Picked up a couple bottles while on vacation and had it on tap sitting on the pier for lunch. Review is based off this final bottle.

12 oz brown bottle with the Hoppyum label sitting beautifully on the front and a nice description on the back. I really enjoy this label with its green and oranges and dark reds sitting on a black outline. The hop cones are the logo for this label and it looks grand. Foothills Brewing logo sits to the side of the cones. Poured this into a standard American pint glass.

A - golden color with hints of golden copper like but definitely gold being the main color. A soap sudsy white head actually had some good mass to it. Head was thin looking and sudsy despite its size. It left a clumpy ring of sudsy lacing and surprisingly had good stickiness.

S - massive hop aroma. Pineapples, grapefruits, slight orange fruitiness with some pine resin. Caramel malt provided a slightly sweet character in the back drop. Very big hop aroma.

T - not quite as hoppy as the nose would suggest. The same notes come through but in a more laid back manner. Pineapple, orange, and grapefruit take hold of the fruitiness it has to offer with a resinous pine staking claim to the bitter notes. Caramel malt is a bit more pronounced than in the nose which gives the flavor more of a balanced sweet fruitiness rather than a hop showcase like the nose suggested. A nice flavor though.

M - medium bodied and crisp. This brew may have looked like golden soap water with a big sudsy head on the pour but it really has some nice flavors going on and the palate is very well balanced. Pretty good texture in the feel and has some coating to it.

O - the first time I poured this I didn't expect much. I figured a way too hop forward ipa from a small brewery that would have needed going in the sink. Boy was I shocked. The nose suggests it has those hop flavors we love while the flavors offer up a more relaxed and balanced experience. It's not something you'll be driving 500 miles for, but if you are in the North Carolina area often as I am you'll be missing out on a pretty darn good ipa if you don't grab Hoppyum. This was the brew that put Foothills on my watch list and frankly that doesn't happen often.

Appearance: Nice copper color, nice carbonation, nice two finger white head, nice lacing.

Smell: Nice fruity, hoppy, mango-like smell.

Taste: Fruity, I can't pinpoint the flavor.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, great carbonation.

This is a great beer. I'm completely screwed up on describing it, but it's awesome. It reminds me of Dig beer from New Belgium. It's very similar.

Had on-tap at Westville Pub Asheville. Served in a pint glass.

A- Pours a light amber color with a 1/4 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of sheer surface foam.

S- Mildly citrusy hop aroma and a faint whiff of booze.

T- Good hop flavor with some moderate bitterness. It doesn't point toward any one particular direction. Just some mild citrus and on into the bitterness which actually becomes more and more intense with each sip. Touch of bready malt brings a slight balance. Alcohol is decently concealed.

M- Slightly sharp with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- Nothing spectacular but it's better than the BA score gives it credit for. Just needs a bit more balance.

What I am about to say isn't a bash on this well balanced east coast (u.s) ipa. Nice amber finish in glass (draft). Hops taste great but a bit spicy so if you aren't used to eastcoast ipas you may not like this ipa. Honestly to me not much of a potent smell from the draft. All in all I would definitely order this beer again and foothills brewing should not be overlooked.
