Notes/Commercial Description:
People's Porter is a robust English-style brew with a dark, ruby hue. Complex chocolate, caramel and toffee notes give way to an herbal bitterness, finishing with a pleasant hint of espresso.

A fluffy caramel head rests on top of an onix-colored body. I spilled a little onto my hands, and they now smell like Mexican hot chocolate. Cinnamon, chocolate malts, maple syrup, and a touch of coffee liquor are all present in the nose. The full taste is packed with bitter chocolate and coffee with a touch of vanilla and anise seed. Lacings grace the side of the glass like spider webs. I will grant that this is a solid porter.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark ruby color. The head is a fluffy, creamy two-finger mocha shade. It has a soft texture, nice retention, and leaves behind plenty of splotchy lacing on the glass.

S: There's a good deal going on in the nose. Milk chocolate seems to be the dominant note, while both cream and coffee do a good job of underlying it. I also seem to pick up something suggesting citrusy as well. Citrusy hops don't always work in a porter, but they do here. Everything seems to be well integrated.

T: I don't pick up much of the chocolate or cream I did on the nose. Rather, the most prevalent flavor is coffee - and lots of it. When done right in a porter/stout, piny hop bitterness can make the beer generally resemble espresso, and it does here. Post-swallow, there's less of a coffee flavor and more of a general hoppy note. Very vague suggestions of fruit esters seem to hang around here and there. Hoppy porters are never my favorite style, but this one seems to work quite well considering.

M: There isn't much heft on the palate; since this is more sweet than bitter, this lightness is welcome. It's also bone dry and strongly carbonated; naturally, this is very easy to drink.

O: A decent - if not amazing - robust porter, the hops here work better than some others in the style. Still, I wish some more of the malt character came through.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

A real nice looking porter. Creamy forming head three fingers deep with a very light tan color, thick lacing and large retention. Body color is super dark walnut brown with an edge of chestnut red just under the head. Great looking beer.

Real nice milky chocolate and warm coffee roast character. Real nice and solid, hints of sweetness and cocoa powder dryness also.

Palate comes a little bit different than expected. Large roast finish, but there's some sour acrid grain sensations right away. Light bodied but slightly wet, and a large bitter roast character that builds on the finish very large and growing after a swallow. Faint tin medicinal sensations a bit linger as well. Some slight soda character in feel with tight carbonation also.

Overall the nose hints at real solid greatness but doesn't deliver the sensations on the palate at all that the bouquet hints at. Some faint tin and sourness also takes it down a notch in enjoyment. It's ok, but I have had a lot better porters than this.
