Had this on 2011-04-04 in Columbia, PA. Note, this is a gluten-free beer.

A - Clear straw and amber with a 1-finger, white head with moderate lacing.

S - Tart apples, bread, spice and funky straw.

T - Tastes like tart and light molasses but also spicey and earthy. I like the taste. There's also some resiual bitterness from the sorghum and I assume from some added hops. I assume the ABV is fairly low as I don't taste the alcohol.

M - Light-medium body and medium carbonation yield a smooth yet pallet-cleansing feel.

O - Didn't know what to expect from a sorghum-based beer and I find I like the flavor. The brew seems well made and balanced.

Had no idea what to expect. I was looking for a gluten-free beer for my retail shop. So far, any gluten free product I've sampled (all in the world of breads) rates somewhere between poor and awful, so I was quite surprised by this beer. It's certainly nothing to write home about, but it's decent. Slightly better than some of the popular comercial beers... Budweiser springs to mind.

Has the appearance of sparkling apple juice, including the lack of head. The flavor is fairly flat, but certainly not offensive. There is a vegetal quality to it, but this is not unpleasant, just unusual. This beer certainly doesn't leave me craving another, but then neither do most of the popular commercial beers. Could use a bit more hop.

355 mL bottle picked up at the LCBO as a single; listed at 4.7%. I don't have celiac disease, so I mostly review these beers out of curiosity and a lack of other things to tick - I've certainly never had a GF beer I wanted to drink more than once. Served well-chilled.

This one pours a deep golden-yellow colour, with one finger of fizzy, bone-white head that snaps and crackles as it fades away before my very eyes. A very thin collar and an island of film supported by the carbonation are the only visible remnants... this is a flat, dull-looking beverage reminiscent of apple juice. The aroma is fairly mild, consisting of some vegetal sweetness, apples, and floral hop notes.

I was expecting a bomb, but I am actually pleasantly surprised by this one. It has a grainy malt flavour, with some pear fruitiness and sour apple notes. That boiled vegetable flavour I find in these GF beers is still noticeable, but the floral hop bitterness in the finish helps mask it, and dries the palate out with each sip. Quite light-bodied, almost watery, with fairly mild carbonation. I'm not big on the mouthfeel, but otherwise this is drinkable enough.

Final Grade: 3.21, a C+. Bard's Original Sorghum Malt Beer is probably the most beer-like of the handful of GF brews I've so far imbibed - it's light, refreshing, and a little fruity, reminding me more of a blonde ale than anything. All other things (e.g. price) being equal, I'd take this over most cheap lagers, but in the real world there's no real reason for me to bother with this one again. If you're a beer drinker who needs to start avoiding gluten for one reason or another, this seems like a passable option and I'd probably recommend it in that case.

Purchased at the LCBO as a single to try. 355ml bottle served at 8deg C in a draught glass.

No statement here on Advocate so on the bottle... 4.7%

A- Pretty good. Opens well, pours golden clear like a Bud

S- Nothing there

T- Nice carbonation. Light tasting. Easy drinking. Mild all around

M- Average at best.

O- Nice easy drinking beer. This is one for a hot day working in the yard. If the price point was better I would buy again

Food Pairing

This nice light flavored beer pairs well with... Hamburgers

Enjoy

Nice golden copper color with a thin head with low retention.
Light sorghum malt aroma with hints of caramels and guaraná soda.
Flavor of sweet Sorghum malt with tangy fruity notes, hints of strawberries and caramels.
Light body with good carbonation.
Interesting flavor, good option for who is allergic to gluten, even though tastes more like English ales. It could be hoppier to better counterbalance its sweetness.

This beer is not a bad tasting beer but there is not much significant about it either. I give 3/5 for carbonation and does not hold a head too well. As far Gluten free beers go this is a decent alternative to beers that taste like vegetables or ridiculously strong or spicy beers. Overall I give it 3/5 A good alternative to New Grist.

Appearance: Clear medium-golden body, with a moderate, fairly dense white crown, which retains fairly well. The lacing is thick and patchy, and there is profuse, fine, slow-rising carbonation.

Aroma: Cereal notes dominate the aroma, along with modest herbal hops, and a light fruitiness.

Taste: The flavor is odd at the open, with a combination of cereals and light fruit, not really beer-like. It is somewhat reminiscent of unfermented wort. There is a slight sour note throughout. The taste draws to a close with a burst of herbal hops and a rather dry finish.

Mouth feel: A bit thin, with stinging carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: Its OK, not really beer-like, but not revolting. Just OK.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twelve-ounce brown glass longneck bottle, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

This one pours a very clear and light golden color with a thin white head and little to no lacing on the glass.

The nose is malty sweet with little notes of the hopping. There is a subtle spice to it as well. Kind of weak.

The flavor is OK and is effervescent and dry with subtle hopping as well.

Not a remarkable beer but still drinkable and easy going. could be a good alternative for something lite on hot days.

Poured into a fluted Guinness pint glass. No head, no lacing, pours to a golden yellow color. Not impressive--looks like a Budweiser without the head.

No scent discernible. Nothing much else to say.

Tastes sour up front. Bitter. Tastes like I'm chewing on wheat or barley grains.

Not very carbonated, which can be nice, but here tastes flat. No bite. Not much body or depth.

I'm not going to have this again. I would hesitate before trying--and would never pay for--another sorghum beer again.

I can keep this short because there's not much to review. It tastes abit like alcohol free beer and might as well be one. Rec'd in craft pack from WFM. Pass.

A-Clear amber, thin small, head, disappears quickly. no vis carbonation, flattish, a little foam returns with a swirl.

S-Very little aroma. Like a mass NA beer.

T- Mostly dry, but it needs more hop flavor. A bit of strange fruit, slightly ciderish.

M-Light, dry, but watery thin.

O-Nice try. Not for me. Unoffensive.

Clear golden beer under a short head that immediately gives way to a partial ring.

Faint across the board -- hardly anything by way of aroma or flavour in any kind of meaningful sense. Slightly doughy fruity finish. Very thin-bodied.

Th-th-th-that's all folks. Uninspired, but unoffensive, just a bottle of bland.
