A similar atmosphere that you would find at any Whole Foods store, though perhaps even more full of hipsters and hippies. The store is physically quite small with real narrow aisles which makes navigating the store similar to getting through the Holland Tunnel on your way into work in NYC (lots of delays). The beer and wine section is in the back righthand corner and is mostly just cooler areas but there are a few spots in the beer/wine section that have beer at room temperature on shelves. Additionally, you will need to pay attention to the endcaps in the store as I saw some beers that were not in the beer section on those (mostly bomber format).

The beers were the proper seasonals and all appeared to be fresh (for those with date codes on them). The majority of the beers were being sold at refrigeration temperature from the coolers and the section did not have any windows though the fluorescent lighting was quite bright (one of the brightest sections of the store).

I personally did not interact with any employees in the beer section but I do not have the expectation in a grocery store of getting good pointers for beer. Since I have been to the Asheville area numerous times, I was familiar with the products on the shelves.

The selection is pretty decent but not overly extensive with a heavy focus on local Asheville breweries (it pales in comparison with Bruisin' Ales and Appalachian Vintners). Fairly decent selection of local singles but again nothing that is not easy to find.

I did not try the food on this visit but like other Whole Foods, it has a fairly extensive hot food bar and cold food bar.

Prices were fair and in line with other shops in the area for beer.

Sunday Afternoon, on our way to Wedge. Swing in for a quick one.

Atmosphere: Asheville's hippest place to shop - a hipster paradise in a hipster town. Seriously, Greenlife is a high end grocer, especially busy on a Sunday.

Quality/Service: Clean store, if not a little harried. I didn't seek out any assistance and didn't receive any.

Selection: Average selection - heavy on locals (all NC I consider to be local). Most everything is in a few open coolers near the back of the store. I didn't come across anything new or exciting and would recommend checking out a few of the better stores in town first.

Stopped by here on my way back to Oklahoma, pretty access from my route.

The beer section was laid out in an organized & coherent manner

The quality on all beer purchased was good

The beer beer guy was very chatty & I saw him go half across the store to show a beer to a customer they were asking about ( they were in bombers not six packs ). The cashier was fairly friendly too

Selection of NC brews was pretty darn good with a respectable regional & import selection as well A fair selection of to go growlers as well. I walked out of there with stuff from French Broad, Highland, Pisgah, Brooklyn, Stone & Epic

Prices on all beers were pretty reasonable

This is a great plan B if Bruisin Ales isn't open

Stopped in here while killing time before Bruisin' Ales opened up on my recent trip to Asheville. From the direction I came into the parking lot, you really had to know where this place was to find it. I was on-foot so I had more options than when travelling in a car. Upon walking in it was laid out like a massively crowded Whole Foods that we have back home. The beer is in the back right by the way... I walked all around the periphery of the store until I found it. Upon reaching the section I noticed that they had a pretty decent selection for a store that mainly focuses on food. I had one employee ask me if I needed any help, but just told them I was browsing at the time. All of the prices were fairly reasonable for the area and there were quite a few different brews with a direct focus on locals. Worth swinging in here if you are looking for some locals and a few other oddities, but that is about it really.

Day one of my Asheville vacation...

I walked here with my wife in the afternoon while we had some time to ourselves. Immediately it seemed like a pretty cool place; obviously you could get food from inside and eat it at the tables outside, it was a pretty wide open space in spite of all the people milling around, and they had really good, quality deli foods, specialty items, coffees and teas, etc. Based on what I'd read in reviews beforehand, I did expect more selection. It turns out they're currently in the process of selling to Whole Foods, and i don't know if that had anything to do with it, but the selection was pretty good, not the amazing selection I had read of. There were two sections for beer, more than a typical grocery, and I saw a lot of stuff I can't get in Toledo; not just individual beers, breweries we can't get anything from there. I did look everywhere and seemingly obvious brewers like Stone and Rogue weren't there. There prices on beer were middle of the road, so to speak, and I found it cool that they sell growlers from local breweries ($9.99). It wasn't what it seems to have been, though, and it wasn't nearly as much as I could find at my top places in and near Toledo (any of The Andersons and Marino's, specifically). It does seem the entire beer selection was quality and there wasn't a macro light to be found. Service is tough to grade because it depends on so many factors, and some people were very friendly while others ignored us. The checkouts didn't seem to be fast but we used a checkout near the deli and we blazed through. The beer guy was very knowledgeable and helpful, though, so that pushes it up. Overall this was a very cool place. We got great food from the deli at a good price and ate it in a cool dining area up a ramp and we got great food to eat at home too. As a beer place specifically, though, while I'm glad I could get, say, a sixer of Gubna, there's a lot I can't get; and, along with that, there are very few singles and no make your own sixer option. It was pretty much only six-packs and 750s. As a beer place, then, it's not quite as good as it is as a grocery overall. It is still pretty good.

We went on a busy Saturday afternoon so the parking lot was packed as was the store itself. When I made my way to the beer case, I was impressed with the selection and the pricing. I was especially excited to find a six pack of Bell's Hopslam on top of the cooler. I added it to my basket and began scanning the rest of the selection.

After a few minutes, an employee approached me and asked where I had found the Hopslam. I told him that I had found it on top of the cooler at which point he said that it was being saved for someone else. He then asked for it back and unfortunatly, I complied(in hindsight, I should have asked to speak to a manager or refused.) The employee put the beer back on top of the cooler, but out of sight this time.

Needless to say, I put everything in my cart back and walked out without purchasing anything.

I guess I can understand saving beer for someone, but put it in the back or at least somewhere that's not with the rest of the beer that's on sale.

Also, if a customer does happen upon saved beer and adds it to their cart, I find it inappropriate for an employee to approach the customer and ask for the product back. At that point, you have failed in your duty to save the beer and should allow that person to purchase what they found on the shelf.

This is a fine store as long you don't unknowingly break their unwriten, organic hippie rules.

It's hard for me to make a complete asessment of this place because I've only ever stopped there for the beer and not the food, though it looks like it'd be a great place to get some tasty foodstuffs. That said, they have a great selection of both cold & room temperature beer, as well as growlers of several local breweries. Last time I was there I scooped up a growler of Pisgah IPA, which was both delicious & well priced. Service has been good as well. The same dude has been there every time I've been in, and he's been very friendly and willing to help out. Definitely worth stopping in if you are in the area.

We made a quick stop in this grocery on a recent trip to Asheville to check things out. First of all the store itself is pretty cool and is similar to say a Whole Foods but taken to Greenie nth degree, with all kinds of fresh/organic/vegetarian choices. I was told to stop here first before Bruisin' Ales because of the lower prices on the local stuff and for the most part, I found that to be true. Found plenty of both local favorites Pisgah and French Broad, both in bottles and growlers.

I was also happy to see a solid selection of other American craft beers as well, including a pretty nice Founder's selection, as well as bottles of the brand new '09 Stone RIS. Pretty impressive considering this was at a grocery store and not some high end bottle shop. A couple of guys were actually stocking the beer area as we perused and asked if we needed any help with anything, which was appreciated.

All said, this was a worthwhile stop, not only for picking up some local Asheville brews but also to pick up some food needs as well. We're definitely going to make this a stop each time we are in town.

Stopped here after lunch at Asheville Pizza & Brewing. very nice store, beer is to the right in the back. Plenty of Pisgah and French Broad growlers, some Pisgah bottles and FB bottles too.
Wanted a bomber of Wee-heavier but it was the one they were out of. Also had the Chapel Hill Ram's Head IPA which I can NOT get in the Triad!
The guy in the beer section was very knowledgeable of many of the beers and even recommended the Wolaver's pumpkin brew which we purchased. I also got a seasonal Highland I had not seen, the Cream Ale. Very nice store and the girl at the check out asked us about some of the beers as well. Some brews were nicely priced and some seemed a little high. Great selection and great service.

I hit up Greenlife as my first stop in Asheville. I had noticed in a couple of reviews that some BAs said to go here for prices and then to Bruisin' Ales for selection...so that's what I did. First off, not to stereotype, but if you're a hippie or totally eco-friendly this place is for you. I got a couple of evil eyes when I got out of my big gas guzzling SUV. Any way, heading into the store you are greeted by some rather delicious looking prepared foods. Head around to the right of that and go straight back to the far right corner of the store. There you will find the beer selection. Wow, this is a grocery store? Or at least it's something close to that. Many standards and lots of locals including Pisgah and French Broad growlers. I picked up some of them and some Pisgah 750's. The guy working in the beer dept. seemed to have a fairly good knowledge of the beer he had, which is always welcomed. This will be a stop for me on return visits to Asheville for sure.

Between here and Brusin', you can find just about everything that can be had in western NC. The beer guy here can be very helpful, so don't be afraid to ask. Most Pisgah bottles available. All Highlands are here. Some growlers, but that's been hit-and-miss. Hit this place after Asheville Pizza and Brewing and heading into town. I can bring the family here and they are happy milling about the store while I hit the beer corner in the back. Good food, too. Look around the beer section as well. There's a Pisgah rack a little back towards the main part of the store that's easy to miss.

Generally my first stop in Asheville. If you know what you want, and can skip the service of other places you can save a few bucks by going here. They have some local bottled offerings, and about the same amount of growlers as other stores. I have found local special releases here at a significant discount. If you look around a bit you can find beer stuck in different places throughout the store. The only drawback is it is a grocery store, and does get busy. I'd say avoid it around lunch/dinner time at all costs.

My wife and I statyed at a Bed and Breakfast about two blocks from Greenlife. We were in Asheville for three days and I think we went there at least twice a day. They had a pretty good beer selection. Most all of the local beers and many other NC brews. I didn't see any Foothills even though we had it on tap in town. The prices were a buck a bomber or 6-pack better than Bruisin Ales. There seemed to be different beers every time I went back. I bought more beer here than I did at Bruisin Ales to take back to Atlanta.

service: Nobody asked if I need help while I was standing there, not that I needed it. Hard to give this a number as always for a grocery.

selection: Good selection...nothing amazing, but certainly respectable. They carry Highland and some Pisgah and French Broad growlers, as well as many others that you will find at just about any well regarded beer store. Sierra Nevada Harvest was also available. I'm kinda spoiled.

pricing seemed reasonable...growlers were $10 and bombers of Highland Imperial Kashmir were a dollar less than Bruisin' Ales

Not the best selection in Asheville (that would be Bruisin Ales), but a good selection nevertheless, including sixers, twelves, bombers, and local growlers. Some of the really limited local stuff might not come through here, same with the ocassional hard to find out of state brew, but other than that they have an excellent selection of American craft brews. Their Belgian and other import sections aren't as impressive, but there are a few nice choices there as well. Definitely the best pricing in Asheville. Service is okay- its a grocery store (although a nice one). I usually stop heere first and then to Bruisin Ales.

Probably the best place you can go price-wise in Aville. They have a solid selection and represent the local breweries well. There were growlers from Pisgah and French Broad for good deals. A huge selection of almost all craft brews and nice imports. Some good mixed 12-packs from Great Divide, Highland, and I'm pretty sure I saw a Victory mixed pack also. There are also some singles toward the front of the store, though it's fairly limited. They don't mess around here, especially for a grocery store.

I stopped in Greenlife during a recent trip to Asheville hoping to find some different stuff in their singles cooler.

First of all, we don't have any cool local groceries like this near my home, and it's a darn shame. I wish I had access to such a great local food store.

Anyway, I went straight to the back right corner to the beer section. Impressive selection of sixers and about 20 growlers of Highland and French Broad - very cool. They also had a decent little section of beer glasses.

In the front they had a small section of singles with about 25 to choose from. They didn't have anything I was looking for, but I appreciated the thought.

They also had some older beers on sale, which is a good sign that they are monitoring freshness to some extent and trying to move them, which is a concept that many liquor stores don't seem to get.

Nice grocery store, nice compliment to Bruisin' Ales, which is right down the street.

I drove up to Greenlife from South Carolina and I was not disappointed at all. The store is just a little north of I-240 and has its own parking lot. The beer is the very back right corner of the store. They have a good selection that includes Rogue, Samuel Smith, Highland, as well as a good variety of Belgians. There were two staff members stocking beer while I was there and they both asked me what I was looking for and gave me decent recommendations. Prices were average, usually about $8.99 or so for a six pack from American craft breweries. The only thing I found annoying was the very cramped space near the beer cooler. Other than that though, they have a lot of beer to choose from as well as a whole store full of organic food. Highly recommended.

Fantastic selecton of local brews, pretty much every craft you can get locally, great selction of Belgians, good singles cooler, and Tons of local growlers. Not to mention pretty much every Great Divide, Rogue, DFH that can be bought in NC! Staff is always willing to help, and will order anything they can get that they don't have. The store is a bit cramped which takes a little getting used to, but you will find everything you need right in the back left,Truly a great place to visit. I find an excuse to stop here everytime I'm in Asheville. A great place really. After navigating the infuriatingly awful parking lot oval which is always packed (damn hippies and their dreadful designs) head toward the back right corner for the brews and booze. Moderately large wine and beer section tucked away behind serve yourself honey, nuts and other amenities.

The selection is actually better than most grocery stores you'll come across. They have DFH, Victory, most NC brews including growlers from Pisgah and French Broad. They also have a reasonable choice of Belgians but nothing to blow your socks off in that category. They have a small area toward the front of the store in the top left of a cooler that has American singles which I believe are beers leftover that they couldn't sell as a sixer or something... not really sure.

The service is generally friendly although it can occasionally be difficult to round someone up in the beer and wine section but if you find someone else working there they can generally get someone to the back to help.

Best beer store in Asheville hands down.

Lots of cheeses and such. But we're here for the brews. In the back right corner is the coolers. There is a large selection of singles as well as many sixers. The prices are very reasonable. I picked up a few bombers of Otter Creek IPA for only $3.39 each. The Rogue ceramic bottles were $12 and some change. And don't forget to look on top of the coolers. There was quite a bit up there too. This place has just become a stop on my Asheville tour. One of the better selections in town. All beers were stored cold except for a few bombers. Stopped in here on a recent visit to Asheville. First time shopping in the state after the cap had popped so there were a few things I was looking for that I couldn't get in Ga.

Typical organic grocery store type of place with tons of people shopping inside who fit the bill to be there. Beer was in the far back right in an open faced cooler with beer stacked on top. They were really well stocked and definately had some good stuff I couldn't get at home including Victory, Weyerbacher, Dogfish Head, Duck-Rabbit and some other NC brews. They didn't just have the typical offerings from these breweries but had some one off releases as well. Not as huge of a selection as most good beer stores but very good for a grocery store.

Service was hard to comment on, I pretty much took care of myself.

I'll definately stop back in on my next visit to the area. Its not that bad of a trip from Atlanta either.

Greenlife is a piece-o-cake to find just North of I-240 on Merrimon. The problem can be parking as this is a very popular store.

The beers are in the far right corner and somebeers are placed in the middle of the store near the produce and some others on aisle end caps. Most of the beers are cold, but some are sitting on the floor or stacked on top of the cooler or even at the end of the wine shelves. Be sure to look around, otherwise you may miss something good.

The selection is pretty darn good, while they do not have everything available, they are pretty darn close to having everything. The prices on some things are the best in the state. They do not seem to be following the trend in the "Organic" store sales of charging a premium on the beer aisle.

The beer guy (sorry I don't know his name or title) was present during my visit and knew what he was talking about. A breath of fresh air. He directed folks to good selections and things they were looking for with ease. We talked about some of the beers and a few he had not tried, but he did at least have a knowledge about his stock. The thing that keeps the service a bit low is getting through the checkout. A bit on the slow side for my tastes.

I'll certainly hit Greenlife my next time through town!

Singles selection is not that great though. I was happy I came away with Big Hoppy Monster since I was looking for it in Asheville. The prices on average seem a little cheaper than other places. As many folks know, the beer market in North Carolina is constantly changing since the cap was lifted from 6% to 15%. While things are still changing, Greenlife seems to be doing the best job in Asheville of keeping up with the many new beers that are coming in and making as much room for them as possible. They have two dedicated guys that work in the beer section and both of them are knowledgeable and have a passion for beer. I only wish they could increase their cooler size to accomadate the entire influx of new beers.

As far as selection, they are the best in town right now. Ommegang, Orval, Duvel, Chimay, St Bernadus, Achel, Allagash, Westmalle and several other belgians are represented. They also have the Rogue XS line, Victory HopDevil and Golden Monkey, Great Divide bombers, and Dogfish Head 90 minute and Midas Touch.

They are a work in progress, but as I stated earlier, they are well ahead of the pack when it comes to beer selection in Asheville.

Edit to add that I just came back from there. They have added Great Divide Titan IPA, Celebrator Dopplebock, Avery Beast (15%), and a few others

Its very similar to Fresh Market / Earth Fare type of places, but as everyone's noted there was a "beer guy" to help people out. He was, indeed, friendly although he wasn't quite on the mark on his advice about the Rogue Half-e-weizen (I asked "why is it Half", he said its just Rogue's hefeweizen, but Rogue's web site says its got some extra spices like ginger and coriander added so it isn't really a hefeweizen in the German sense). But, this is no big deal, simply having someone back there was a nice gesture. Overall the selection was great, I'd say it was as good as the other supermarket-type places I've been in Asheville. I picked up Ayinger dunkel and a 4-pack of brauweisse, and the Half-e-weizen and a 6-pack of Rogue Amber. I"m afraid I can't recount all the selections they have, but I was pleased with the stop. Have a large cooled selection on NC micro brews plus the usual assortment of other beer available in NC not quite as large as Peabody's but very nice selection for health food/ grocery store. If in Asheville a stop here and a stop at the Asheville WIne Market also on hwy 25 (which is Merrimon/Biltmore Ave) about a mile away would have you covered for about 99% of the beer available in Asheville.
