

It's a nice sipper, but it's pretty unrefined stuff, slightly harsh. Still worth a try.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a thin dark tan head that quickly died down, leaving a bit of lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of bourbon from the barrel aging are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has lots of flavors of bourbon along with associated notes of vanilla and hints of chocolate from the underlying malts.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation with lots of warming from the bourbon.
O: This beer is nice if you like bourbon but the barrel aging really masks the flavors of the underlying beer. It tastes rather strong, but most of the alcohol that is noticeable comes from the bourbon.

Drank from my 1950's St Sixtus chalice

A - Pours the classic dark ebony colour with minimal head.

S - Aromas of vanilla, wood, oak and molasses.

TO - Up front some vanilla followed by some coffee and massive boozy bourbon flavours. The finish is very boozy and sticky sweet.

M - Medium to full with low carbonation. A bit thin.

O - The Europeans tend to struggle with this type of beer. It is not balanced at all and lack complexity. When measured with some US counterparts it leaves much to be desired.

Picked these up at de Molen beer shop as soon as I found out they had it.

Opens with a big hiss. Hopefull as some the bigger de Molen Stouts tend to be flat.

Pours pitch black. Almost no head or carbonation visible.

Lots of barrel on the nose upfront. The Hel en Verdoemenis I also recognise. Dark Choclate, Coffee, bitterness and some alcohol.

Sweetness, vanilla but also bitter chocolate and coffee upfront in the flavors. A roasty kind of coffee taste lingers afterwards. The nose promised some alcohol but the mouth doesn't come through on that one and that's a good thing.

A light body, smooth and yes there is some carbonation. Not as boozy as the original Hel en Verdoemenis. I'm very much convinced that this one will get better with age. The flavors might just have to blend a little more.

I'm glad I got my hands on a bunch of these. Won't open one for a while as I feel that this needs to age but once it's done... I think this could be one of the best barrel aged RIS I have tried. Will (re)review this again... and again.

I can't thank Erik enough for this amazing beer! poured into a snifter. Appearance is black and pours with a tiny head that quickly disappears looks to be medium thickness.

Smell is straight bourbon followed by unsweetened dark chocolate followed by some barrel, smells exciting. its almost like taking the cap off of wild turkey and smelling that. awesome

Taste follows the nose, bourbon first with dark chocolate, vanilla followed by some wood. I get some brown sugar in there followed by a nice alcohol burn. excellent, I need more of this stuff

Mouthfeel is pretty light compared to other big stouts, very little carbonation, alcohol is warming but nice.

I was very impressed overall by this beer. age would serve this beer well. pretty awesome beer in my opinion

Picked this bottle up from overseas. Served alongside the regular version and the Misto (courtesy of Eric). Served in a FFF-Intelligentsia snifter.

Pours a near-black color with a very thin mocha head that dissipates pretty quickly and leaves just a few bubbles behind. The nose has a ton of bourbon, though it's pretty smooth. Roast and chocolate in the background along with some mild vanilla and booze. The flavor is dominated by the bourbon, though no complaints here as it is quite nice. Oak and vanilla plus some chocolate. Body is a bit boozy and not quite as smooth or creamy as the Misto version. Really nice, still. Great beer; this was a really fun comparison set.

Ap: Low/medium dark tan head, good retention, thick black

T: Rich and full, roast, molasses, vanilla, strong whiskey, light smoke/char, dried dark fruit, strong chocolate, hop bitterness and unsweetened baking chocolate at end, raisin, brown sugar, toffee. A very full stout with good vanilla, roast, whiskey and char balance.

M: Smooth, alcohol warmth, low carbonation, full body, light alcohol bitterness, viscous

O: Very aggressive and very good, strong alcohol, very full and rich, amazing

The pour comes out inactive carbonation wise which seems to be a trend with these De Molen beers. I give it a jostle to try and conjur out some head but not happenning. The color is a half shade lighter than used motor oil and a maple syrup brown coats the glass after a swirl. All in all, nothing overly great about the appearance.

Then magic happens.

The scent is vanilla bean, molasses, toffee, bourbon and dark roast coffee. Fantastic. Not quite 4.5 but better than 4.0.

The taste of this beer is what I look for in BA stouts but rarely get. Integration of barrel, multiple flavors, richness to those flavors. The taste matches the nose in flavor. All work well together.

Mouthfeel is great for having little carbonation. Very viscous and leaves the mouth coated. Lasting flavor on the finish.

I want more of this beer. One of the better BA stouts I've ever had.

Hel & Verdoemenis Wild Turkey barrel aged. Brewed 10 Oct 2010. Bottled 14/21 Feb 2011. 13% ABV. .33cl bottle served into a minigoblet at Olbutikken in Copenhagen, in early July 2011. Reviewed from detailed notes. Expectations were extremely high given the beer's reputation. Purchased at Olbutikken.

Served slightly warmer than refrigerator cold. I talked with the Olbutikken worker while reviewing, which is why this review is less detailed than most of my high-rating reviews. I had this shortly before reviewing Mikkeller Black Hole Red Wine edition (also at Olbutikken).

A: Pours no head at all - a common De Molen feature, and likely a result of the 13% ABV. Colour is a solid nontransparent black.

Sm: A mild strength aroma of caramel, toffee, and chocolate. Subtle and inviting.

T: Bourbon notes, spice, chocolate, toffee, and very light cream. No caramel or alcohol comes through. Complex and incredibly well built, with a well layered dark malt foundation. The spices are divine, but masterfully subtle. The flavour profile as a whole features incredible subtlety. Very well balanced.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Complements the flavours. Unfortunately, it's a bit undercarbonated though. Good thickness.

Dr: Very drinkable. An amazing beer, and probably the best I've had from De Molen. It lives up to the hype. I'd have it again anytime. Hides its ABV incredibly well. Subtle and wonderful. Complex and amazing. Very fairly priced in Denmark.

Black and flat, this has reddish-brown highlights. The nose is better than the Misto, IMO. Fruitier with more coffee, a nice dark fruit and chocolate character to go with the boozier, less complex barrel character. Despite the reduced complexity, this works better IMO. The palate opens boozier, hotter and with brown sugar, vanilla and plenty of chocolate.Moderately roasty with some burnt malt bitterness present, this finishes a little sweet and boozy with plenty of chocolate liqueur. Excellent stuff

With the assistance of Wild Turkey bourbon to the ultra roasty Hel & Verdoemenis stout, there's a barrel-aged silkiness that emerges that softens the ashy edge of the beer while complementing with caramel and vanilla sweetness.

Pouring from an oddly clear bottle dipped judiciously with red wax, the 11oz bottle decants with a inky black color, rich viscosity, and low lying carbonation. Like espresso, only a delicate creme aligns the edge of the glass with intermittent pockets muddled about. Instead of lacing, the beer extends its appearance with brandyish legging and oils.

Rich aromas of strong roasted coffee, cocoa, scorched caramel, butterscotch, charred woods, roasted walnuts, cherry flavored alcohols, soft vanilla and almond all share the stage with the scents of bourbon and espresso leading the way. A great sense of depth and complexity is promised even before the first sip is taken.

The dominance of roasted grain and bourbon booze also dominate the taste while the complementing flavors of burnt caramel, campfire smoke, spicy tannin, cherry wood, thin maple, nuttiness, peppery phenols, and charred fruits offer a ton of interest and complexity- releasing new flavors at each visit to the glass. Still, the strong taste of ash that's noted in the original Hel & Verdominis is alive and well in this beer although the succulence of Wild Turkey bourbon rounds off the rougher edges of the dry roast taste.

The robust texture that's pulled together by the mildly unresolved sweetness is aided by the lack of carbonation that allows the sweetness to cling richly to the tongue and coax the palate with thin bourbon sweetness and boozy heat. Semi-dry to finish, the beer's light powdery texture of ash and grain derived astringency delivers one last pang of sharpness to complement the bourbon dryness.

Although I prefer this Wild Turkey barrel aged version of Hel & Verdominis much better than the original, it still has work to do as the phenols, tannins, and ash give the beer a drier roast and chalky taste and texture that's hard to dismiss.

Were the normal version had a huge head yesterday this does not. A thin film of tan head that fizzes away quickly. Very different from the huge frothy head yesterday that stayed on forever.
Still a dark beer with some reddishes at the bottom of the glass.

You can still smell the base beer, a pretty roasty and charred stout but added to that is an unmistakenly boozy nose. Whiskey for sure. Some coffee still there as well. Vanilla from the casks. Interesting!

Taste then...
Interesting, I think the base beer is subdued a little by the barrels. As expected. It appears less fruity than the original with more of an oaky, vanilla, bourbon flavour to it. The barrels do not overpower the beer however. The fruitiness (or more like malty sweetness) that it has is still there with a oaky/vanilla-ish flavour from the Wild Turkey. Very very complex, especially for me a non-bourbon/whisk(e)y drinker.

Not alcohol from the actual beer.

Very smooth, probably even more than the original. Could be the additional 1% ABV this bottling has. Even less carbonation too. A nice full and oily body.

A very enjoyable beer. It is much better than the original? I don't dare to say but it is different for sure. Well recommended. The 666 version I had long ago is maybe even better.

I am drinking bottle 804 of 1560 bottles, which was bottled around 14/21 February, 2011. ABV is 13%.

Body is very dark brown. Aggressive pour into a brandy snifter produces only a slight tan head, that quickly dissipates into a fine ring, with swirls of light suds on the surface.

Smells of dark roasted malt, whiskey alcohol, vanilla, dark fruit, prunes, and oak. A lot going on with this.

Tastes of dark roasted malt, a little powdery char, luscious dark fruit, sour but also sweet, and pretty boozy from the whiskey. Has a nice hoppy bitter finish, but not as bitter as I'd expect for a 99.9 EBU beer.

Body is medium, and there is a bit of a sticky sweetness, and just a small amount of carbonation. Overall, tastes pretty smooth.

This is a great RIS, very flavorful and very potent, in taste and in alcohol. This beer makes a perfect desert beer or night-capper.

18cl bottle #1520, shared with drowland. Pours jet black without a head. Slight bourbon aroma, sweet vanilla. Taste is roasty coffee, the bourbon comes out and burns slightly going down, even then, hides the 13% wonderfully. Very ashy. Sweet and delicious. I’m quite sure that this lives up to the top 50 hype, very, very good. A great example of the beer showing the characteristics of the Bourbon.

Busted this out at our weekly tasting with funkydelic and thagr81us, big ole WOOT WOOT to Greg for hookin this thing up!! Bottle was from first batch (96 bottles)you can literally smell the rarity on the bottle..
A) Pours a small head of mocha foam with very tight carbonation, Very nice lacing and a beautiful pitch black stout lurks below!
S) Smells of brownies, dark fruit, anise,coffee, very mild on the barrel and a little booze to tickle the nose hair!
T) POW!! One of the most complex Belgian stouts I've ever encountered. The Wild Turkey barrel brings a very wood forward , vanilla-caramel almost coconut lusciousness. Nice earthy notes, hints of roasted coffee, chocolate,sweet maltyish thingie that all blends awesome with the barrel that is much more present than in the nose.
M) Medium-full body with a soft persistent carbonation. The body seems to have been thinned by the barrel a bit but not at all in a bad way, it still has plenty of sweet malty sugar and flavor for days!
O) Overall this brew was worthy of all the hype! I wish the bottles were larger but oh well the small serving size made sure we all really tasted the rarity!!! I could see it holding up for many many years in the cellar, it's got PLENTY of backbone!!

2/7/13 bottle.

Look: Pours with thick, large, mocha head. Slow to medium retention speed, stickier big bubbles break down - they mostly form lacing. Leaves a thick but solid layer, good amount of lacing through. Dark, dark brown, no living light can penetrate it.

Smell: Cacao, fat, full, stuffy as fuck. Milk chocolate with very well represented bourbon oak are the dominant notes. Salty, mineral, burned soy sauce, but good incorporation into roasted, chocolate heavy malt. Light alcohol to detect.

Taste: Salty, medium intense molasses start. Also very light acidity that does it good. It continues into mostly milk chocolate with some roast and burned caramel medium-heavy sweetness. But this gets quickly dominated with medium to heavy honey bourbon oak with a noticeable alcohol spike and ends with medium to heavy coffee, cappuccino bitterness. Late in the after some coconut notes star to flow around. The taste is a lot less stuffy than the nose.

Mouthfeel: Full, medium heavy body, solid, creamy with some alcohol warming.

Overall: As it's none barreled base, it’s quite a beer. A fat one, full of darker malt wonders, but this time with a very strong bourbon presence, maybe a bit too much for my taste. It's a demanding beer, but well worth your time.

Had this in the bottle at Beervana 2013 and I was completely blown away. Still, but a solid 4.5 nonetheless. Had the chance to revisit this beer on 5/14/2014 at Norey's - not the same beer.

6oz. pour served in a sampler. Color was consistent with cola in hue and clarity. Head was 1/8th of an inch and khaki-colored. Nose is typical of a Russian Imperial Stout, but really no evidence of the barrel here - roast, char, dark malts and a hint of cocoa. Taste consistent with nose with just a trace of ethanol. The version out of the bottle was quite vibrant. The draft version gave no impression of barrel-aging whatsoever. Mouthfeel was light-medium in body with an even carbonation level, but a bit too assertive for my sensibilities. Overall - much better in the bottle and I question whether this may actually have been the standard Hel & Verdoemensis. I hope this was the case because this was fairly disappointing.

This brew is ranked really highly on the other site, but for some reason, the 96 bottle first batch didn't get onto the site here. Really glad De Molen decided to brew this one again, and to bottle a reasonable amount of it as well. Got this bottle from the De Molen shop in Bodegraven.

From a 18cl bottle into a snifter.

APPEARANCE: A black pour produces a very small, faint, tan head that vanishes almost immediately. Head barely makes an appearance and is gone. A stringy wisp and ring remain. Jet black body with zero carbonation evident. Ring remains but leaves no lacing down the glass. Thick looking stout, but average at best.

SMELL: A big nose for sure. Travels through the room. Roasted malts, dark bakers chocolate and some faint espresso notes. Barrel is definitely there. Bourbon notes with a good dose of vanilla and some brown sugar. A touch of booze in there as well. Lots of barrel without dominating. Very enticing.

TASTE: Lots of flavor. Roasted and charred malts with a good dose of pure, dark baker's chocolate and sweet caramel. Lots of barrel again, with some bourbon, oak, and a shot of vanilla. A big, bold and lingering aftertaste of barrel, roasted malts, and a touch of alcohol. Bourbon, vanilla, sweet brown sugar and roasted malts linger and linger. Barrel is definitely the front runner, though it doesn't overwhelm the base beer. Very well done.

PALATE: Thick, full body with very low levels of carbonation. Luckily this one is carbonated, as De Molen has had troubles in this department with their higher ABV stuff. Heavy and syrupy on the palate, though not overly creamy as a result. Goes down smooth with a bit of a burn after the swallow and finishes relatively mouth coating. Palate fits the beer very well.

OVERALL: It's obvious why this brew ranks so highly. Definitely one of De Molen's more barrel forward BA stouts, but done extremely well, without dominating the base beer. Still somewhat boozy for top marks, but given a little bit of time, and this will turn into a gem. A bold, flavorful, and superbly crafted barrel aged imperial stout. Worth tracking down for sure.

EDIT: With a huge thanks to Dennoman, Doopie and I were able to try a complete H&V Wild Turkey vertical, including the first batch 96 bottle nip that was brewed in July 2009 and bottled in August 2010. This one was the clear favorite, edging out the 2nd batch and wiping the floor with the 3rd and most recent vintage. The first batch shared many of the same qualities with the 2nd, but was less boozy, more chocolate forward, and had some pronounced toffee and butterscotch flavors as well. Absolutely decadent, and a clear 5 for taste and aroma. Cheers again for this opportunity Dennis. Never dreamed I'd see this.
