22 oz bottle poured an opaque, black body.
Feel: full, creamy smpoth body; light carbonation.

FLAVOR: Average intensity for style. Ample dark roasted malts with minimal smokiness and moderate. Some light burnt toast in the aftertaste. Lightly bitter. Good balance.

They recently began bottling this again. I don't know if it is a limited thing they are doing or if they plan to offer it more often. I think this used to be called Total Eclipse, but this bottle simply says "Stout".

Appearance: Black as night, no light, decent amount of light khaki head which lingers through the consuming of this one.

Aroma: Dark roast malts, some chocolate notes, some have said bakers chocolate. Its just plain dark chocolate to me. Pretty much what you would expect from this type of stout.

Taste: Roasty and robust, but it is chocolate dominant and not too sweet but sweet enough. Its on the thin side but then again it is not an imperial stout. Finish is somewhat clean and not at all cloying. Pleasant for what it is.

Overall: This is a good stout, its nice to have some nicer options available from Foothills, but to be honest this is not much better if any than Green Mans Forester and it comes in six packs for $10-12, whereas this is $6-8 for a bomber depending on where you bought it. Which is the downside to Foothills, they need to make these offerings available in six packs rather than bombers and ONLY put the special stuff in the 650 ml bottles!

Poured on-tap at the brewery, the beer is a dark, brown to black coloring with a foamy, low profile, light tan head. Aromas of subtle roast, bittersweet chocolate, hints of molasses, bittersweet chocolate, and char. Flavors are roasted forward, with a bittersweet blend of roasted coffee, nutty sweetness, baker's chocolate, and hints of smoke. Dry, smooth bodied, with a roasted coffee and smoky aftertaste. Dry, smooth finish. Nice beer.

On tap at World of Beer in Raleigh on 8/30/12.

A - pitch black with a thick, brown head that had great retention

S - oddly there's no nose, I couldn't smell a thing

T - roasted malts, faint chocolate, some underlying citrus, bitter piny finish, some alcohol

M - medium to full bodied, well carbonated, warming alcohol

The flavor is good though a bit more bitter than I had expected. The appearance was almost perfect. The nose threw me for a loop. I've never had a beer this bold and flavorful that didn't offer a similar aroma. Overall, a decent experience.

Poured from a keg at Milltown (highly recommended) in Carrboro, NC, into a Foothills pint glass.

A: Jet black pour with a sticky-thick khaki lacing.

S: Dry roasted nose with subtle espresso and chocolate notes. Typical for this style but a tad underwhelming.

T: Follows the nose - bitter, dark chocolate, lots of roasted grains somewhat balanced by a tad of sweetness.

M: Typical although thin, nicely dry and bitter.

O: Classic American stout, a little thin for my taste. This is a good beer that sadly fell short of my expectations.

@ Brixx (Chapel Hill)

Pours black with a small, creamy off-white head on top. Lots of caramel and dark, toasty malt in the nose along with a bit of vinous fruit and some sweetness. Flavors of sweet, dark, roasty bitterness. Dark chocolate, espresso, and some fruity tartness. Smooth mouthfeel, a little better than medium bodied. This is a very good straight-up stout. Loads of roasted malty darkness, but not overwhelmingly heavy. I had a few and never felt the need to move onto something else.

A buddy of mine has had a few kegs of this on his home tap, so I've been able to sample it quite a few times, being pleased but not wowed each time. It pours with a an expected darkness topped by a creamy, sticky brown head. The aroma is a very understated dry roastiness that again is pleasant but not remarkable. The flavor is much more amplified, with a strong, earthy combination of hops and a coffee-like bitterness from the roasted grains, and only a little sweetness to balance. The fine, prickly carbonation is neither enticing nor unpleasant. Overall, this is certainly a nice, robustly-flavored stout that I would gladly have in my glass many more times.

Pours black with a nice dark tan head that's stays around for a while.

Nose is light molasses, black coffee, hints of black licorice and light roasted grain.

Mouthfeel is medium/light bodied for a stout. Pleasant, well balanced and dry.

Flavor profile is what I would call "typical American decent stout." Black coffee, light molasses, light licorice all very well integrated. Basic flavor profile of nice roasted grains.

Finish is a nice light bitter black coffee and is somewhat dry for a stout. A decent drink without being a "must have/must taste" stout.

Growler poured into a Duvel tulip. Nice and dark with a dense cap of tan head. Good retention with generously scattered lacing.

Nice roasty nose, a touch burnt, a touch chocolatey. The flavors lean more dry and burnt than the nose. Acrid burnt malt, dark roast and a fairly sharp bitterness. Very little sweetness. Somewhere in between a 'regular' American stout and an imperial. Nice dry finish. The lack of sweetness limits drinkability a bit, but it's definitely worth a try.

Beer is black, darker than the porter, tan head of small bubbles, lacing on the glass and mild carbonation.

Aroma is roasty, mildly sweet, a little like coffee.

Beer is medium in body and sweet at lead off and finishes with a nice roasty bitterness, no detectable hops. The midpalate has a mild chocolate flavor and overall it is a nice drinking beer. I'm not super impressed with it, it is a standard base stout.

A-Pours almost pitch black with tan head that leaves some lacing on the top of the glass. There are some nice cherry hues that come through on the edges.

S-Heavy on the roasted malts and a hint of hops.

T-Roasted malts dominate, with some coffee, toffee, and a hint of hops.

M-Thick and creamy.

D-Very drinkable due to its good flavor and mouthfeel.

Overall, I am not convinced this is an Imperial Stout. It lacks the mouthfeel and complexity of that style. Given its abv. it at best straddles the line between American Stout and Imperial Stout. Its a good beer, worthy of trying nonetheless.

Pours a dark chocolate black/brown, with minimal head.

Bittersweet baking chocolate in the nose, not much else to report, although this aspect is assertive and a pleasure to sniff.

Flavor is burnt chocolate and bittersweet dark chocolate, mostly, although some dark bread comes through as well. Totally malty, surprise, surprise...

Feels incredibly smooth, a little too smooth for my liking, like an English-style oatmeal stout or something. A little carbonation would've propped this up nicely, and I'm hardly a carbonation freak.

I'd like to try this again, maybe right at the brewery, and see if maybe it lost a little something in transport up to the beerfest I tasted this at...or just had a tapping problem or some other such issue. But still, it's hardly poor.

Pours a dark, not quite black shade of brown. Big frothy tan head with nice retention. Initial smell is coffee. Roasted dark malts stand out with a little hoppyness resulting in a nice bready scent. Bitter coffee and a little dark chocolate flavors strike first. As it warms, you get a really intense bittersweet chocolate effect, some black licorice and the coffee takes a back seat. Finish is slightly sweet, slightly bitter and long. Really intense roasted chocolate malt. The mouthfeel is a little thin and fizzy and probably the weak point for this beer.

Good stout - especially in the flavor category where it counts.

On-tap at Barley's, Asheville, 17 Aug. 09

Appearance: It's black. Solidly, beautifully black. Not much of a head, though.

Aroma: Not much here. Smells like a good Murphy's, with peat.

Taste: Makes up for the nose, big-time! Campfire, peat, coffee, chocolate, pipe tobacco, toast, bagels, hops.

Palate: Strong but smooth. If it's gotta be this strong, it should be this smooth.

Overall: Drinkability is a tough one to score here. 12 oz is almost too much, especially after a couple of IPAs. It's a truly solid beer, though, an EXCELLENT local-brewed stout.

Highly recommended.

Poured from growler into snifter.

A :: Pours a thick dark black with a nice tan head that disappears into a thin coating and nice lace.
S :: Smells of sweet roast malts, coffee, bittersweet chocolate. The smell is rather mellow overall.
T :: Roasted malts up front with a delicious dark chocolate bitterness and burnt coffee/espresso. This starts off a little sweet but then develops into some bitterness and finishes dry with what I believe to be some hoppy bitterness.
M :: Medium body with a good level of carbonation. A creamy texture fills your mouth allowing the flavors to develop.
D :: A very nice drinkable offering. I will definitely enjoy this growler and wish I lived closer to the brewery. Very drinkable overall; not too thick and not too thin and quite tasty.

Came out a deep dark black with very thin tan sheet on top. Some spots and globs stuck to the glass edge. Smelled of roasted malts, chocolate, grape, raisin, and slight alcohol. Mouthfeel was crisp and slightly chewy. Flavor was of roasted cocoa beans, espresso, and dark breads. Finished almost like a wine. This was a decent brew. I would get this again. A very easy drinker even at the ABV level.

Sampled at Foothills Brewing Co in Winston-Salem, NC.

A - Deep black with no light coming through. A small beige head that yields some lacing.

S - Roasted malt.

T - Mostly roasted flavor from the malt with some bitterness from it as well. Quite dry. I thought it started well but went a bit flat (and a little sour) in the end. It just seemed to be missing something in the balance. The 7% alcohol is pretty well hidden.

M - A bit higher in carbonation than I expected. And maybe a bit thin as it seems to evaporate in your mouth.

D - Decent but not compelling.

Had on draft after the Sexual Chocolate pre-party. Dark brown/black pour with a white head. Just barely sticks to the side of the glass. Roasted mocha coffee and malt aroma, not terribly strong but ok. Tastes similarly, some more coffee dryness than typical. Not quite creamy, medium body. Pretty drinkable, enjoyable. More of a "foreign" stout, like Lion Stout or something. Try it if you get a chance.

10oz pour at Raleigh Times. Served a nice opaque black with a tan head that was slow to diminish and left spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma was abundant roasted malt with hints of cocoa and coffee. The taste is also a nice blend of these flavors, all shining through even better in this cask version. The beer is very smooth and medium bodied with the alcohol very well hidden. This beer is very enjoyable anyway, and it's even better on cask.

Had at Barley's in Asheville on 1/8/09.

Came black with a cm thick tan head which left good lacing. The smell also suits the style well. There's an immediate rush of dark malts, like a roasted coffee, not a lot of sweetness. A Dry smell. The taste is very complex, but still smooth. There's coffee, along with bitterness. The sweetness comes along later, and is welcomed. I don't know that it should be in the same league as a big american coffee stout or something, its more of a dry stout, but I enjoy it. I love roasted barley, love it. The mouthfeel is sort of thin if its really a double stout. Kind of watery, but not terrible. Drinks well. Not like a quick drinking beer, but I could drink quite a few throughout the night.
My only question is: Was this supposed to be something like an Imperial Dry Irish Stout?

Had this on-tap at Barley's Tap Room in Asheville.

Pours black that lightens up around the edges of the glass with a one-finger tan head. The head sticks around for a while before dissipating into a wispy layer of bubbles on top of an oily top and a medium-sized ring around the glass. Lacing is light but sticky.

Smells largely of roasted malt, with a light dark chocolate smell. The chocolate aroma becomes more pungent as the beer warms, but the roasted malt smell remains stronger.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Lots of roasted malt flavors up front followed by a hint of chocolate and ending with a good amount of bitterness.

Mouthfeel is good. Good thickness and good carbonation make this one go down smoothly.

Drinkability is good. I ordered this before I decided to order pizza, but I still had no problem putting this one down pretty quickly.

Overall this was my first foray into Foothills Brewing, and I was impressed. A very solid stout that's worth a try.

A pretty robust stout that posts big coffee flavors and light on the hops. Begins with a froathy dark brown pour, very good head formation / retention. Aromas of coffee and roasted malts gain attention first, with malt sweetness, nuttiness, and hints of cocoa later. Hop aroma is slight and swirls around the sharp espresso scent. Flavors again heavily favor the roasted qualities, rich maltiness, low-lying sweetness. The hops and cocoa flavors are quite subdue and offer mild complexities. The texture is rich and malty without heavy sweetness or unnecessary thickness. Alcohol warmth balances with hop dryness and bitterness late to make the beer quite drinkable. Finishes with a coffee-hop bitterness and espress aftertaste. A very good Stout that is lighter on the hops than the great ones like Sierra Nevada's or Avery's Out of Bounds.

Poured in a tumbler at the Flying Saucer.

Pours a syrupy oil in color beneath a creamy, tanned head. Condensed lacing remains intact throughout the glass. Rich milk chocolate and caramel with a generous whaft of toffee. Notes of vinous fruity esters with a subtle dryness. Rich, roasted malts: milk chocolate and toffee with just a hint of creamy sweetness. Balanced nicely with a mild floral hop bite among a slightly nutty dryness. Full in body; chewy and rich. A very flavorful stout from a brewery that seems to know how to craft and balance a bigger style ale.

Pitch black with a finger high head and good lacing.

Smell is big licorice, roast, and an almost sticky dark fruit.

The roast is overpowering in the flavor; it's almost everything you taste. The hops don't get a chance to shine as a burnt taste hits your end palate rather than a fitter feeling.

Full bodied, medium-high carbonation that could stand t be toned down a bit.

A good beer, but it seems like this one is trying to be as heavy and rich as an Imperial Stout without enough alcohol to dry things out.

Appearance- Very opaque dark brown almost black. Typical ton of lace for a stout with a lot of tan head.

Smell- It smells of coffee and a sweet roasted malt blend.

Taste- This stout has a very rich but sweet roasted flavor that bends well and is not overwhelming at all. The flavors are nicely balanced.

Mouthfeel- Very thick and creamy.

Drinkability- This beer is very filling but it great beer if you are only having a few.
