From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled 28 January 2013
32 Plato
IBU 57

APPEARANCE: A thick and viscous pour produces a small, looser, fizzy, off-white head that vanishes immediately. Darker color, coming out maroon red with no carbonation evident. No wisp or ring remain, making it look rather flat and unimpressive pretty quickly.

SMELL: Grapes, red wine, red fruits, berries and even sangria maybe. This is pretty much all wine barrel, though the aroma overall is a little muted, unfortunately.

TASTE: This is actually quite nice, and much more forthcoming than the nose had indicated. Very sweet again, like the base, but with better balance between the base beer and barrel aging. Red wine up front with toffee and grainy sweetness through the middle into the swallow. Sweet red fruits, berries, red wine again from the barrels, a touch of sweet oak, and some spicy alcohol. A touch of bitterness as attempted balance. This is a nice combo of Bordeaux barrels and B&G.

PALATE: Fuller body with medium levels of carbonation. Heavy and oily for sure, but still very creamy smooth on the palate as well. Good weight here, goes down smooth and finishes slick and sticky. A bit of a burn at the swallow with lingering heat on the palate. Creamier and more dominating than the base version.

OVERALL: Besides the lack-luster-at-best look, this was pretty delicious. It is so big and heavy that it becomes a test of the will half way through, so it's best to drink this one in small doses. It's times like this I wish De Molen still used those 18cl nips. In any case, this is one you won't soon forget, for whatever reason, so give it a shot if you get the chance. Recommended.

Bottle from hoppypocket for CanBIF Fall 2013. Bottled January 28 of 2013. Good to have De Molen back in my life

A - Pours with good carbonation and a two finger beige head. Colour is a cloudy amber-ish. Good lace rings and a film of retention.

S - Tons of lovely dark fruits. Lovely inviting complexity. Very faint vinous character. Smells like a big, boozy, barleywine.

T - A bit more vinous in the flavour. Lot's more dark fruit, sharp bit of alcohol. Sweet, spicy alcohol. Complex. Different from the base which I had a few years ago on tap. It definitely has a boozy, malty thing going on, but also has the wine barrel thing going on too. The barrel doesn't overpower though, and is pleasantly complementary.

M - Mild to medium carbonation, full and thick body with a sweet and dry finish with a bit of booze.

O/D - This was a great barleywine. It's nothing that's gonna knock your socks off, but it when you sit back and think about what you're dirnking, it dawns on you that it was better than you thought. Enjoyed it.

330ml bottle 15,2% Abv.
Served chilled in a snifter.
Bottled 28th Jan 2013
Good for 25 years.

Appearance: The beer pours a lovely (almost clear) deep red with a golden-amber appearing along the edges of the glass when back lit. A rough pour yields a good sized cream coloured head that lasts well for such a strong beer and even leaves a few thin patches of lacing. Swirling the beer coats the glass in a thick sticky residue.

Smell: Wow, the barrel aging has had a huge effect on the initial nose - as soon as the cap is cracked a fantastic jammy character (strawberry) just bursts out of the bottle. As the nose begins to open up notes of brown sugar, caramel, treacle, sweet red wine, some fruity alcohol, a touch of Belgian yeast (I have noticed this in the recent standard B&G bottles as well), oak, golden raisins, a little alcohol and a touch of citrus peel.

Taste: The initial flavour is absolutely fantastic with a ton of super sweet brown sugar, caramel, treacle and strawberry jam, however towards the middle of the mouth some rather out of place Belgian yeast and bitter alcohol flavours become apparent. Other notes include: Raisins, oak, sweet red wine, a hint of citrus peel and a pinch of spice. There is a little bitterness in the finish, but it does little to balance the massive sweetness.

Mouthfeel: There is far more carbonation than I expected (medium-high level), but thankfully it settles down pretty quickly and is nice and smooth. The body is superb - full, chewy and sticky.

Overall: The time spent in wine barrels has really altered the flavour of Bommen & Granaten adding a huge strawberry jam character. That said, I would like to see less carbonation and the spicy alcohol and yeasty notes missing as they were in the earlier vintages of B&G.
